Remember that one image I uploaded a while ago? Well, ratafari drew her again and I couldn't release it without writing a story for it. I'd like to thank him and many others for beta reading it.
I'd also like to thank doomedsizemarine for the suggestion for the titles. A last minute suggestion that turned out perfect.

Walking through the woods during your break gave you a brief reprieve from the monotony of your office job. It was lucky that your work was so close to a forest with a decent trail. Without it, you may have gone insane years ago. You could spend half of your lunch break enjoying a peaceful walk in the woods away from the encroaching cityscape. Or was nature fighting to take back its land? The dense brush near the city seemed to grow back quicker every week after its trimming by an army of landscapers. Either way, the literal change in scenery always puts your mind at ease after spending half of the day in a cramped grey cubicle.
The midday sunlight peeked through the tall glowing trees, lighting up a trail covered more in pine needles than in dirt, which crunched beneath your shoes, providing a relaxing rhythm until the path cleared and you walked down a narrow curvy trail. The heat of the sun from the occasional patches between the trees boosted your mood like you were another plant soaking in the solar rays for energy. Even the smell of the pines transported you to a new continent despite civilization surrounding the dense woods.
You were in deep now, about halfway through your usual route and as far as you could go before you had to turn around. Your lunch was only an hour and your walk took about twenty minutes, and you spent most of it eating lunch and watching funny videos on your phone. It probably wasn’t a good idea to stay out too long. You didn’t want to work up a sweat before you got back to the office or get back late. Spinning around, you traveled the same path you took but in the opposite direction-
A tall and eerie shadow, so dark it was like a hole in the world, caught your attention. Your fight or flight instincts kicked in and you immediately whipped around to face it. Instead of running or attacking, both of you froze up. It was difficult to judge its size and distance compared to you thanks to its void-like nature. You could tell that it walked on two legs like a person but its gait was too long to be the same species. You watched it amble through the brush and quietly weave between bushes, then suddenly pause and stand up taller than before.
The forest was totally silent. The wind was gone, as if it too was afraid to make itself known. Every animal in the area either fled or was paralyzed like you were. The figure slowly turned toward you, a movement your brain was somehow able to pick up despite its body absorbing all the light around it and seemingly missing depth. Its face wasn’t a face, but a shockingly white skull shaped like an animal’s head. Long midnight hair draped down its shoulders like a model’s after it had been corrected by a computer program. Atop its head was a large roll of hair that could only be a pompadour. It flowed in waves like surf crashing on itself in a funnel. Two canine ears poked out the top of its head, but with the pompadour in the middle it gave the impression they were being pushed out by it. The inside of its eye sockets glowed like ghostly candles, reaching your eyes despite being so far away.
Neither of you moved for a full minute, but you stared at each other for what felt like hours. The thing stood so still that you thought it was a statue. There was simply no way it could have been a person in a costume. Not this far out, not that detailed. You turn your head and look away to see if anyone is around filming your encounter. Maybe this is a prank and they’re dressed up in ghillie suits waiting to burst out and tell you it’s all a joke. Desperate for answers, you turn back to the creature for an instant-
It’s gone. Barely a second looking away from it and it managed to disappear. There were no trees immediately near it for it to hide behind, and you’re sure it couldn’t be laying beneath the foliage. Was it even possible for something to be that fast? Unsure if it was still nearby or merely a hallucination of your tired mind, you carefully followed the trail back the way you came. Every dozen steps or so you snuck glances behind you expecting the dark figure to pop up in your vision again. Minutes passed and nothing unusual appeared in your sight. You weren’t quite relaxed, still rapidly scanning the surroundings at every opportunity, but the-
The same tall and dark figure suddenly stood across a field from you, and you knew it wasn’t there a second ago. It seemed closer than last time, maybe even in striking distance if it really could move that fast. It was close enough that you could make out more details than before. It was definitely not Human, and the skull could not be a mask unless the person wearing the costume had no head to get in its way. Although its eyes were merely lights shining inside its eye sockets, you could feel them tracking you like flesh and blood eyeballs. A sixth sense tingled inside your brain warning you that you were being watched.
Carefully making sure the creature stayed in your vision, you took a few steps away from it then stopped when you realized you would eventually lose it if you kept walking the same way. Going off the trail just to keep it in sight was a bad idea, but losing this thing was arguably even worse. Its glowing eyes carefully followed you while you circled it. Instead of running off and hoping for the best, you decided to test a theory. You whipped your head away as fast as you could without hurting yourself, then looked back where the creature was supposed to be and it was gone. Your theory was confirmed: This thing wasn’t moving fast. It was teleporting when you weren’t looking at it.
