The smell of hamburgers filled Shadow's nose as he let out a sigh of relaxation. Father's Day was one of Shadow's most favorite holidays. He always followed the tradition of having a barbecue in his backyard and grilling hamburgers and hot dogs with french fries and potato chips as well as soda. Of course, his relatives had visited in past years, but this year would be a lot smaller, as plane tickets to Maui, Hawaii were as expensive as a PlayStation 5. Shadow recently heard from his father, Zane Vaso, hearing that he would be visiting for Father's Day.
"Alexa, play Powerslave by Iron Maiden!" Shadow called to his Alexa, sitting out on the patio table, plugged into the outside wall. Shadow jammed out as he continued to grill hamburgers in one of his favorite Hawaiian shirts and orange shorts. Terrance was setting up the backyard picnic table, grabbing paper plates and plastic cups and sitting them on the table. Vex was sitting on the patio, on his Nintendo Switch in his favorite green Hawaiian shirt and yellow shorts. Shadow smiled, shaking his head. Terrance walked up to Shadow, hugging him from behind and kissing him on the cheek.
"We've raised that kiddo well, haven't we?" Terrance spoke.
"Yeah..he's got one bright future, that one." Shadow replied.
Terrance chuckled and laid his head on Shadow's shoulder.
"I love you, Shadow." He sighed. "This day is always special to me. I married the perfect hyena."
Shadow chuckled a bit. "I love you too, babe. But I'm not really perfect."
"You're still the best husband I could ever ask for. And the best father Vex could ever ask for." Terrance went on.
"Yeah, well..my daddy raised me right." Shadow replied. "Told me he wanted me to be a great husband to my partner and a great dad to my child."
"I'm still surprised he accepted that you were gay." Terrance said.
"Well, of course. There's no way in Hell Dad would raise me to be a bigot." Shadow responded, smiling a bit. He suddenly heard the doorbell ring.
"Speaking of which, I think that's him." He chuckled.
Terrance smiled and kissed his hyena husband on the cheek before going to get the door. When he opened it, he saw Shadow's much old-aged father, Zane Vaso, dressed in a black polo shirt and white shorts as well as gray sneakers.
"Howdy there, Terry." Zane greeted, his Southern accent coming out a bit. "Haven't seen ya since Christmas."
"Aloha, Zane." Terrance replied, smiling and letting him in.
"Where's my boy at?" Zane asked.
"Out in the backyard, grilling hamburgers. I think he's almost done actually." Terrance answered.
Zane walked outside to the backyard. As soon as he stepped out, Vex ran up to him and hugged him.
"Grandpa Zane!" Vex cried, happily.
Zane laughed and picked the little hyena child up, hugging him back.
"Haha, hey there, Vexy! Ya been a good kiddo to yer daddy for me?" Zane said to him.
Vex nodded happily. "I have! I got him an awesome X-Men comic for his birthday last month!"
Zane chuckled, sitting Vex down and ruffling his head. "Well aren't you precious?" He laughed, before walking over to Shadow. "There's my favorite son!"
"Favorite son? I'm your only son!" Shadow joked.
"How do ya know? Yer mama coulda went an' had her another child!" Zane joked back.
Shadow giggled and shook his head. "Well, always wanted a brother. Speaking of which, where is Mom? Why couldn't she come?" Shadow asked.
"She wanted to, son. But she got the dern flu an' had to stay home." Zane answered.
"Well, that's unfortunate. Tell her I love her and I miss her." Shadow responded.
"It is. Bet she woulda luved to see what a damn good father her baby turned out to be."
"Well, it's like you told me as a kid." Shadow said back. "Ya wanted me to be a "dern, good father to yer grandkids." I kept that promise."
Zane grabbed a beer can out of the cooler next to the grill and placed his paw on his son's shoulder. "And I'm so proud o' ya, son. An' ya better keep on keepin' tha' promise!"
"Or what, old man?" Shadow joked.
"I'll kick yer dern ass." Zane laughed.
"Well, you don't have to worry. I wouldn't do anything to hurt Vex, ever." Shadow replied.
"I'm glad. Tha' lil kiddo deserves a good father an' home." Zane spoke, looking over at Vex who was helping Terrance with setting the table.
