"This isn't what I expected when you said we were going to meet your mom." Betty said softly as she carefully cradled the urn for Nicholas and Nathaniel's mother. The conjoined brothers were seated next to her.
"Yea, hope the story wasn't too long winded fo...", Nicholas said apologetically.
"Don't apologize", Betty interrupted. "This is clearly something that is important to both of you."
"Thanks" Nicholas answered as both brothers smiled at Betty, "I know it took us awhile to realize why you were getting so passive aggressive. I hope thi..."
"Ohmygosh!", Betty blurted. "THAT is why you two always give my mom so much attention! You weren't hitting on her, you saw her as a mother figure!"
Nicholas sheepishly nodded for a moment before admitting, "Yea... Nate and I have wonderful family, but nobody that we ever called 'Mom'".
"I feel like an absolute bitch now", Betty mumbled, "Working to keep you two from her."
"You didn't know", Nicholas assured her, "You're a fantastic person and girlfriend. Nate and I are a little awkward around women, as you've seen, but you've been so helpful and understanding. Especially with the things we have trouble doing."
"Well, when your mom weighs half a ton, you need to make sure you know what everyone is physically capable of and plan things out." Shrugged Betty. "I hope I haven't made you run too much."
"We both love it," answered Nicholas, "Sure we fall every now and then, but you don't hold it against us and are right there to help us back up.
Handing their mothers urn back to the brothers, Betty waited for them to set it down on the other side of them before continuing, "I love how we're opening up to each other like this. Is it okay for me to share with you now?"
"Sure", Nicholas grinned, as Betty snuggled up tight against him.
"I... I know the two of you are separate people", Betty stammered, struggling to find the words to use, "It's just that... my heart sees you as one... combined package... If that makes sense?"
"Kinda?", answered Nicholas, a confused look on both brothers faces.
"Gaaaa, I need to just cut to the chase," Betty admitted in a frustrated tone, "Can I just love both of you? We all know that Nate is just as much a part of this relationship as you are, Nick."
The brothers slowly turned their heads towards each other as much as they could, a wide open mouth grin on their faces. Nicholas gave a small nod to his brother, telling him to be the one answering. Moving his head as close as he could, Nathaniel whispered, "We'd like that a lot".
With his answer, Betty happily leaned around Nicholas and began affectionately kissing Nathaniel.
"She's got some catching up to do with you. I've been getting all the kisses until now." teased Nicholas, playfully nudging his brothers head with his as Betty continued smothering Nathaniel with affection.
After Betty was finished smooching Nathaniel, she laid down and stared at the sky. With Nicholas lovingly stroking her arm, she mused, "I love you both so much... I really wish I could meet your mom and tell her what wonderful sons she has. I wonder what she would think of me? Would she like me?"
With that, a large raindrop landed squarely on Betty's nose.
Startled, Betty bolted upright, blowing the water from her nose and exclaiming, "What the? Rain? How? There's not a cloud in the sky!"
The brothers again got a wide open mouth grin on their faces. "Mom likes you." Nicholas said gleefully wile Nathaniel nodded.
"What?" Betty asked, "The raindrop?"
"Nate and I call them 'Kisses from Mom'." Nicholas explained, "We were going to wait to tell you about that, but looks like she wants us to tell you now."
"Your mom is a ghost? How is th..." Betty's reply was interrupted by another raindrop landing squarely on her nose.
Betty looked to where the brothers had set their mothers urn to complain about her wet nose, only to see it gone. Feeling something snuggled up against her, she looked down to see the urn.
Betty could only look in shock as Nicholas, seeing the urn as well, continued, "She can't talk to us directly, but she can do little things like the raindrops, gusts of wind, and things like that when she wants to. As you've seen, she can move herself around if nobody is looking."
Staring off into the distance, Betty took a moment to come to terms with what she had been told. She was snapped out of her trance when she reached down for the urn, only to find it gone. Startled again, she looked around and found the urn back where it was originally.
"She doesn't do this all the time," Nathaniel assured her, "Most days we don't notice anything from her."
Finally calming down, she gave the urn one last look before turning her attention back to the brothers. "I guess I did ask her what she thought of me," smirked Betty. "I can't be upset that she decided to answer." After a pause, she continued. "This is all going to take a while to get used to... Now that I have your moms approval, lets figure out how I snuggle and smooch two faces at the same time."
With that, Betty grabbed the brothers and pulled them on top of her as she laid back down in the grass. Acting quickly to prevent them from flopping face first onto Betty, Nathaniel braced the two of them with his arm while Nicholas worked his arm around Betty before resting his elbow on the ground. Now in a stable position, the brothers drenched Betty's face with licks and kisses. Betty did her best to kiss and lick back, enjoying being overwhelmed in affection.
Meanwhile, Nicholas and Nathaniel's mother watched them quietly from a distance. Proud of her sons and ecstatic about them finding love.

I love how even fantastical foxes like Nate and Nicholas can have such sweet heartwarming moments with their love.
I have actually put some thought into that.
The brothers are very pragmatic in both their actions and in language. That's to be expected when each of them has spent their entire life sharing a body with another person. They'll refer to themselves in both the singular and plural, switching to whichever creates the least confusion. When it comes to being a boyfriend/husband/father, the singular form is what they would use.
As for their children, The brothers Dicephalic condition is probably not something that I would have be passed on to their offspring. Other aspects could be passed on, including equine attributes from Betty's mother, Vicki.
