Christmas came and went, a relaxing and comfortable occasion for all who celebrated the holiday. Families, friends and assorted loved ones could rest well, knowing that they were comfortable with the presence of their favorite people.
Such was the case for Zoro and Sammy, who naturally enjoyed each other’s company even when it wasn’t a holiday. The day was spent exchanging gifts, watching holiday movies, playing in the snow, and otherwise cuddling. Without the stress of work for either party, it was incredibly relaxing, certainly a fine reward for another year’s passing.
The day after, both Zoro and Sammy had thought their celebrations had ended, all gifts passed out. Their friends and partners gave and received their presents as well…with one notable exception.
Fortunately said exception had materialized into the house around the same time the loving couple were cuddling on the couch. Vanessa stepped through a portal, slightly embarrassed, much to the surprise of everyone involved.
“Oh, Vanessa!” Sammy said, lightly alarmed. They, too, seemed a little embarrassed. “Merry late Christmas, but, um…We weren’t exactly sure what to get for a chaos witch. We thought a Hot Topic gift card would be, well…poor taste.”
“Oh, I’m not concerned, darling,” Vanessa explained. “Your friendship and the friendship of Zoro are gifts enough for me.”
“That’s uncharacteristically kind of you to say,” Zoro nodded. Still, they gave an appreciative smile. “So then why are you here? Don’t you have to tend your shop?”
“Eh, that’s just a hobby,” Vanessa shrugged. “No, I just felt bad, is all. My studies and magical mischief led to me missing the holiday proper, and I neglected to give you my own gift.”
Now both Zoro and Sammy were alerted. They sat upright, looking at the witch in curiosity. “A gift from you?” Sammy asked. “That’s kind, but…”
“No, no, I insist,” Vanessa waved off. “You two are adorable and you’re clearing enjoying your time together. But my gift is to extend this time with a special twist.”
“Sounds about right,” Zoro remarked. They continued examining Vanessa carefully, trying to gauge what she had in mind. Like always, it was impossible to tell with her. “So what did you have in mind?”
“If you’ll just follow me to the kitchen,” Vanessa instructed. “That’s where I’ll be working.”
There was a light sense of unease from both Sammy and Zoro. Still, Vanessa was a friend—questionably trustworthy, but a friend nonetheless. They got up obediently, following her into their own kitchen.
On the counter were two vials, filled with a light brown liquid that shimmered in the fluorescent light. Next to them was a single cookie tray, with the oven nearby already preheated to an even 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Neither lover was responsible for setting any of this display up, nor were they responsible for turning on the oven. They were both painfully aware that Vanessa only just materialized inside their house and thus shouldn’t have had any time to preheat the oven herself. Again, their concern for Vanessa’s abilities rose.
But the witch smiled, gently patting the counter. “Drink one apiece,” she said. “Don’t worry, I made sure they’ll taste delicious.”
“Alright,” Sammy nodded, still uncertain about Vanessa’s intentions. Still, they slowly tipped the vial towards their mouth, tasting the concoction directly. Vanessa was right; the flavor was so sweet and warm, like a liquid cookie. “Mmm, not bad, actually.”
“Oh, I was going to—” Zoro said, having previously intended to drink theirs first to test it before their fiancée committed to the witch’s machinations. Seeing as they were beaten to the punch, however, Zoro drank theirs immediately after.
Once both parties polished off their potions, they waited patiently for Vanessa’s next step. “What now?” Sammy asked.
Exactly “what” they were expecting came to light within seconds. There was a gurgling sensation in their stomachs, a tightening feeling constricting their insides. The intensity picked up, now with a strong sensation across their entire body, inside and outside, as though they were being squeezed all over. Yet none of this was necessarily painful; if anything, it was rather soothing, like a massage.
Within seconds, both Zoro and Sammy could see their kitchen growing in front of their very eyes…only to realize, no, the kitchen wasn’t growing. Rather, they were shrinking, and increasingly rapidly at that. The initial panic they felt was offset by Vanessa scooping both of them up when they grew small enough for her to safely do so.
“You two look so adorable at that size,” Vanessa cooed, lightly tickling the couple. By now they were about six inches in height, incredibly small compared to everything else in the home. At least their clothes had shrunk with them, somehow, Zoro thought to themselves.
“Something tells me shrinking us is only part of your plan,” Sammy said, more curious than fearful. Vanessa gave a small happy clap at her statement.
“Clever!” she called. “Correct as always, darling. Yes, that potion featured shrinking as only half of its intended results.”
“So what’s the other half?” Zoro asked.
To answer, Vanessa conjured a rolling pin from thin air, holding it delicately as she started to maneuver both Zoro and Sammy onto the cooking tray. Both participants were savvy to her line of thinking; they could tell what was about to happen, even before she started rolling the pin across the surface.
When the pin started connecting, Vanessa slowed her literal roll to ensure maximum efficiency. For Zoro and Sammy, their experience was vastly different, feeling their legs start to compress not with a crushing sensation, but a squishing. Their lower limbs contorted themselves harmlessly into a flattened state, like cookie dough. Indeed, that’s what they had become: living cookie dough in the shape of their originally-sized selves. With Vanessa rolling her pin, they would soon look like cookies themselves. Add the oven to the mix, and the full picture formed itself.
“Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just turn us into cookies directly?” Zoro asked, now merely confused. They could still feel their limbs, as well as anything south of the pin’s movements. Still, with how pressed they were to the pan, and how flat they were, movement was impossible.
“Maybe,” Vanessa admitted. “But where’s the fun in that?”