"He does. Anyway, I think these are all about done." Shadow said. He grabbed some paper plates and began making hamburgers for everyone. As he did this, Zane smiled at the sound of Powerslave playing on Alexa. "I think this was one o' yer favorite songs as a kid." Zane commented.
"Oh, that's not even all of it." Shadow giggled. "Alexa, play My Favorites playlist on Spotify!"
Alexa soon began to play old 80s rock songs from AC/DC and Metallica, reminding Shadow of childhood memories, when he listened to rock mixtapes with Zane on the radio and on family roadtrips. Zane shook his head and smiled from how nostalgic it felt. "Woo doggy, ya got a lot o' me in ya." He chuckled.
"Yep. Especially your weight and appetite!" Shadow laughed, jokingly poking his father's belly.
Shadow sat down on the picnic bench with a plate of three hamburgers and a huge load of salt and vinegar potato chips. He sat a beer can next to his plate. Terrance soon joined him, sitting next to him. "Better enjoy that beer while it lasts, hun." Terrance giggled. "You know this is the only day a year I let you drink, haha!"
"I know, babe. I appreciate it." Shadow said back, kissing Terrance on the cheek.
Zane and Vex sat down across from them with their plates on the table in front of them. "Good lord, son. Ya really do got my appetite!" He laughed.
"Hey, I gotta keep the weight up!" Shadow laughed back, slapping his huge gut and biting into his first burger. "It really is good on him. He feels like a big, soft marshmallow." Terrance chimed in, rubbing Shadow's gut.
"Heh, well ya can thank my side o' the family fer that." Zane responded.
"Oh really? I didn't know." Terrance replied, seeming interested by this.
"It really is." Shadow spoke. "I get my tall height and big size and appetite from Dad's side of the family."
"An' yer love fer Hawaiian shirts and dad puns." Zane said.
"That too." Shadow chuckled. "I still remember when me and you used to stay up and watch Miami Vice after midnight."
"An' then there was that time when yer mama found us. Woo lord, I didn't hear tha end o' it." Zane reminisced.
"She grounded me and said I wasn't allowed to go to the arcade or comic book store for a month. It felt like the longest month ever." Shadow replied.
Terrance laughed a bit. "It's really good to have you here, Zane."
"Heh, well y'all are family to me. Or, what is it that Hawaiians call it?" Zane said.
"Ohana, Dad." Shadow answered.
"Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten." Vex chimed in, quoting Stitch.
"That's right, kiddo." Zane said to him ruffling his head.
The rest of the evening consisted of everyone eating and chatting. Eventually, night had fell and Zane decided to head back to the hotel.
"Do you really have to go, Grandpa?" Vex asked.
"I got to, Vexy." Zane replied. "Your grandmama's sick an' I gotta git home tomorrow an' take care o' her an' make her better again."
"I wish you could stay." Vex sighed.
Zane got on his knees and hugged his grandson close. "I know, kiddo. But I'll be back before ya know it. I'll be back aroun' by Thanksgivin'." He spoke. "But I wan' you to keep being a good kiddo to yer papa, ya hear? He's a good daddy an' he works hard an' does a lot fer ya."
"Yes, Grandpa. I will." Vex said happily.
Zane soon walked over to Shadow, giving him a hug. "I love ya, son. It was good, seein' ya again." He said.
Shadow hugged him back. "You too, Dad. Stay safe. I love you too."
Zane then gave Terrance a hug and shook his hand. "It was good seein' ya again too, Terry." He spoke to him. "Lemme tell ya, yer lucky to have my son as yer partner."
Terrance smiled and kissed Shadow's cheek. "I know I am. I wouldn't trade him for the world." He said happily.
"And Shadow, ya better keep on treatin' Terry right." Zane spoke.
"I will, Dad." Shadow promised.
"I mean it. Both in life and in be-" Zane started to joke.
"Uh, hey, is that your cab outside?" Shadow suddenly cut him off, trying to avoid embarrassment.
"Alright, alright. I'm just messin'." Zane laughed.
He gave Shadow one last hug before walking out the door. He got into a yellow cab and waved goodbye to Shadow from the car window.
Shadow waved from the living room window. "Aloha, Ohana." He said.
