Whatever Happened to Uncle John? ©2023 by (((Trevor Patrick)))
--{rake away at those pine needles
all you want. There's always gonna
be more, and that tree's gonna
live twice as long as you will!}--
* * *
—just fighting the temptation,
to ignore the crow's oration,
of the one-and-only story
that he seems to know for sure
—‘cuz when the
better times make us complacent,
that's when you know
that danger's adjacent,
and any second now,
it's gonna jump-scare
right through that door
—and whilst few men
will spare the time to wait,
he can ALWAYS
find time to hate.
(Where DID all that time go?)
Yeah, Uncle John
has become
(and gone)
all old
and grey
and withered away;
and he had to fire the band,
(no more money to pay them)
since he now lives best he can
in a rusty van...
Down by the Riverside.

This is another rough, experimental piece that was stitched together from several fragments I wrote over the past few months as part of my 'guitar-practice scrawlings'.
(in short, I always keep the scratch pad handy, because sometimes snippets will come to me during guitar practice).
This particular one was heavily influenced by several different guitar practice run-throughs of the old Grateful Dead song "Uncle John's Band" from their 1970 album "Workingman's Dead".
Unfortunately, just like Jerry sang back in the day, the crow only ever had one story to sing to Uncle John.
(equipment: Samick LW-015G dreadnought acoustic guitar, standard tuning)

I often wonder how it is people end up like that, but being poor is no stranger to me... life sometimes button holes you, and other times it throws you a curve ball... at least he had the van...

Indeed.
Very often, it's very much a case of having to say: "There, but for the Grace of G-d, go I"
