I went to Anthro Weekend Utah (AWU) this year and ran into someone selling fountain pens, ink samplers, and notebooks designed for use with fountain pens. I was kind of amazed how much time I spent talking with them about the pens and the science behind them. They even had some dip pens for sale, but sadly the handle style and tip I wanted weren't available together.
The lower pen I purchased from them. It's not a high-end one, but it's a good starter model. The upper one, well, that's an interesting story. The vendor held a panel on fountain pens and during the course of it, everyone there got to assemble their own pen as we learned about how they work. Y'know, given how old fountain pen/dip pen technology is, the science behind it all is just, wow.
There's an addictive feeling to writing with them too. The scratch scratch scratch of the nib on the paper I find is really relaxing. The addiction is actually helping me write again (massive writer's block lately), and helping me push through the mental obstacles I've been having lately with respect to being creative.
It's a slow process, but I'm working on it.

I like the Parker fountain pens personally. Around December I find them at an office supply store I go to. The cheap solution to the ink is to buy in bulk; get a syringe and needle to refill the cartridges. Then you need latex gloves and paper on the table, it can be messy and stain your hands for a few days.
The ink in those sample bottles up there cleans up pretty well. I had a small spill with one of them on my hands, and they were clean within a day or two (thankfully).
There's going to be a lot of transcribing for me at some point, that's for sure :) I went to the website for the vendor to see about that glass dip pen, but sadly the site appears to be down.
(scampers over there, looks at the photo, EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! (swoon))
Oh, what beautiful pens! I dearly love fountain pens and dip pens, though I admit that sometimes mine were just a bear to get going. I have a number of them around that are unused since I've moved to digital.
...note that I'm not giving them up, though. I have two Mont Blancs.

I found a pair of Mont Blancs from the 50's that belonged to Gloria's grandfather, but now I have to find them again. They're in a leather holder and I thought they were in the sock drawer... ooookkkkkkk... I'll find them.

I just picked up a Lamy Safari this weekend. Sadly, the converter I got didn't fit, so I'll have to go back at some point. But it came with a cartridge, so I can at least use it. And oooooooh...I haven't felt that kind of writing-related endorphin rush for YEARS :D
