Alex was humming to himself as he browsed through his neighbor's yard sale for inexpensive yet useful stuff to buy. He spotted a pair of yellow and brown bunny ears. He thought they looked cute. "Hey, sir, are you selling these?" Alex asked.
The neighbor replied, "Sure."
"How much do I owe you?" Alex asked.
The neighbor told him the cost. Alex pulled out his wallet and handed him the money. "Have a nice day." The neighbor replied.
Alex returned home and placed the rabbit ears on. He looked in the mirror. "This would look good for a Halloween costume." Alex's reality began to shift. He found himself inside of some kind of hedge maze. The rabbit ears attacked themselves to Alex's head. His human ears vanished, and the bunny ears were now his real ears. Alex gasped as he felt himself getting shorter. Yellow rabbit fuzz cover almost his entire body. A patch of brown fur over his left eye turned brown and the tips of his ears turned the same color. His hair remained on his head. A pink bow with a peppermint design in the middle appeared by his left ear. His voice became higher pitched, and his two front teeth elongated like a rabbit's. His legs altered to become more for jumping than walking and his hands morphed into rabbit paws. A cotton tail appeared from his seat. His eyelashes elongated and finally he became a she. The clothes on Alex vanished.
Alex looked around the hedge maze. She heard someone saying "Uh, oh, I should have taken a map with me!"
Alex followed the sound of the voice and discovered another rabbit that looked similar to her. Alex approached the lost rabbit and asked, "Hey, there, I'm Alex. Are you lost?"
She looked at Alex and smiled. "My name is Buttercream Sundae! I must leave before my friends miss me. Peppermint Tea." Buttercream said in a rhyme.
"What?" Alex asked.
"What?" Buttercream repeated as she stomped her hind paw and twisted her ears together. "Anywho." she replied calmly.
Alex realized she had a speech disorder called "the clanging" that caused her to speak in rhymes. She also decided to avoid using the word "what" so as not to get the strange reaction from her.
"Where do you recall you came from?" Alex asked.
Buttercream looked around. "Oh no, I can't remember." she answered. "It was raining in December, December."
"Hmm." Alex thought to herself. She paced back and forth as she brainstormed for a plan. Alex perked up. "I got it!"
"Really?" Buttercream asked.
"Yes, there is a trick I learned from a friend on how to find the exit to mazes. You keep going left until you find the exit." Alex remembered. "If that doesn't work, I'll retrace our steps and we will consistently go right and hopefully we can get out that way."
"Thanky, thanky, cotton hanky!" Buttercream smiled cheerfully. Alex led the way going down every single left turn. Eventually they hid a dead end.
"Let's go back." Alex said as she returned to the middle of the maze. "Let's try right."
"Righty flighty!" Buttercream replied.
The duo went right and unfortunately hit another dead end. Alex scratched her hair. An idea popped into her head. "Could we dig a tunnel under the maze and escape that way?"
"I would still get lost." She replied.
Alex said, "We can try again but this time, I have a fool-proof plan. Every time we turn a corner, I'll mark an 'x' on the ground with my foot so we'll know where we came from."
"Okey, dokey!" Buttercream replied. They tried Alex's new plan. This time it worked! They only ran into a few more dead ends but they made it through. The other pets at the exit were waiting for them.
Zoe asked, "Buttercream, who's you're new friend?"
"This is Alex." Buttercream smiled.
"Thanks for helping Buttercream exit the maze." Zoe said. "Would you like to join us for lunch?"
"Yes, thank you!" Alex smiled as she followed the other pets.
