Mira was watching Paul as he was nervously mowing the back yard. Black caterpillar three feet long. were wriggling all over the ground. They couldn't hurt Paul because they were in another plane of reality but Paul was still terrified of them because of his indigo vision. Mira sighed to herself "Fifteenth time this month!" She unsheathed her sword and attacked the caterpillars. After she annihilated the rakshasas, she faced Paul. "You know creatures from the in-between feast upon fear, Paul. Pay no attention to them and they will not get stronger from your fears."
"I know, I know." Paul mumbled. "I have school tomorrow and I got a new gym teacher to replace the old one. I've never seen her before and I am not sure what to expect from her except for talks about her being a hottie."
Mira nodded understanding the situation. "Yeah, I know it is not easy to meet new people but this is school. You can't play hooky or talk your grandpa into giving you an excuse note."
"Give who an excuse note?" Dr. Oswald appeared on the back porch. He was still wearing his surgeon mask.
"Don't you ever take the damn thing off?" Mira glared at him. "What are you hiding behind the mask?"
"Nothing but my mouth." the preta said casually. He shrugged his shoulders at her. "Still upset about not vanquishing me because I am protected by the dragons?"
Paul look at the two. "Don't either of you know anything about dutch angel dragons?"
"Well, Jasmine, Rosemary, Oregano, Snowdrop, Wormwood, and Mandrake are not; if that is what you are asking?" Mira said.
"Well, I know about them." Dr. Oswald said. "They used to fight the Eldritch Lords."
"Hang on, are you talking about the NINE?" Mira asked.
"Is there any other more notorious?" the preta asked.
"You heard about the legends?" Paul asked now intrigued.
"Yes, I used to see them myself when I was alive and still human." Dr. Oswald said.
Paul's eyes widened. "You had indigo vision! W-why haven't you told me?"
"Oh, yes, do tell!" Mira coaxed. In her mind, she was hoping to get a legit reason to get the princess to revoke the protection off of Oswald so she could get rid of the creep. He was already getting on her nerves the last few weeks.
"Life in the 19th century was not easy; especially for people like me." Dr. Oswald said. "Seeing this stuff and raving about dutch angel dragon, asuras, pretas, devas, and the like would get you sent to the madhouse. So I kept it a secret. Not even my parents knew about it."
"But how did you know about the dutch angel dragons?" Mira asked.
"Well, there was one I knew about called 'Phosphorous'. She used to glow in the dark and acted very curious about why I could see her when most couldn't." the insane asylum doctor said.
"You never mentioned her to me." Paul said. "Was she your guardian?"
"Nah, just someone nearby where I worked. You see, she was completely distraught at the fact of losing so many of her charges that she felt betrayed by the devas for kicking her out because of the fight of the Nine Lords. I saw her transformation. She stopped glowing until her body was darker than the darkest night. Her underbelly, toenails, teeth, and eyes glowed a radioactive green. Her faced turned from sorrow to sadistic glee. She flew off leaving the abyss energy behind. What was strange was that the abyss energy manifested into the third dimension. It was accidentally discovered by another doctor. They at first thought it was some kind of tar until they discovered it was a good source of energy (electricity). We decided to use it power our machines. We even decided to use it as medicine for the patients."
Mira's and Paul's mouths hung open. "What the heck do you mean 'medicine'?"
"Well, we mostly used it as a medicine because it made the patients sleepy. We also used it as a pain reliever. Even us doctors used it for cough syrup or muscle joint relief. We; of course, had no clue what it was doing to our souls because the patients didn't seem to be in any danger." Dr. Oswald replied. "Well, as some patients were dying from the malpractices; my indigo vision allowed me to see the side effects of how the patients were being infected. Different species of pretas were appearing all over the place. Only I could see them; of course. I decided to make up a story to discourage the doctors from using the rakshasa energy. I told them it was bad for our health and it was causing the patients to hallucinate and it would in long term to us. Nobody believed me. I eventually decided to leave the cursed sanitarium. I was just about ready to go until I was murdered by a vengeful patient. The abyss energy made me into this." he gestured to himself. "As for Phosphorous, she never returned."
"That is a sad story." Paul said.
"You are a monster!" Mira crossed her arms. "Your transformation is what you deserve!"
"I am not looking for sympathy. I am just giving you what you wanted; answers." Dr. Oswald said.
Mira sighed, "Alas, I cannot lay a finger on you. Let's go, Paul, you grandpa is probably wondering where you are." the boy nodded and followed her into the house.
"If only they knew the whole story." Dr. Oswald said to himself. "I don't know how much longer I can protect them. This is more than they can handle." as he stepped inside, a pair of glowing green eyes was watching from the roof.
"Oh, Dr. Oswald, I would NEVER leave you alone; not in a million years!" the abyss angel dragon giggled like a lunatic.
