Richard slid down the wall landing next to Jessica and Harold. "What did you see?" Jessica asked.
"The Raiders", Richard said bluntly.
"Raiders? Wait, you mean…"
"Yes. They found us." Harold's eyes widened with fear whilst Jessica did her best to compose herself.
"What do we do?"
Richard turned and grabbed the sword from the unconscious minotaur. "We do nothing. You are getting out of here." He hands the sword to Jessica.
"What? Richard, we're supposed to stick together."
"And let this town crumble to pieces? I don't think so. I'm going to distract them. You are going into the forest and run. I'll catch up with you later."
"The forest? Richard, there are monsters in there!"
"You said to your father that you can fight. Are you telling me that you can't?" Richard firmly said. Jessica stared at him speechless, unable to form words. "Can. You. Fight?"
"... Yes. Yes I can." She finally said.
"Good. Keep to the shadows, make sure you don't run into a dead end and stick together. Go." Jessica nods and turns to run but Harold stays rooted to the spot.
"I... I didn't... Mean this" Harold stammered. Richard got down to his level.
"Harold, I'm sorry but now is not the time. You have to get out of here now, stay close to your sister, do what she says and I'll catch up. You understand?" Harold for a moment just stares at Richard before making a small nod. "Good, now hurry. I'll buy you as much time as I can."
With a tug from Jessica, Harold turned and they ran down the street, into the shadows towards the forest. "Be strong", Richard thought and then took off, squeezing through the buildings and up into the sky looking over the army and did what would be his most reckless action in his life.
"OI! ARSEHOLES!" He shouted at the top of his lungs catching the raiders attention below. He threw out his arms. "Ya missed me! Try again!"
There was a moment of silence and then a boulder flew up towards him but fell woefully short of him. "Oh come on, my grandma has a better arm than that! Wind it back farther!"
Another boulder flew up towards him but was still off. "Wow, that's pathetic! I feel so sorry for you!"
There was a barrage of colourful words from below. Aimed at him or each other Richard didn't care. Somehow this was working. Arrows flew up at him but again they fell short. "Guess you guys skipped gym day."
Now the raiders raged below and fired another boulder. This time he actually had to move out of the way letting the boulder harmlessly land outside the town. Just like he planned. "Hey you did it! Now try again but actually hit me this time!"
This time several boulders came at once. Richard swore to himself as he frantically dodged the boulders and the raiders below ran towards him firing arrows and pulling out swords. He got their attention, now he just needed to shake them off. He didn't have a plan for that.
The boulders and arrows flew at him again, brushing against his tail. It would only be a matter of time before they hit him so he had to stop them. But there were at least half a dozen trebuchets aiming at him. There was no way he could destroy them all. Unless… His magic. Of course. With his fire magic he would be able to destroy them from a distance.
He balls up his fist and punches the air. Nothing. He tried again but nothing happened. "Oh come on I did it easily a minute ago", he thought. Shaking his fist, desperately trying to reignite the fire within him, he failed to notice a boulder flying right towards him until the last moment. It bashed his upper body knocking the wind out of him and he plunged down to the ground.
The landing was hard and he tumbled over several times before coming to stop. It has been years since he's had a crash landing but in the space of just over a month he has crashed three times now. "I hope Lady Chiron doesn't find out", he thought out loud as he pushed himself up only to be smashed back down.
After a brief moment of haze a wolf mercenary was on top of him and pinned him down. "So this is how the false heir's guardian falls".
"The what?" Richard strained frantically looking for an escape.
"You don't know?" The mercenary chuckled, keeping a tight grip on Richard. "You signed up to protect a couple of kids without learning the consequences of doing so?"
He spotted a crane hook next to him. All he needed to do was get his tail to grab it without the mercenary realizing. Best keep him distracted. "Oh, you know me. Act first, think later."
"Am I meant to know you? All you knights look identical to me with all your false bravado".
"Eh, I get that but then again, I don't expect a guy who eats dirt for breakfast would understand." His tail brushes the hook but the mercenary wrapped his hand around Richard's neck restraining his airflow. "Did I hit a sore nerve?"
The mercenary snarls getting right into his face. "Taking what you want and then leaving the rest of us to grovel in the dirt. The old lord gallant was the same. But the new one will make things better for us all."
New one? As much as Richard wanted to know more his priority was to get this guy off from him and the hook secured on his tail now he just needed to make his next move. "Well, next time we meet, make sure I give you a better view".
The mercenary looks at him confused. That was all he needed. He whips his tail behind the guy getting the hook up his shirt. They looked behind themselves. That was Richard's second moment. He pushes himself up making the mercenary fall backwards. Lunging for the crane, he pulls on the rope to lift the mercenary up into the air.
"Coward! Fight me like a real knight!" Shouted the mercenary as he dangled in the air like an owl caught in fishing wire. Richard ignored him and turned to run, hearing more raiders approach.
He was outnumbered and outgunned; there was little Richard could do to save this town. Normally he wouldn't want to abandon this town but the kids. Harold was terrified and Jessica wouldn't survive long in a fight. Taking flight he flew towards the forest hoping upon hope that they were alright and that more importantly, he could find them.

Sir Richard is always true to his word
Always a daredevil and brave at heart
And knights not everytime need to be honest with his opponent - if the dirty fight methods are used for an honorable cause, it is quite normal and even good
Absolutely badass art for a cool piece of story is a nice sight to behold
