The Cat Nap was lively tonight which was normally a good thing. Tonight? Tonight it made Gryn jittery. He shook out his arms back stage, preparing himself. It’d been a few months since he’d opened the lounge with his partners Sieg and Yorick. While the other two busied themselves with managerial duties and bartending, Gryn’s place was the entertainment.
Well, part of the entertainment. The other half of his act was his close friend Beck. Gryn and Beck performed together, the lion playing a mix of swingy and jazz inspired piano tunes while Gryn played the parts of crooner and dancer. The two were returning to regular performances tonight after a month hiatus. The two worked well together, making sure the other had a chance to shine with the spotlight on them, culminating with a slow piano ballad while Gryn danced slowly on top of the piano. After the piano wrapped, he had his vocal solo, laying across the instrument and playfully taking his friend’s hat, before spinning and dismounting from the piano with grace.
But that final part had been Gryn’s source of anxiety and nerves. The last time they’d performed, he’d gone to do the final vault - the grand finale - when he messed up. His shoe had come untied, and as he leapt to his feet, he tripped on his shoelace, rolling his ankle when he landed. He’d managed to salvage the show, but he could hear the whispers about his notable limp as he left the stage. Thankfully he’d only sprained the ankle, but out of concern, he’d promised Sieg and Yorick he’d give it a month to rest and recover.
They’d made due without their usual show, with Beck performing some solo acts and having some friends come play for the guests with the promise of free drinks. But Gryn hadn’t taken the stage again. Not when he couldn’t trust his own feet.
Gryn was in his own head, blocking out everything until he felt a reassuring pat on the back. “You’re not gonna trip tonight, don’t worry.” Beck gave the sabre tooth a soft smile. “Just be mindful and stay aware when you’re dancing around. You took care of the source of the trip-up - pun intended - so you’ll do great.”
Gryn’s ears flattened. “I know, I know… Just, it’s gonna be weird ya’ know? I’m used to the extra weight down there. I know we’ve been practicing and I can do it, just not sure if I’ll nail it first try when it counts.” He looked down at the “solution” the duo had prepared. Gryn’s shoes were off to the side, and the sabre tiger had only his socks on - black with hot pink tips and heels to match his shirt. It was Beck’s idea - originally a joke but one Gryn took seriously - “You can’t trip on your shoes if you aren’t wearing them.”
Gryn had only a moment more to prepare himself, before he heard Sieg’s voice from beyond the curtain.
“And now, returning for their first performance in a month, please welcome back the Dashing Duo - Beck and Gryn!”
Gryn looked at Beck, before the lion turned to walk out onto the stage. “Show time, toothy.”
