Fall, 1331
Mera and Yubegsa flew through the aerial battlefield, the gryphon commander calling his people to rally and join them. While many gryphons had fallen in the engagement, more had only been thrown into confusion and scattered. Seeing a core unit reforming under Yubegsa- evidently with a friendly dragon- first individuals and then small parties joined the effort. In short order, some three dozen bird-lions had regrouped under the brown gryphon.
Yubegsa laughed.
“My people are ready to engage in some payback, Mera dragon. Let’s kill your traitors!”
Mera snorted in response. “We do what we must. That's our next target!”
A black Black Drake had just finished tearing an unfortunate gryphon in two when Mera and his squadron of gryphons came upon them.
Turning to face the new attack, the black dragon sent sheets of flame flying at Mera- who deftly avoided the volleys-then charged Yubegsa and the gryphons, hoping to break through the overwhelming numbers bearing down upon her. A gryphon or two went down in flames, more were wounded by claws and tail, but several bird-lions responded with slashes and pecks and specks of both dragon and gryphon blood sprayed in the afternoon air. Yubegsa quickly evaded the claws and lashing tail and then riposted, clawing at the patagium of the dragoness’ wings and tearing deep gashes. Hissing, the Black Drake turned and blasted at the gryphon commander, who barely avoided the sheet of flames that instantly incinerated one of his subordinates. Angrily Yubegsa dove again at the enemy dragon, joined by Mera and Logan, but before they could strike, other gryphons in the unit ambushed the Black Drake from the side and tore open her wounded wing. Unable to maintain lift, the black dragon suddenly and dramatically collapsed towards the ground below, still spewing flames as she fell.
Yubegsa cheered his troops, then turned to nod at Mera with a slight smile.
The bronze dragon returned the nod, if not the smile, and everyone continued on.
The next Black Drake was a red dragon that was attempting to attack Hthersarw in the distance. It was an easy interception: the bronze dragon swooped in to attack with volleys of flame, and the red dragon quickly responded and attempted a counterattack. However before he was able to charge Mera, Yubegsa and a half dozen gryphons pounced, quickly overwhelming the red and tearing him to pieces.
With a slight unease, Mera continued onwards, followed by Yubegsa and several other gryphons, their beaks stained in dragon blood.
In all of this Logan simply hung on the bronze dragon’s back, while fire and smoke and blood and wind swirled around him. There was nothing to do, even with his awlpike replaced by a bow.
Soon Mera came upon Hthersarw, Sdwere and Pmweqej in close proximity to each other fighting off attacks from four Black Drakes. Outnumbered, the Auxian Squadron was being hemmed in, with the just-eliminated red dragon evidently attempting to launch an ambush upon the trio while they were being distracted by the other four.
Instead, it was the Black Drakes who were surprised by Mera and the gryphons charging in.
“Attack!”
Led by Mera, Logan, and Yubegsa, the gryphons bore down upon the quartet of dragons, the bronze dragon throwing flames at the enemy, the human rider attempting to fire off arrows, the brown gryphon screeching encouragement to his troops. One of the Black Drakes was hit and wounded by a fireball, another by a few pinpricks of arrows, but all quickly began firing back. Several gryphons were shot down by sheets of flame, but the remainder traversed the hail of fire with Mera to hit the closest enemy dragon, another bronze dragon.
The two dragons tackled each other, twirling through the air like a whirligig. Somehow Logan managed to stay on his saddle as Mera grappled with the enemy dragon, who attempted to bite upon his mount’s neck, only to be driven back when Logan fired a few bow shots directly at the opposing dragon’s face. Instead, the enemy bronze dragon lashed back, smacking Mera on the side and knocking the air out of him, throwing Logan nearly out of his saddle, and sending his bow flying into space: only by grasping the horn with all his might did the dragonrider remain in the air. As Mera reeled, the Black Drake went for the kill-only to be intercepted by Yubegsa, who tackled the bronze dragon on the side before tearing into his abdomen. Disemboweled, the dying Black Drake flailed violently as he spiraled down to the ground.
“Thanks.” Mera stated when the cheerful brown gryphon, now half dyed red with blood, came over.
“No problem. Had to pay you back sooner or later, Mera dragon.” Yubegsa laughed.
