Faction Units (Empire Military) Empire Soldier
Title: Imperial Military Soldier
Nicknames: The boys, the lads, Ironheads, the Golem's vanguard, shiny boys, clanker lovers, the "You fucked up" guys.
Faction loyalty: As the name, filigree, literally everything about them would suggest, the Imperial Soldiers have full devotion towards the united houses of the ruling Engrievion Empire, though they mainly serve its ground-based military branches, making up the majority of its frontline combat force.
Type: Standard infantry.
Assigned equipment:
Attire- The armoured uniforms of the Imperial Military remain as one of the most recognizable aspects of their outward appearance. Being a utilitarian yet rather prideful society, the armourers and tailors within the Empire have taken extensive measures to ensure the suits were as practical, versatile, and fashionable as possible, with a top layer of medium plate metal, mid-layer of chainmail, all fastened above heavily padded leather and cloth. The metal in particular consists of a finely smelted alloy of iron, steel, and adamantine layers, bent into sharp, streamlined angles to make direct thrusting strikes near impossible, glancing blows and stray shots failing to bother the human inside. Meanwhile, strewn across the attire are sets of various leather pouches, ammo packs, and holsters to carry weaponry and supplies, which often vary from soldier to soldier depending on what kind of equipment and skillset they possess.
As for the waist cloaks, while it can be argued that they provide acceptable protection against the nation's highly aggressive weather and frigid winter temperatures, the truth for their inclusions is simply a matter of aesthetic taste. Long flowing clothes and cloaks that can be wrapped around the body are a favoured fashion style within the Empire, as many believe it "Looks really cool", so the trend is carried over into almost every human uniform within almost every branch of the military. Personalisation of the armour meanwhile is not very common, but some soldiers have taken to adding minor customised details to their attires such as unique engravings, painted markings and symbols, extra cloaks or bandages, or any other kind of fashion accessory I can't think off the top of my head right now.
The existence of aesthetic preference does admittedly contrast a tad with the rest of their utilitarian mindset, however it is widely considered a bad idea to criticize or mock Imperial fashion, for many of the Empire's ranks are very fond of their choices of aesthetics, and will likely react with vengeful spite. Just, just don't do it. You do not want to anger anything from the Empire, trust me.
Weapons- State of the art technology is the entire reason the Empire exists in the first place, and ever since its establishment, its gargantuan arsenal of increasingly elaborate tools of war has been only growing and innovating further with each passing year, so of course such powerful inventions have military variations. For starters, seeing as they were the inventors of gunpowder-based weaponry, it stands to reason that the most advanced versions of firearm Engrievion currently has access to see borderline excessive use within the Empire's military. Older flintlock designs such as muskets, blunderbusses, and single-shot pistols are sometimes seen in the field, but more sophisticated, powerful, and efficient designs such as revolvers, lever-action rifles, bolt-action rifles, shotguns, and even machine guns are not only more common in the Empire, but in fact are quite rare outside of it. More close quarter martial weapons such as swords, maces, hammers, axes, spears, lances, flails, and even shields are also commonly used among the more melee inclined members of the army.
However, I believe I just lied to you, because normal guns and normal melee weapons are not the Empire's armoury at its full potential no-no-no, it wouldn't be a hi-tech superpower if they were.
Instead, quite a number of Imperial weapons tend to be multipurpose, as the Empire is very fond of versatility. Most notably, their main hallmark of weapon design is not just the usage of guns, but the creation of what have been lovingly referred to as "Gun-Blades". Every gun in the Empire's arsenal is also a sword, and every sword is also a gun. To elaborate further, every style of sword used by Empire troops, either broadswords, longswords, greatswords, shortswords, or even rapiers, all have their blades grafted into the barrel, chamber, and trigger mechanisms of a revolver style pistol, allowing it to serve as both a sword, and a firearm at the exact same time. This extends into the rest of their types of weaponry. Rifles could have sturdy blades attached to the ends of the barrels, Maces could also be shotguns, throwing knives could be grenades, the list goes on, and on. And of course, this refers to only the gunpowder weapons, I haven't even mentioned that experimental plasma firearms, using the raw energy of the Ignition as projectiles, are also starting to crop up within the Empire's legions. Yeah, you heard me right, this medieval dark fantasy setting has laser guns. And yes, they can be swords too.
Going back onto the rails, in the case of the Imperial Soldiers, all of these options of weaponry are readily available to them, even the experimental laser weapons, it purely comes down to the circumstances of the individual that decides which one they go for. Some are permitted or instructed to bring something to fill up a gap, some have prior training before getting enlisted, some have roles or duties specifically built around a particular piece of equipment, some are still trying to find which combat style works best for them, and some are show-offs that choose based on whatever mood they're in that day, it's the Golem's will that man can decide for himself, so options and variety are always good.
