23rd of May 2021, and Kaya De Bruyn, former WRC driver finishes 17th (out of 20) in the inaugural Furmula E championship, having only scored 6 points all season; a single 7th place at the LeMans ePrix in France with Vision Motorsport.
12th of June 2022; having been dropped from Vision Motorsport and being picked up by Terta Spirit, Kaya might have seemed to improved, scoring 13 points this year with three points finishes, one of which as high as 5th! But this meant little in the end as the South African finished 20th in the championship, only beating a reserve driver in 21st who only took part in one race and failed to score. She was confident that the season finale in Montréal, Canada, was her last race in the series.
22nd of November 2022 and news broke that Alyssa Nygaard-Ryder would not return to FT Cheetech for the 2023 season, which turned out be due to pregnancy with Furmula One driver Troy Ryder. Kaya did not think much of this at the time, but to her surprise she was the one to receive the call from the team a month later, wishing to sign the ground pangolin and partner Isabelle LaDuke.
28th of January 2023 and Kaya De Bruyn scored her highest ever qualifying position of 6th at the season opener around the Corniche street circuit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; within sight of her American teammate in 2nd. However later that day during the race; a combination of strategic genius from the pitwall and sheer determination from herself shown through multiple fastest laps, Kaya had done it. Taking the lead from LaDuke a few laps from the end. Both wanted the win. Kaya defended her position through the last corner but Isabelle got a better exit and was creeping up along side as both FT Cheetech crossed the line side-by-side for a 1-2! Kaya De Bruyn was just a fraction ahead of Isabelle LaDuke and took the win and 26 points; more than her last two seasons combined and led the Championship that weekend!
From no hope just over two months before, to being on top of the world; she may never win the championship, but she felt like she did that day and proved all that doubted her, including herself, wrong. You can achieve anything if you try and never give up!
I like to think this Afrikaans song sums up how Kaya feels right now!