Finding a legitimate supernatural phenomenon would normally be a great thing. Who wouldn’t want to be the first person to discover an actual magical creature? The only issue was that you had no idea if this thing was hostile or just really curious. And how could it exist for this long and not be seen by others? Maybe this thing or things like it are the ones who make all those hikers go missing every year? All of these thoughts made your pace go from a casual walk to a hurried one like you were late to class but weren’t allowed to run in the halls. You swept your head left and right looking out for the creature like you were looking out for a hall monitor. It hadn’t attacked you, and its body language was more curious than hostile, but the way it suddenly appeared in random spots was too damn unnerving.
You caught it in your peripheral vision for a second only for it to disappear again and then reappear behind you on the trail. This time it was much closer to you and much larger than you originally thought, standing at least a head taller than you. At least, that’s what it seemed like. It’s- no, her fur still absorbed so much light that it made judging its body difficult. But now you could see the curve of its hips and chest and it was obvious it was a woman, or pretending to be one. You were so distracted by this revelation that you didn’t change your pace when she put one leg behind her in a typical runner’s stance. Your heart rate instantly went as fast as it could and adrenaline screamed in your veins.
This time when you turned away from it, you ran as fast as you could. Better to get to work covered in sweat than to never arrive. You started at a light pace, heart already beating fast from the scares and the longer than usual walk in the middle of the day. At first, you didn’t bother looking around for the creature knowing it could be anywhere. Soon though, it didn’t matter where your eyes went. The creature kept appearing in your vision, alternating sides in different poses like it was a game to her. You would have laughed if you weren’t scared out of your mind. Your pace and breathing became erratic and the creature started appearing more frequently, even jumping onto the trail and barely missing you.
It was definitely running alongside you now, sprinting off the trail and somehow staying silent despite moving so fast through shrubbery. Its hair whipped around its skull and flew in the wind, and the massive rat’s nest atop its head bounced like a plate of gelatin was stapled to her skull. It wasn’t just keeping up with you but it could have run far ahead of you if it weren’t literally disappearing behind every tree it passed and reappearing behind one further back. Sweat covered your forehead and dripped down your face onto your neck. Your heart felt like it was trying to pound a hole through your chest and escape, and the same pounding of blood tried to break through your forehead. You turned your head and saw the creature running closer to you. This time though, it was moving slower but still keeping up.
Was it bigger than before? It went from sprinting to a casual jog but still managed to keep up with those inhuman strides. The adrenaline racing through your burning veins brought clarity to your thoughts. It was wearing clothing: Black shorts and a sports bra that almost matched the exact color and texture of its fur. The clothing was shinier when the light touched it and it was tight on her body. She looked strong beneath the fur and her body looked like a parody of a fitness model with chiseled muscle that somehow made it past the dense void of fur. She turned her head down to you and bore into you with those glowing eyes. Next, she did something that surprised you. One of the lights went out for a moment. Did she just wink at you?
A root hidden beneath the pine needles grabbed your foot and wrenched you toward the earth. Luckily, instinct took over and you managed to land without hurting yourself, even rolling onto your side and ending up on your back. You lay there on the forest floor for a moment, stunned by what you had seen just now. It wore clothes and sent you a wink. It was intelligent enough to act like a person. Was it flirting with you, or toying with you before it ate you? Was there a difference?
You shot up instantly in a panic. Knowing that you were being chased by a horror movie monster was good motivation. You spun around again like a radar scanning for threats but found no sign of the beast. You felt pine needles poking your back and carefully brushed them off, even going as far as taking your shirt off and turning it inside-out and shaking the dead needles out of it. Now mostly needle free, you put your shirt back on and jumped when you saw two glowing eyes staring at you from above.
This time, the creature was contorted around a tree, feet clearly visible on one side but its torso unnaturally elongated to reach around the other like it was trying to hide behind it. But there was no way she could hide herself at her current size. She was twice your height and her claws left massive gashes in the tree’s bark. Worst of all was that she was standing as still as when you first locked eyes; if it weren’t for the subtle movement of her hair in the breeze you would think she was an art installation. Large globs of saliva leaked from her mouth and onto the trail and her eyes changed hue, almost going red.
It was time to leave. You were pretty sure the end was near, and you would be safe once you got out of the forest and near a major road. There was no way she could hide from that many people at that size. You sent a glare up at her, more for your own sake than to intimidate her. Instead of exploding with hatred and attacking like you expected, her eyes pulled up and turned into thick arches. Her lower jaw bone pulled up along unnaturally with her eyes and the tip of her mouth slowly opened. She was… smiling? Fearing for your life after that awkward display, you carefully turned around and braced yourself for the giant to appear right in front of you. Luckily, she seemed to respect your tenacity and the path was clear for you to resume your run.