Faction unique features- Once again, highly advanced, magically powered technology is the Empire's call to fame. Granted, it's mostly clockwork based, and lacks any form of air-based travel or non-cumbersome communication, but in comparison to the rest of the nation, which exists in a primarily medieval fantasy state, it's leagues above pretty much all competition. As such, the door to many wonders of an advanced society is wide open to the members of the Imperial army. For starters, thanks to a trade and economy alliance with the Trapper's union, the Empire has healthy access to purified wild magic harvested from the surrounding forests. There's numerous options for magical boosts to their operations, however the Empire is particularly favourable of the substance known as "Serpent Oil", a special magical oil reaped from a species of draconic flora known as "Serpentbloom", which through runic bindings allows most forms of inanimate material to slowly regenerate any and all damage it sustains, effectively making all of the Empire's creations endlessly reusable and borderline indestructible. It saves a lot on repair costs, that's for sure.
On the topic of their creations, human members of the Imperial army are frequently supported and accompanied by the smorgasbord of powerful, clockwork war machines that serve on the frontlines alongside them, whether they be automatous drones, or vehicles piloted by their fellow meat bags. Standard Soldiers specifically are usually acting as boots-on-ground fighters, so most of their interaction with the hulking machines are in supporting fire, security, or some helping hands with the bigger guns, anything further would require them to undergo training into a different specialist role such as Engineer, Crewman, Pilot, or Knight if you count "wearing power armour" as interacting with machines.
Additionally, while I mentioned that communication may be cumbersome, it still vastly outclasses any other method of long distance information sharing the rest of the nation has to offer. Through the usage of large devices known as radios, Empire squadrons can instantly speak with anyone else with access to similar tools over seemingly infinite distances, a technology so revolutionary that it's seen regular use in as many facets of society the Empire can touch, though spatial compactness is still a bit of an issue in the current day. Handling and usage of these devices is largely the responsibility of a special type of soldier called a "Comms Officer", but there's nothing stopping a regular basic soldier from grabbing the speaker and shouting into it if the comms officer is dead-I mean uh, "unavailable".
The Empire's technology is so advanced in fact that it can even be integrated into the human body itself. Cybernetic implants see frequent use in the military particularly, seeing as how a clockwork prosthetic can easily replace a blown off arm, leg, or even organ. Bonding of the Ignition into the human soul however is a rather painful process, so most Soldiers don't go out of their way to replace their limbs. Some do, which is somewhat understandable given that machines tend to be far more powerful than the human body. But frequent, repeating soul bonding rituals are not recommended, as the process is prone to risks of sterilization, mental instability, and even death. So most soldiers tend to just want simple, basic prosthesis to replace an amputated injury, not much further than that. But, some do crave the certainty of steel, and the power is an enticing temptation.
Magical specialty: The vast majority of empire troops don't really use much magic, outside of working with magically powered machines and firing magically powered guns, but even then magic is just a fuel source in those cases. The lads are open to learn to use spellcasting equipment though, magic is a useful tool after all, and anything that can give them an edge in combat is welcome to any member of the military. Access to such tools however is rather limited, with many blueprints to wands and staves either lost in the ruins of the old world, or hogged by the researchers in the Science Guild, and even the ones that are uncovered tend to be unreliable or even unstable. Innate spellcasters are also rather rare in Engrievion, and very few members of the Imperial military are among them. Even if they are discovered, they wouldn't fit the classification of basic soldier due to how valuable and specialized spellcraft can be. So sadly, no, no mages for the standard soldiers. The laser guns are pretty sweet though.
Lore:
Up until 200 hundred years ago, the question of "Who had the most powerful army in Engrievion" never had a definitive answer. The Legion of The Scorpion house came the closest through its sheer scale, skill, and technological prowess, yet the highly adaptive, stubborn cunning of the Fox house, and the divinely blessed might of the Undying Daylight Theocracy often challenged the Scorpion's reputation in a constant back-and-fourth. But through a combination of all these attributes, and with the introduction of the ground-breaking arcane power of The Ignition, the four hooved houses of the Stag, Stallion, Bison and Lamb united under an ironclad alliance, and constructed a military force beyond all other opposition: The Engrievion Empire.