Sammy gave a shrug at that. “She has a point,” they admitted. And they gave a smile. “Like those spell book ideas we do, right? It’s the experience.”
The roller soon reached their heads, pressing against them slowly to ensure uniform spreading. The process took two seconds, but the sensation of having their heads compressed to such a level felt like ages of pleasure. When the roller was lifted, Zoro and Sammy were left with blissful expressions on their faces, dazed and flattened entirely, immobile for the time being.
“Phase one complete,” Vanessa remarked. She admired her handiwork, smiling at the loving couple. “And now for the best part.”
Vanessa cautiously lifted the tray, opening the oven door as she did so. Then she slowly pushed the tray onto the metal rack within, letting it rest safely on the surface, and she closed the door.
The timer was set for fifteen minutes, not that either Zoro or Sammy knew or cared. The moment they slipped inside, the heat washed over them. At such a high temperature, it would have been natural for them to be sweating heavily at the very least—in normal circumstances, such a temperature would be outright burning or fatal. But these were not normal circumstances, and their benefactor was not about to harm either of them.
Rather, either due to the nature of the potion or Vanessa’s own doing directly, what would have been a scorching situation was instead like a trip to the beach for a sunbathing. Warm and cozy, not uncomfortable, and relaxing. Within seconds, the heat caused both tiny passengers to feel drowsy, nearly falling asleep from the sensation.
As they started nodding off, the oven continued to bake them both, their doughy forms hardening gradually. Much like an actual cookie, their skin turned from paper shades to a golden brown. Some of the finer digits—their fingers, their toes—had melted painlessly from the heat, merging into one stub for each limb. Their happy faces were starting to fade into themselves as well, the baking process rendering both Zoro and Sammy as blank slates.
The oven eventually dinged.
Wielding an oven mitt, Vanessa opened the oven door and slid the tray out from the rack. She set the tray on top of the stove, inspecting her hard work yet again. Zoro and Sammy started to recover their senses, waking up from their small nap, though they couldn’t speak right then, and moving was still difficult.
“Ah, careful,” Vanessa warned Sammy, who was trying to lift an arm. “You still need to cool off and harden. We don’t want either of you crumbling. Once I’m done decorating, you’ll be able to move as much as you want.”
Sammy obediently lowered their arm, waiting somewhat patiently. They had realized that they couldn’t see, speak, or even detect any of her face. The same was true of Zoro. They would have panicked, had they not come so far as to understand Vanessa thought this whole process through already; she surely had a solution.
Indeed, Vanessa was already pulling out a selection of icing tubes of various colors, as well as other sweet treats like gumdrops. “All the better to decorate you two,” she teased lightly.
Once both new cookies hardened enough to not break, she began her work of decorating her friends. It was like watching an artist on canvas, with her delicate strokes of icing gradually forming a frosting facsimile of their human selves. The hair, the clothing, and even their facial expressions received a candy variation in a flawless replica. Further, the icing was also enchanted, much like everything else up to this point; as she painted on the eyes and mouth, the cookies started to blink and make noise, testing their recovered features, and the icing moved with them.
“Oh, this is new…” Zoro said, surprised. They were starting to sit up now, nothing that their legs, once too cooked to even wiggle, were now quite flexible like rubber. “And I feel pretty sweet.”
“I bet we’re cute,” Sammy agreed, as they, too, began to sit up. They blinked with their icing eyes, and smiled with their new mouth.
“Oh, I can confirm that,” Vanessa grinned. She pulled out a small mirror, showing the couple their new forms.
Zoro and Sammy stood in awe at themselves, two little gingerbread people decorated as themselves, but pocket-sized. Every detail was correct, plus a few sweet embellishments for clothing. Plus they felt great, pliable and full of energy.
“Oh wow!” Sammy called in amazement. “I’m so tiny! And these gumdrop buttons…”
“One last thing before I finish up, darlings,” Vanessa said, with a patient smile. As the gingerbread people watched, she held a washcloth in the air, partially covering up their view of the kitchen table. Then she dropped it, revealing her final masterpiece.
On the wood frame of their table was a massive gingerbread mansion, designed to look exactly like their house they lived in currently, but with far more rooms inside. Colorful, baked to perfection, and with more sweets attached than a candy store; it was perfect.
Zoro’s eyes went wide, as did Sammy’s. “It’s like a vacation home inside our home!” they declared.
“Exactly my point,” Vanessa laughed lightly as she carried the cookies across the room to their new lodgings. “I’ve pulled a few strings and secured yourselves a week or two of paid vacation time, no questions asked. So you two can spend your time being sweet on each other.”
“Vanessa, I can’t thank you enough,” Zoro gasped in amazement. “This…all of this…”
“Think nothing of it, darlings,” Vanessa said. She gave the gingerbreads a light hug of appreciation for their own appreciation. “I’m just glad to spread post-holiday cheer in my own way, is all.”
“It’s so unique,” Sammy nodded. “I hope we can do this next year too!”
“If you want, or I can try more unique forms,” Vanessa nodded. “But for now, I’ll leave you two to your own devices. And perhaps we can see each other again soon, too. Agent’s been talking about putting on a “double date” at some point anyway.”
She gave one last playful wave to the duo, before vanishing in front of their eyes. Sammy and Zoro waved their little cookie arms until she was gone, before they looked at each other lovingly.
“Shall we?” Zoro asked. They gently opened the door to their tiny house, allowing Sammy to enter first. They giggled.
“Such a sweetheart,” they remarked in delight. Sammy skipped inside, and Zoro followed. They shut the door, to be left in two weeks of peace and quiet for the holidays.
