By the 1980s, Victor felt secure enough in his plans that he could let loose a little.
He had factories under construction on every continent. The bribed officials didn't care where the money came from, and never questioned why the parts they churned out made no economic sense. It was beyond their ability to understand that even they were merely cogs in a greater machine.
Meanwhile, the ferret hadn't been born yet and the wombat was still in the pouch. They wouldn't dare come back for him here and now. They would try to nab him at an earlier time, when he was vulnerable, when he wouldn't be missed.
He knew this, because his previous variants had left some invaluable records of these encounters. The fact that he was here and now proved that they had failed, and would always fail. And no wonder: how could they get the better of the world's greatest predator?
Still, there was always the risk that they might get desperate. One more "jump" and he would be unstoppable. Future generations—if there were any—might very well grow to curse his name. But in the meantime, what better defense was there than to make himself loved?
And what better way to make himself loved than to become a rockstar?
---
Note: There's an oddly genuine-looking old west sheriff's badge on his outfit. I wonder where he got it from?
(Resubmitted because the previous version lacked the artist's watermark.)
