I love prehistoric animals :D
I designed a stationary with this in my professional practice class (buisness cards, letterheads, etc)
Decided to make a final piece with it.
Process of reconstruction (for me):
Make sure the skull is as accurately drawn as possible.
Overlay tracing paper. Use muscle references to reconstruct.
Overlay another tracing paper. Now that the muscle is applied, overlay with flesh. Modern day felids can be used as a guide.
The background was made with crackle paste, and painted in acrylics.
I do not claim to be 100% accurate, this is my first serious attempt at a reconstruction by looking at bones and multiple references of muscles.
Added the white border around it because it'd be simpler to mat it for an artshow. I also tried to give it that poster-y feel :3
Smilodon Populator is the largest of the smilodon species.
Sketch in scraps.
Thanks for looking!

Bones and muscles are hard to draw. You did an excellent job. :3
Oh this is really wonderful. I bet this is really difficult to realise to draw a feasible and close to nature anatomy.
thanks :)
It is hard, but very interesting and fun to do at the same time.

Oh, there are others capable :D
Such as homotherium, or megantereon for example. But Smilodon has a great set of teeth.

This is a magnificent piece! If I weren't completely broke, I'd ask for a print.
So does the muscle structure help guide the shading on the final part?
yep! It "fills" it out. But you can poof it up a bit by adding fur too. Modern day cats are a good guide.
I would love to become a good enough artist to do things like this part time in the future :3
:) Yeahhh I'd actually like to be a paleo artist. Its so much fun to bring cool creatures to life.
very cool
that sucker must have had one heck of a bite judging by the parietal crest...

The Smilodon's Zygomatic arches are actually smaller than most modern day cats, indicating it's bite force was weaker than we expect!

Interesting... I guess with chompers like that you don't need it, just get something down and go for the throat to dispatch it quickly <~( see I read... I learn) XP
-.=.- I feel a bit dumb now (to many things wrong with the first comment to mention), seeing as I studied for a while to be a paleontologist, although I did tend to favor the Cretaceous (yay extinction theories) so I will take the hat and go to my corner...

Judging by the size of the lower jaw I would say they were pretty much unable to open their maw wide enough to bite anything without having their big canines blocking them.
I really love this. Are you perhaps a Biological-medical illustration major?
I wish I was :D
haha
No, I just study illustration in general. I'm in my final year of studies and graduate in may. This was done for fun using a lot of reference.
