I pity Ruto, in some levels. She was just a lonely kid who ended up finding a (at the time) kindred child to play with and even promised to each other (though of course, Link doesn't talk and Ruto likely didn't fully understand what she was doing when she gave away the Zora's saphire to Link), only to have to let it all go during the adult timeline because this is an adventure game and romance has no purchase in it.
This is a children's game, of course, and I acknowledge that. But I still think Nintendo's unwillingness to write proper relationships and character development just to maintain everthing in the open at any time to be kind of a disservice to people who enjoy the stories their games tell.
At least this means there's no canon, so I can make up whatever I want.

I always liked that she kept a place in her heart for Link all that time. If he had a chance to grow up I wonder if he could have loved her back. Twilight Princess suggests he died without passing on his hero’s art, maybe he married someone he couldn’t have kids with. Or maybe it was always doomed since a princess can’t marry a nobody from the forest. I love all the possibilities but yeah, I felt nad for Ruto too. She’s more than comic relief.
