Silence, all through the house as the early morning's rays shone through parted blinds of a window. The beams settled on the form of a couple resting on a couch, arms wrapped around one another as they slept. They turned over, still in each other's grasp, but one was stirring, kicking a tossing lightly as muttered words escaped her lips. Repeating, anxiously, frightened, saddened, she whimpered words of a bad memory and of deep fears. "N-non... je ne veux pas y retourner... s'il te plaît... pas vers eux...(N-no...I don't want to go back...please...not to them...)" She muttered groggily, a vixen clutching tightly to her boyfriend, a coywolf, still sound asleep. The muffled words continued as she shook her head from side to side in her sleep, pleas for someone to hold onto her, not to let her go. "...s'il te plaît, ne... ne me laisse pas avec eux...quelqu'un!(...please don't...don't leave me with them...s-someone!)" Her words grew in volume as her tossing became more agitated. Her boyfriend started to stir, blinking away his sleep as he was startled at his girlfriend's panic. "Claire?! Claire! No no no, babe, please wake up, c'mon, honey, please!"
Her eyes snapped open, wide with shock, struggling to pull herself into the moment and let go of the negative feelings she'd had in her sleep. She craned her neck to look up at her boyfriend as he looked into her eyes, his words distant as tears formed at the edges of her vision. "Claire, baby, please, I'm here. My sunshine, please, wh-" He was cut off as she turned, burying her face into his chest, sobbing. He held her close as she cried, rubbing her back and shushing her, kissing her head as he whispered reassurances in her ears. "Shh shh shh, hey, hey, I'm here, hon', I'm here. I'm not leaving you, I'll never leave you or let you go. It's okay, let it out, Claire..."
She continued to cry for a bit as her boyfriend comforted her, her tears beginning to dry as wet streaks lined her face. She looked up and was surprised when a finger wiped away the last tear from her face. "Cal..." She gazed at him with saddened eyes, reaching her arms below his and hooking her fingers over his shoulders. "Cal, I...I had a bad dream...it was...it was about my parents...my birth parents..." Achilles, "Cal," looked at Claire with concerned but curious eyes. She'd never told him about her birth parents, changing the subject any time she nearly said anything about them or any time it drifted to the topic. "Claire, I...I know it must hurt, but, I want you to tell me about them. Please, honey?" Claire's expression soured, but she sighed swinging her legs over the couch, Achilles following suit as he sat against her, the two leaning back on the couch. "I guess it's time I told you about them then..."
"I was born into an unloving household, it was...horrible. They abused me, mentally, emotionally...they beat me...They were too wrapped up in their own problems, finding me as one of them too, and no matter what I did I was always told I was a burden. There was always alcohol in the household, they were drunks and bullies, they locked me out several times while they got wasted, leaving me in the cold all alone. So one day I finally had enough, walked out with only the clothes on my back, and...that's when I met them." Claire's sour look turned a bit warm for a second. "Björn and Calysta...your adopted parents." Achilles looked at Claire, seeing an upturn to her lips at their names. "Yes, the two of them were camping when I wandered into them, after what felt like hundreds of miles they took me in, Calysta coming to me to wrap me in a blanket. I could only imagine how I looked then. Tired, cold, hungry...defeated. Björn was furious after I told them of my family and their treatment of me, and so they decided then to take me in. They became...they are my real parents..." Claire looked a bit happier for a minute as she paused, Achilles wrapping an arm around her shoulder as she took a moment to reflect.
"Though trouble came around when they wanted to make my adoption official, my birth family didn't want to let me go so easily, but in the end they lost. Evidence of neglect and abuse, was all it took, but there was more, much more than I knew. They weren't just drunkards but junkies as well. I, I don't want to imagine what they would've done for a fix if they ran out of stuff to sell... But thankfully Björn and Calysta won and I became a part of their family, their daughter. Though my birth family tried to weasel their way back into my life, going to great lengths to try and get me to go back to them, lies to get me to go back, but I told them off with some unkind words. That's when we moved out here, living quietly and comfortably with no chance of them ever appearing again..." Claire looked happier as she let it all out.
"Well, I had to catch up on my schooling for a bit, having been unable to thanks to the junkies. Mom and dad even helped me to get a job so I could stand on my own after awhile, working at a chic fashion store that specialized in unique styles, like a biker aesthetic being one. You know mom and dad ride, sometimes taking me to see the road and all the places along their routes." Claire's smile grew and she turned to face Achilles, gazing into his eyes, the two knowing what came next. "And then that's when I met the love of my life. You. I remember seeing you sitting there at that diner table all alone, but, something about you sparked something in me, and I'm so glad it did." Achilles remembered seeing her for the first time, riding into the lot, taking off her helmet, and stepping into the diner. It was love at first sight to him, a burning feeling in his very being that told him he'd seen the one for him.
"Cal, I...I feel like a weight has been lifted from my chest, from my heart. Telling you all this, I...thank you..." Claire turned to let her mind wander as she looked away. "Cal...I was worried for a bit there...worried you'd not like me for where I came from, from who I came from. But I'm n-" Achilles lifted Claire to sit on his lap as he took her hand into his own. "Claire...from the second I saw you I knew there was something about you that I just couldn't look away from. I know you're as beautiful on the inside as you are outside, and you opening it to me about something so sad about yourself isn't something that would chase me off. You aren't them, Claire, you're more than they could ever be. You're the love of my life, hon', you know that. I could say it a million times but it'd never lose meaning. I. Love. You. Nothing's going to change that, my love." Claire and Achilles pulled each other close in an embrace, hearts beating as they sat in silence.
"Cal, I...I love you too."
