Chapter 3
As the pups made their way to the secret facility in Kensington where the facility would host the special grand prix, Harold and Codi arrived at Mayor Goodway’s office to officially make the proposition. “Oh, I wish I didn’t have to do this,” she winced as they arrived.
“I think we’re stuck with this, Mayor,” Francois put in. “Otherwise, we’ll be blown to bits.”
“Those two tykes have the technology to tear our town apart,” Captain Turbot added. “They’re a much more massive threat to our lives than the mischievous misdeeds of Mayor Humdinger, whom, as you know, is still in prison.” He turned to Harold and asked, “Or has he broken out?”
“No, he hasn’t,” Harold replied. “Anytime he tries to escape, or tries to get those kittens of his to help him escape, both parties get an electric shock.”
“Harsh.”
“I know. Anyways, I think you know why we are here. It was supposed to be a surprise, though, but if it wasn’t those pups, then I don’t know what to think. I didn’t leak it.” Harold’s and Codi’s intentions were for the whole proposition to be a surprise, but thanks to the nano-probe secretly filming them and it making the national news, Goodway already knew why they were coming. It made Harold’s parents angrier than ever before, but at this point, they admitted, they didn’t know what to do with their son anymore. “If only he was only as smart as the other kids his own age,” his dad lamented to Goodway, “but it wasn’t to be; he’s too smart for his own good. And if supervillains of his type what smart people end up becoming, then I’d rather be stupid!” (The parents were present because they wanted to talk their son into giving up the whole thing, as well as punish him with a brutal beating in the form of using a whip on him, but when they saw that Codi Gizmody, clearly the biggest threat between the two, they held back. “Okay, let him make a complete idiot of himself,” they said. “We’ll beat him up later.”)
“You can be smart without being a supervillain,” Farmer Al replied. “Science wasn’t my strong suit, though.”
“Be strong, mayor; don’t do this!” Alex Porter pleaded.
“I am afraid I have no choice, Alex,” Goodway lamented. “They’ll just take this town by force if I don’t give them a chance. Where did I go wrong? Where did I go wrong? I’m not even worthy of this job anymore!”
“BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!” Chickaletta clucked, wanting more corn.
“What do you mean, ‘you’re not worthy of this job?’” Francois inquired.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, everybody! I’m just a nervous wreck right now.” Goodway took a moment to calm herself down, as well as wonder why she said what she just said; this was way out of character for her. It was quite clear that she did not want to lose her beloved Adventure Bay. But because Harold and Codi had their robots and other gadgets with them, including the Relocator that would have zapped everybody to the moon (which ultimately zapped Codi herself to the moon in the end), Goodway caved in to the pressure.
“Okay,” she said to the two kids when she finally got a hold of herself. “What am I doing? What amount of money do I owe you? Or, rather, what did you say you owed me?”
“Well, she’s not buying the town,” Harold replied, making Codi groan. “I am the one destined to be the ultimate mayor. However, here’s what’s going down. Have you heard of a video game called ‘F-Zero?’”
“I have, because I was watching videos of that on the internet. I don’t want the PAW Patrol to get blown to kingdom come! I know you’re plotting to do that!”
“Not necessarily,” Codi replied. “The offer we’re making is this: we’re going to challenge your precious PAW Patrol to race against us in a real-life version of that very video game. If your PAW Patrol wins, you can keep the city. If one of us wins, you give us the city, although in my case, I am still willing to give you a bunch of money for it.”
“I don’t trust you!”
“BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!” Chickaletta clucked again.
“Want me to zap you to the moon?” Codi summoned her Relocator.
“I’ll do it! I’ll do it! Just leave me alone! THIS IS A TOTAL DISASTER! EVERYTHING’S A DISASTER!” Goodway went into another meltdown of hers, leaving Codi to mouth to herself, “Wow; she truly is that stupid. I can’t believe this town would trust a lady who won’t control her emotions over a genius. Oh, well; whatever. This town is mine!”
After much stalling, Goodway finally got herself to agree to this. The townspeople were unhappy with her doing this, but they were sore afraid of the robots the kids were using to plan their assaults, and it was clear they were going to keep their promises to destroy Adventure Bay. In the end, they felt it was best to just leave her be, and as a result, she had a hard time going to sleep that evening; she wept all night long. “We are doomed! We are doomed!” she cried. “Even if the Mighty Pups do win this competition, they’ll still destroy our town!”
