Chapter 11
It was all going downhill for the villains, and both were secretly planning their revenge since they knew they could not win the championship given the circumstances. They could not accumulate enough points to make a comeback, and the only way for Harold to have a fighting chance was if he had won every race, and the Mighty Pups didn’t score a single point. However, they did score, and that was enough to lock it in. Even better was the fact that Chase had won all three of his races. Skye followed it up with a win on Death Wind II. As a result, the scores in the King League were now 30 for the Mighty Pups, 10 for Harold, and 10 for Codi.
“Way to go, Skye,” Nathan congratulated her when she made it back to home base. “You definitely made up for the last one.”
“Thanks, Nathan,” Skye replied. “I think it helped to know what was coming. I just had to remember the track was different. Does that happen with every track?”
“For the most part, yes. The construction process for each track uses just the one arena, and they close off one section to open the other section. That’s why you took an abrupt left turn in the middle of the back stretch, whereas on the last go-round, it was just an oval.”
“Got it.”
“Mute City was sort of the exception because Chase did what he did the first time, except it was a nighttime setting. One during the day, one race at sundown, and one at night. That’s why there’s three races in total.”
It was time for Tracker to race again because the next track to be raced was Port Town II. “Okay; you’ve done this once before,” Ryder told him, trying to help him feel positive about the next race. “You can do this again. Just watch out for those magnets on the side, okay?”
“Okay, amigo,” Tracker replied as he got into his hovercar. “I can do this!”
“How do you feel right now, Mayor?” Hailey Daily asked Mayor Goodway. “Whatever happens, you can’t lose your town to one of those two rotten kids.”
“I do feel better now than I did before,” Goodway replied. “I still worry that those two kids will still try to take my town away from me, but they can’t take it away from me because of this ‘F-Zero’ tournament. However, I have so many times thanked the PAW Patrol for all they’ve done for us, and this is the biggest thank you I have ever owed them thus far. I can’t imagine what Adventure Bay would be without Ryder and the pups. I’m so grateful.”
“BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!” Chickaletta clucked.
“And you can see Chickaletta is just as grateful.” (That wasn’t a true statement, unknown to Goodway. The chicken generally ignored everything around her and just did her own thing, especially if she was too busy eating or sleeping. Sometimes she’d cluck just for the heck of it, and that was what she did here.) “She’s not my deputy mayor for nothing, you know.” (Goodway had said this because she had accidentally dropped a photo that Bradley picked up and handed to her after looking at it, and the photo contained the golden statue of Chickaletta.)
“Uh, okay.” Bradley scratched his head, then turned to Nathan and silently mouthed, “I knew these people were weird, but that’s ridiculous! Did you know she keeps a shrine to her pet with that golden chicken statue?”
“Yes, I did, actually,” Nathan mouthed back, “but the moral of the story is that you never judge a book by its cover. However, I think you’re right to say that the chicken was never paying attention to anything this entire ordeal. But if the mayor wants to do that, let her do that.”
The race got off to a shaky start for Tracker just as the last one did, but since he knew what was to be expected, he handled it much better, and he was not overshooting anything like he was on the last race. The only mistake he made was forgetting to use his Super Jets, and as a result, he noticed he had all three on the final lap. Any Super Jets not used were wasted, and when he saw he had a full set of Super Jets, he said to himself, “Oops. I forgot that I had all three boosters. Olvidé que tenía los tres refuerzos. But I am going to use them now! Here goes! ¡Aquí va!”
He activated each one at what he thought was the right moment, since he wanted to safely pass Harold and Codi without causing any damage to his own hovercar, and thus losing a big chunk on the power meter. Instead, Harold and Codi ended up bumping into one another after the jungle pup whizzed by them just in the nick of time.
“Ooh; that was gutsy,” Sonic said.
“Get out of my way, stupid!” Codi sneered.
“You get out of my way!” Harold shot back as he used his last Super Jet.