Nearby, other gryphons had gone after the remaining three Black Drakes, but these enemy wyrms were more effective in fending off the attacks, downing several. Suddenly one of them was hit in the back by a volley of flame from Hthersarw attacking from the rear. With a screech, this blue dragon staggered before being completely engulfed in flame by fire from all three dragons of Mera’s squadron, moving in and catching the Black Drakes in a vice.
Then to Mera’s surprise, Yubegsa screeched another order, and while half of the gryphons continued attacking the Black Drakes, the other half of the gryphons split off, turned and charged his squadron.
*Gryphons!*
Hthersarw and the others quickly began raising flames to throw back the attack.
Racing over as fast as possible, the bronze dragon threw himself between his gryphons and dragons.
*Mera?* Hthersarw stopped and asked in surprise.
*Bloody skies, stop fighting the gryphons! We are on the same stupid side!*
The other members of Mera’s squadron quickly did as they were told, but Yubegsa’s forces kept bearing down on them. The bronze dragon immediately turned about-face and yelled at the gryphon commander.
“Stop! These are my people!”
Yubegsa immediately skidded to a halt, the other gryphons following suit, creating a disorganized mass of gryphons encircling the bronze dragon and the Auxian Squadron. The brown gryphon pointed at Sdwere.
“But they’re black!”
The black dragon looked insulted.
“They’re not Black Drakes!” Mera responded. “I know who my friends are! Get away from them!” He snapped at a gryphon attempting to creep up from behind Pmweqej.
Yubegsa squawked in annoyance. "How were we supposed to know? You all look alike!"
"Sheesh." Mera grumbled.
There was an awkward pause.
*What do we do now?* Hthersarw asked as the two ostensibly allied factions milled around in confusion.
Mera pointed at the two enemy dragons fighting in the distance. *Take down the two remaining Black Drakes.*
*Sounds good.*
***
The last two Black Drakes were a green dragon and a brass dragon. Knowing that they now had nowhere to flee, the two hovered back to back, guarding each other for a last stand. Dive-bombing attacks of the gryphons were ineffective, as were the sweeping flame attacks from Mera and his squadron when they arrived. The pair stubbornly held on despite overwhelming numbers, lashing out and sending a steady stream of wounded gryphons off the field.
Finally Mera turned to the brown gryphon.
“Can you take orders Yubegsa?”
“Of course. Us gryphons don’t see themselves as special unique gems like you scaly ones-”
“Good, take one of your best fliers and have them fly above everyone, and then when I give the signal, dive down upon Mr. and Mrs. Traitor here. Another force of the strongest gryphons can attack up from below.”
“Alright.”
Mera turned over to his own squad mates.
*Sdwere and Pmweqej, keep up the attacks, until you see my run then follow suit. Hthersarw, with me.*
The long-distance exchange of fire continued between the dragons and gryphons, before Mera suddenly charged straight at the enemy pair, quickly followed by Hthersarw and then the other dragons.
*Black Drakes! You have no more power in this war!* He yelled.
*We can kill as many of you traitors before we are done as we can!* The green dragon snapped in response.
Swirling to avoid the fireballs directed at him, Mera bore directly down at the brass dragon, Logan holding on for dear life in his saddle.
Just as the two opposing parties of dragons were about to physically collide, Mera roared:
“Now!”
Suddenly gryphons dropped down from above, while others led by Yubegsa came up from below. With opponents converging on every side, the Black Drakes hesitated, before choosing to attack in a random direction.
It was a fatal mistake. Within minutes, the pairing was broken up and the enemy dragons were isolated and overwhelmed by gryphons and pro-Auxian dragons coming from every direction. Mera soared through, searching for an opportunity to join in another duel, Logan upon his back with awlpike likewise at the ready. But there was now no one left to oppose them: Sdwere and Pmweqej were beating down the brass dragon, while Yubegsa and his gryphons were pursuing the green dragon, the last Black Drake, under Hthersarw’s watchful eye.
“That’s the last of them!” Logan finally cried as he glanced around, still grasping his polearm.
“Quite an aerial dance I have to say. Too bad I did nothing.”
“You helped slay that silver and hold off that other bronze dragon. That’s helpful enough.”
“I’m flattered that you saw me more as a sack of potatoes.”
“A sack of potatoes is more useful if it could protect my back.”