With Engrievion being a place of constant danger and conflict, militaristic doctrine is widely considered to be the primary societal focus of the ruling Empire. Even with all of its other revolutionary advancements in industry, agriculture, infrastructure, economy, and even quality of life, everyone is well aware that warfare, security, and combat is the business that the Empire truly calls its specialty. And as such, their military subsidiaries are vast, with branches fulfilling almost every kind of armed service imaginable, from domestic, urban, industrial and royal security, law enforcement, demolition, naval incursions, and even espionage and contracted assassination. Most relevant here however is their largest branch: the ground based army serving in their frontline war efforts.
The medium assault armoured Soldiers of this Imperial army, while not as common as the enlisted light infantry, as strong as the power armoured knights, or as formidable as their accompanying clockwork machines and drones, remain as the most instantly recognizable figures within the ironclad legions. With their long black cloaks, glimmering armour, and snarky attitude, they've practically become the face of the Imperial Military alongside their automaton counterparts, used in propaganda and celebratory parades as a show of unity between the greatness of the Soldier and the hope of the humble civilian. For at the end of the day, they are humans just like the civvies, just with a bit of battle experience and a fancier uniform. It's just another lucrative job in the eyes of the Imperial public, arguably less dangerous than mining or construction work in some cases, but we're not going to get into that.
Their careers usually begin as the lighter enlisted infantry, with applications accepted from anywhere within the Empire's territory, so long as they prove sufficiently capable and willing to enter into the military business. Most of their initiate training occurs within the infantry class, so once they reach a certain rank and are offered a promotion into the Soldier role, the recruits are usually well adjusted to battle, more than ready to accept the higher status. From there, the majority of their military service is likely to be spent within the Soldier skill set, with later options for more specialized jobs such as engineer, medic, knight or even a commanding officer further down the line, should they perform well enough.
Once the status of soldier is reached however, they become a dangerous force to be reckoned with, even on their own. Through rigorous, highly professional training, many of the Empire's fighters possess combat skills that blow most fighting styles out of the water. Due to the sheer scale of the Imperial forces, there's no predicting what kind of fighting style one may go up against. Some are skilled swordsmen and/or shield bearers, joining the infantry in aggressive close quarters. Some excel in marksmanship, serving as backline riflemen or snipers able to pick of distant targets. But more often than not, they're both, masters of ranged, melee, and unarmed combat, able to study and overpower anything but the strongest, most skilled and experienced combatants. On top of this, Empire troops are often armed with a quick wit, their exceptional education providing impressive tactics and psychological analysis, many of them adopting a trickster style of combat, using a combination of expected skill and unexpected dirty ruses to catch enemies off guard.
Many of their ranks have even employed verbal mockery into their strategies, smack talking and insulting their opponents to intentionally rile them up, targeting sensitive emotional responses to trick enemies into making an exploitable mistake. Quite a number of these jokesters have even mastered the trash-talking technique, so attempting to respond with your own insults is ill-advised unless being absolutely humiliated is your ultimate goal.
Though to be fair, the Empire has managed to stay in power for two centuries largely because of its grand swathing armies, so if you did find yourself challenging its might in the first place, you were already humiliating yourself. There's a reason most outlaw gangs hastily keep their heads down whenever Empire patrols pass them by. Why there's never been another Raider horde within its capital since the Silverwater Incident. Why the swarms of undead have never reached its borders. Why you, yes you, should really watch what you're doing in their territory. Because The Empire is bigger than you, smarter than you, wiser than you. They have never given up a cause of theirs, never believed there was nothing they couldn't overcome, never once gave their grim, shitty world any leeway over them. I don't think they've even lost a war yet. So, should you ever find yourself in the forest nation, always heed the golden rules:
-Watch out for storms
-Cut of a mutant bite
-Stay inside during a new moon
-Outlaws are everywhere.
-And, biggest rule of all:
Don't fuck with the Empire.
Just
Ju-just don't.
Trust me, just don't.
There comes a time in every writer's life where they look at a part of the story they're making and think: "Hmm....No that doesn't work anymore, FIX IT."
So, y'all remember this first entry of the Faction unit series?
Well, the descriptions were too short, and as I developed the concept of the empire further I thought the whole "stag knight" thing wasn't working out. I had envisioned the empire as a mixture of medieval knights and ww1 soldiers, and that older concept didn't really translate it all that well.
So I said fuck it, new version.
Admittedly I really don't like the right foot sticking out of the cloak, but having these done up in different art styles someday should fix that, since I also intend to show them off with different gear like swords and shields, or shotguns, those plasma guns, maybe a flamethrower, and etc.
But regardless, here ya go, new version of the Empire soldier.