In the end, when all crossed the finish line, Tracker was way ahead of the two kids. Now the Mighty Pups were up to 45 points. It came down to a photo finish for second and third, and the second place finisher ended up being Harold by just a split second. 10 more points for him brought his total to 20, while Codi was at 15.
“I’ll get you for that!” she huffed, continuing to want to pick a fight with Harold.
“So what if you do?” said Harold. “We all know I am the bigger genius.” He left it at that because his grandmother (Helga) was giving him the look. “And...well, that’s all I am going to say about that one.”
“Idiot!” Cody sneered to herself, referring to Harold, as she stormed off in her anger. “I hate him!”
From the stands, Amy observed that Codi was having a fit and asked, “What’s her problem?”
“I think she’s just angry because she wasn’t able to do even a single piece of damage,” Goodway replied. She then told Sonic and his friends parts of her side of the story they didn’t know in regards to how Codi tried to demolish all of Adventure Bay so she could build her dream city, Codi Cove, in its place. “This is why,” she concluded, “you frequently hear her say to me, ‘This all could have been avoided if you had just sold me the city.’ You don’t just walk up to somebody and ask them if you can buy an entire city. Life doesn’t work like that.”
“So why was she trying to send you all to the moon?” Silver asked.
“That way, she was free to do what she wanted without any disturbance, and there would be nothing I, as mayor, could do about it. In the end, she ended up on the moon herself. I can only guess that she built her own rocket to return to this world, but as soon as she did come back, she was arrested.”
“It marked the first time,” Ryder put in, “that I called the entire PAW Patrol, regular and reserves, into action, since Codi’s Relocator was putting everything in the wrong place.”
“She and that other kid may be geniuses,” Shadow commented, “but truth be told, they don’t stack up to the Doctor.”
“I have to second you on that,” Tails echoed.
“The Doctor?” Coral asked in confusion.
“He means Dr. Eggman,” Skye replied.
“Oh.”
The group then got to know Coral, taking note how she and Skye were cousins, even though she ultimately was needed back in Puplantis, working with the Mer-Pups to help keep that society functioning. This led to another surprise as well: Moby was in the audience watching the proceedings, although he didn’t have McSquidly with him. Why? He was going through rehabilitation himself. He previously hated life as a mer-pup because he couldn’t stand the constant singing and celebrations that went on as part of life in Puplantis. “This is why I’d rather be a land pup,” he said.
“So you just couldn’t stand the noise because it happens 24/7?” Sonic asked him.
“Right. It was going on all the time.”
Red Canyon II was the fourth race in the King League, and so that meant for the pups, it was back over to Rocky to race. Like Skye, he knew what to expect. Unlike Skye, he had won the first race at Red Canyon. He didn’t have a problem winning this race either, but the previous race was won by a significant margin between first place and second place. This one was a lot closer, because Harold was threatening him every turn of the track, ultimately having to settle for second place (again). Codi, however, did not; she was too far behind, and too angry to think about it. As a result, she ended up teleporting back to the main deck (again) after her car had exploded (again).
“That’s what she gets for trying to cheat,” Bradley commented. “And by ‘cheat,’ I am actually referring to the original contract she wrote, where she set it up so that she herself could always win.”
“Does she know you changed it?”
“She didn’t before; she does now. I was waiting for the right moment to tell her, but this wasn’t it.” Indeed, due to another malfunction that the staff was working to fix licekty split, the system decided to inform Codi that her initial proposition for the contract was null and void, which only angered her even more. But she was too upset with herself and her performance in this ‘F-Zero’ tournament to even think about her Co-Demolisher. She did want to use it on Kensington, though.
The pups now had 60 points in the King League, while Harold had 30, and Codi had only 15. Marshall was getting prepped up for his race. “Ready or not, I’m coming in hot!” he announced.
It was finally Marshall’s turn to race, and it was the dreaded Fire Field. Would he be able to score a victory and pull off a perfect score? Would Harold or Codi try to cheat to ruin that, or would the AI get them for what they did? And, on a different note, would Chickaletta ever pay attention to anything but herself?
