A brief sizzle and pop brought a biting sweet smell like sulfur covered in honey before the cloven hoofed demon materialized in a slice of green and black flame. He smiled as he made his way through the pumpkin patch, already seeing some vines rustling and hearing the sleepy chitters coming from the rows of vegetation. They had grown even quicker than expected, not that he could blame them for being restless; poor things hadn't had a proper night out in so long it was long overdue.
He found a clear spot with a convenient stump and whistled a few notes that repeated into a haunting roundelay and spread over the rows of adolescent gourds. It didn't take long before a Peeper peered shyly from behind one of the mundane pumpkins that served as perfect camouflage for his precious sproutlings. No sooner had he lowered a hand attempting to coax the shy one out he heard an ecstatic squeal, "Eeeen!" The closest they could manage to saying his name. He looked to his right just as a sprouted Vandal came rushing in an adorable clumsy run and hung on his tail like a child on monkey bars. Zaveen couldn't help a grin at the gurgling laughter bubbling out of the rambunctious sprout as it swung back and forth on his bobbing tail, struggling a bit to keep its grip with the still forming leafy hands.
Emboldened by the scene, the Tattler ducked behind its hiding place for a moment before reappearing with a late bloomer cradled in the braided vines that formed its arms. Zaveen could tell it was a Glutton by the much larger mouth stuck in a wide grin, but somehow had missed the spark of life that would have started the growth of its husk and vines that would have formed into a functioning body. The Peeper set the Glutton head down with an anxious little dance stamping its feet in place. "Eebee, Eeen, Ivivi!" The Peeper looked back and forth at Zaveen and the Glutton head. The Glutton yelped in protest as the Peeper rolled it over to show nothing sprouting underneath the pumpkin head.
"Aww, look at you poor thing..." Peeper darted behind Zaveen's stump as he leaned over to pick up the Glutton head. The limbless gourd instinctively nipped and suckled on Zaveen's fingertip as he was plucked from the ground. "Haha, always hungry aren't you?" The pumpkin babbled contentedly around the mouthful of finger. Zaveen could hear more activity as the ominous whistling built into a chorus and more of his malignant toddlers were rousing from their slumber. He eyed the moon for a moment, "Bah why not, a little early but a treat won't hurt hmm?" Like a doting father he tickled the Glutton's cheek before shifting his weight a bit on the stump and lifted his tail getting another laughing squeal from the Vandal, swinging on his tail like a pendulum now.
A green mist formed in swirling tendrils as Zaveen worked his fingers in apparently meaningless sign language. A glow gradually got brighter within the mist as he continued and the mist began to spread like nebulous fingers, searching out the roused Goblin Gourds and filling them with a bounty of malicious nutrition. The Glutton began to levitate above Zaveen's hand, working its mouth trying to chomp the misty tentacles swirling around its base until green and black flames flared from its eyes. Zaveen could hear happy chants of his name from the dark pumpkin patch, blending harmoniously with the whistling melody as brief flashes of green and yellow sparked through the field of gourds. Vandal dropped from Zaveen's tail and beat its newly hardened torso shell like a little green Tarzan.
"Ha ha, just a little more and you'll be perfectly ripe!" Zaveen could hear Peeper from behind his stump, "Ooooh- Loobee!" Zaveen looked where it was pointing with its new fingers where a hole even darker than the night sky was opening just beyond the fenced portion of his crop. "Right on time, it's gonna be a good year babies!" He stood from the stump and raised both his hands as Glutton began working out its new shaky legs, pulling Peeper from behind the stump by the hand and darting back among the mundane pumpkins.
As soon as the moonlight fully shone on Zaveen the green misty tendrils condensed into a glowing ball and spread in a dome over the entire field. As the darker than dark circle pulsed and a glowing border could be seen giving the darkness a spiral shape, a multitude of voices ranging from high squeaks to rumbling baritones rose up to the inky heavens, "Eeeeeeennnnn!!"