Harold and Codi used their special VR simulation technology when they returned to their respective homes to practice.
Meanwhile, the Mighty Pups and Ryder arrived at the special facility that was selected to host this event, although, along the way, they watched videos of the game so they would be familiar with what Codi and Harold were getting them into. When the Mighty Jet came to a landing, the pups were eager to run inside, but they filed out in an orderly fashion. “Whoa, dude! This place is awesome!” Zuma exclaimed as they walked inside, already feeling the special effects. “It’s like we time traveled into the future!”
“What is this place?” Chase asked. “I don’t remember seeing this the last time we were here.”
“It functions like a normal sports arena, but it also employs that special sort of virtual reality technology,” Ryder explained. “I know because I’ve seen Harold use this before. He was planning to use it against his uncle, but the Kitten Catastrophe Crew got in the way.” (The kittens mistook it for a laser and ended up blowing up the whole thing, forcing Harold to abandon the idea.)
The group walked through the hallways to the main arena floor and setting that would create the various tracks used for the race, eventually sitting down at a set of bleachers. However, the room was dark, because the special effects were coming into play. “Oh, no; now we can’t see a thing!” Everest exclaimed.
“Stay close, pups. I think they’re just getting the races all set up.”
“Oh.”
“Oy-oy-oy!” Tracker winced. “I hate the dark!”
“It’s okay, Tracker; it’s about to go bright.” (Ryder had apparently set this up beforehand.)
Just then, the scene got brighter, showing a full scene of the first track (Mute City I), but due to the way it was positioned, everybody was looking at the finish line from the side, with a huge screen showing all the action. Nathan and Bradley then arrived on the scene, although they were not driving hovercars. However, they were acting in character, performing one of their promotion skits taken directly from the show; both the lion and the bulldog were well versed in the martial arts, which helped them do the skit without injury or fatigue. The pups got some good laughs out of it, given how cheesy the dialogue was, but it didn’t end with the usual quips of Braticus (Bradley) proclaiming he’d be back to cause more trouble once again. (Many episodes ended with him proclaiming something along the lines of, “I will return!”, with Nathan responding with a quip of his own such as, “Yeah? Well, don’t forget to write!”) Both actors were dressed as their characters, including an eye patch for Bradley, and a typical superhero mask for Nathan. (Braticus wore an eye patch in addition to his military dictator’s uniform, but he didn’t actually need the eye patch. He just thought it looked great as part of the suit.)
The pups howled and clapped to show their appreciation for the skit, and the two actors took a bow. “Thanks; we thought you’d enjoy that,” Bradley smiled as the applause finally died down. “In any case, welcome to the Virtual Reality Arena. My brothers and I co-manage the place when I’m not producing the show, or voicing Braticus. We make any sport a reality, especially if teams don’t have a place to race or play, and so we do the traditional sports as well.”
“But today, we’re doing ‘F-Zero,’ which, fortunately, is a game I know because my brother was a champion at the game. He was always kicking my butt,” Nathan added. “Anyways, I understand your enemies want you to race against them?”
“That’s correct,” Ryder replied, “and what’s worse, they took advantage of Mayor Goodway not controlling her emotions. As a result, she has agreed to give them control of our beloved Adventure Bay.” (Goodway had called Ryder to confirm this. She felt that while it was the worst decision she had ever made in her life, she honestly didn’t see any other alternative. In her call, she made the comment that Chickaletta was just as worried for everybody as she was, even if that didn’t match reality. The chicken just wanted more corn to eat; that was the reality.)
“Whoa; this is the most high-stakes event we’ve ever hosted, then,” Nathan commented. “In any event, we’d better get you all suited up and ready to race. Note that in the interest of fairness, you and your opponents will be given ample time to practice.”
“Sounds good to us,” Rubble replied.
“In the meantime, let’s get you all suited up and teach you the basics.”
“MIGHTY PUPS ARE ON A ROLL!” the pups cheered, and everybody ran to the area that Nathan led them to, so that they’d start their own journey towards becoming F-Zero Masters.
