Dream based.
Still putting the notes in order, tried to write up something to go with this. May modify it later with something more resembling an actual story.
Problem is the main character is the rat... but the one with an arc is the badger... and Hutts sometimes IS the lime-light. BE the disco ball. B-E the disco ball.
Tim the rat lost his father to a border war, his mother left for the capital to identify the body and Tim slipped off into the jungle to escape the grief... and took several years to come back. A mis-routed train and several other factors I'm not fully clued in on kept his mother from returning for a long time, but during the start of her travels she encountered Hutts acting as protector mage for another village and asked him to come protect her village, something her late husband was in charge of with no replacements lined up. She also warned that many of the village elders abhor magic so maybe try to lay low. Hutts accepted the challenge and has been training the town guard and running an upscale restaurant by the pier for the last 12 years.
On this day Tim and Will (the badger) have been doing hand-to-hand sparring practice on the sand bank just up stream from the restaurant when suddenly the mayor rushes in. The local herd of large pointy herbivores is stampeding through the valley heading straight for the village! The north edge of town is a good 5-minute dash away, Hutts can already hear one of the beasts smashing through the defenses, so much to the surprise of everyone gathered he forms purple fire in his hands, aims it behind him, and rockets off over the town. Sometimes the best way to defend a town from stampeding dinosaurs is with a giant wall of purple flames thrown from the sky. Tim and Will make it in time to be useful and folk seem more surprised than angry. Huh... could've gone worse.
Half of the dream was Tims life before returning to the village, and another 40 minutes or so after this figuring out what caused the herd to stampede in the first place... aaaand it ended on a cinematic cliff-hangar.