Heart hammering in your chest, lungs and throat burning like a jet engine, and legs moving faster with each step. You felt like you were running faster than you ever have gone, possibly outpacing some of the fastest Humans in history just by running on fear. That wasn’t good enough for you though. You needed to be faster than a mythical monster, not other people. Said monstrosity was now pacing itself behind you and keeping up despite walking with a downright casual gait. It was almost insulting how nonchalantly it swung its hips with each step. And its steps were eerily quiet. The pine needles crinkled beneath its feet but not nearly as loud as they should have. Despite having feet that mostly looked Human with some additional claws, it walked on its toes in a mesmerizing way. You kept sneaking glances behind you but focused mostly on your run so you wouldn’t trip again. Every time you looked behind you the thing was closer than last time, and every time you looked away the sound of it stepping on pine needles disappeared. It was like it didn’t exist while you weren’t looking at it.
The sight of the trees reaching their end gave you an extra burst of adrenaline that sent you past the limits of your frail mortal shell. Something inside you felt like it was going to snap, but you managed to break past the edge of the forest and jump over a log like you were at a track meet. After an ungraceful landing you barely managed to stumble across the grassy field and onto the nearby fence blocking the sidewalk. There were no cars on the road but that wouldn’t last forever. You flew past the fence and onto the sidewalk then grabbed onto the other side for support, immediately twisting around to face the dark woods you just escaped.
Standing on the other side of the field in full view of the road was the creature. She was holding onto a nearby tree and encircled it completely with one of her clawed hands. Her body was moving like… she was chuckling. That bitch! If she showed her face, her skull, whatever! If she showed up near your work you were going to run her over with your car. Or stub her toe at least. The giant creature sauntered off into the woods with a swing of her hips and bushy tail, and disappeared behind the dark treeline like a ghost that only existed in your mind. You stumbled back onto the fence and sat on the sidewalk. Your lungs burned and the fatigue of sprinting the entire way back finally caught up with you.
It took you longer than you would have liked to recover after the chase. You tried to stay active despite your sedentary office job but you were too mentally drained after work to want to exercise most days. It was biting you in the ass now, but at least you were still alive despite your lack of preparedness. The walk back to your office made for a great cooldown but you were kicking yourself for your mistakes. Why didn’t you pull out your phone and record the creature? Why didn’t you scream for help? Were you too afraid to look crazy if it turned out to be a hallucination? There were a lot of things you could have done in hindsight. At least you went to work wearing tennis shoes. You wouldn’t have made it if you were wearing dress shoes.
The walk back was straightforward. Just going straight down two roads and you would be in the air conditioned safety of your workplace. You heard the distant roar of an airplane engine above you and you realized that you heard nothing of the sort in those woods. The silence of the forest was itself deafening to your ears after living in the suburbs so long, and the noise of civilization brought a sense of peace after your encounter with what could have been a nature spirit. You rounded the corner of your work and headed for the employee entrance at the back of the building while trying to come up with excuses for why you decided to go for a run during your break.
Despite being back in the claws of civilization, there was a serious lack of moving vehicles on the road. The only noises you could hear were the idle hum of the plane far above you and the roar of the highway off in the distance. That wasn't necessarily cause for alarm. It wasn’t uncommon to get a lull in traffic in this area. Still, something had you on edge. That same oppressive feeling like you were being watched bore down on you like you were back in the forest about to be chased. The employee entrance was only a minute walk away from you but you were too curious to not take a peek behind you. You slowly turned your head around and saw…
Nothing. Same old corner you just turned past. Was it wrong to tempt fate? Maybe you are just so bored by your mundane life that the idea of being chased by a monster was still better than returning to work. You sighed, out of relief or sadness, and turned back around to head back to work.
The glare of the sun now out of your eyes, you got a clear view of a tremendous paw rounding the other corner of the building and carrying a gigantic creature along with it. The same giant before stood up from a crouch around the building and gently walked to your side of it. Her feet made almost no noise despite weighing more than the building she was standing next to. Her waist reached above the three story concrete monolith, for crying out loud! She walked right up to you and planted herself directly in between you and the employee entrance, forcing you to look straight up just to see those hollow sockets glow down at you. You noticed a hint of amusement in her movements, like a pep in her step or a wiggle of her hips. She draped an arm on top of the building and relaxed, shoulders drooping significantly and a deep sigh rumbling from high above you.
“Nice chase. I win though.”

Don't call it a comeback! I've been here for years!
Thanks for reading it! I wanted to get this out sooner but I was adjusting to work and lagging on the second part.

Normally I only like size diff to a point... but those abs, that bod... jesus christ
Cute story. Feel like this could launch a comedy series. I like how the protagonist gets more irritated than afraid as it goes on.
