A soft, cool sensation spread across The Dark Urge's forehead, and his eyes opened with a start.
"Oh, did I wake you up? For a given value of wake, anyways. Sorry about that, handsome."
The voice sounded young, and red eyes flicked up to see amber eyes looking back at him, peering out of from a dark blue hood while a glowing hand rested on his head.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"Me? I'm Hayashi. Or Forest. Same thing, really." The...wolf? Werewolf? answered with a shrug. There probably was knowledge of wolf people somewhere knocking around in his head, but damned if The Dark Urge could recall that instant past that light fog in his mind.
The Dark Urge's eyes darted around as he registered that he was lying with his head on the strange young man's leg. Rather than his bedroll at camp, he was lying underneath some great big tree, and to his side came a shimmering glow of light and the flow of running water. Nobody else was around. And before he even voiced his next question, the wolf answered as if reading his mind.
"If you haven't figured it out yet, this is a dream of sorts where my mind is connecting with yours. Bit of Territory Creation to filter out those dreams of blood and guts you've been having while I try a bit of my healing magic behind the scenes. Not that it's any better than a bard or paladin's so I can't make the tadpole go away, but you were so badly off when I first found you that I figured I may as well try something."
The Dark Urge's back stiffened at the mention and his eyes furrowed. "You know what happened to me? Who am I then? How did I end up on that mind flayer ship?"
Hayashi's mouth curled into a wry smile as he sighed. "Yes and no, it's a weird story. I came with...I'll just say friend for now for the barest minimum. But anyways, we were sent here to help guide some fates and solve a plot of some sort. We aren't from this world, so we needed an anchor of some kind connected to what's happening, and I happened to find you first in all the darkness calling out."
The wolf paused as he looked away for a second. "...you were calling for help. And yelling some of the angriest curses I've heard in a while, but calling at any rate."
The Dark Urge pushed himself up and turned to look at Hayashi, who pulled his hand back and leaned against the tree to look at the glowing river. The white dragonborn's eyes narrowed as he regarded the hooded stranger for a moment, then asked, "Why are you helping me? Are you some illusion the tadpole sent?"
Hayashi laughed a bit, pulling up his legs before meeting The Dark Urge's red gaze with his own. "Would you believe me if I said your smooth voice and your handsome good looks?" he asked back. The response hung in the air a moment before Hayashi looked away again. "I came after that tadpole was put in you, but no, I'm not a part of it. You were in such bad shape that I hid myself in your soul and focused on trying to keeping you alive. And yeah, I first came here agreeing to do all this because I'm trying to make one of my own goals come true, but now... I'm also helping you because I want to."
The Dark Urge crossed his arms as he sat there, thoughts running through his head as he mulled the wolf's answer over. There was a sympathetic light to his eyes, a shine of commiseration of sorts. "Go on," he prompted.
"I can hear your thoughts over here, and I've heard about how worried you are with all those bloodthirsty, murdery thoughts that keep coming to you. I haven't gone quite as far as you, but I've had some dark thoughts come to me that I'd rather not have seen. The desire to beat someone to a bloody, unrecognizable pulp and the vicious enjoyment of it. Then the sense of feeling like a monster for something beyond your control," Hayashi said as he pulled his hood up to reveal some horns. "It sucks. But...it's something you can get through. And I want to help you get there for you and for myself. I'm here as a Servant, making what looks impossible possible is in the job description," he said jokingly.
The Dark Urge cocked his head at that, letting the sounds of running water fill the air again before his shoulders relaxed. "Thank you. What can you do?"
"Heh. Servant. My class is Caster, Assassin, Archer if you want to stretch it a bit, and in the eyes of this world...a Foreigner. I've been working a minor miracle to heal that horrible wound you had with my level of skill, but beyond that? If I can tune myself to you a bit more, I can materialize myself out there and help you out more directly with your adventuring. I'm closest to being a thief or bard if I factor in my magic abilities. But for now? I'm trying to fix up whatever I can of your brain and keep the violent murderhobo thoughts at bay. Frankly, I probably won't get you anywhere with the former but I can soak up some of the latter. And whatever happens, my being here means it's possible for you to get through all of this okay."
A heaviness started to weigh on the dragonborn's eyelids. The Dark Urge tried to keep them open, but Hayashi seemed to catch on immediately as laid his leg back down and patted on it invitingly. "I've been going on too long, haven't I? Well, we can always talk again later. Come on, get some rest. You've got another day to go through tomorrow."
A brief hesitation stopped The Dark Urge, but ultimately he decided to take up the wolf's offer. "Maybe if you're lucky, Enzo will have attuned with Tav enough to manifest himself too to help you guys," he said cheekily as he put his hand back on the dragonborn's head. The cool, soothing sensation came back again as the hand glowed, followed by the weight of sleep rapidly overtaking his body. He wanted to ask one more question, but already his tongue was relaxing. And just before his eyes closed again to fall into a quiet warmth, he heard one last thing.
"Sweet dreams, handsome."

Behold the crazy that has gotten into my head the past few months. I always figured I'd try to avoid doing any self-inserts like this but HERE WE ARE NOW. Anyways, I got this piece done by cbh recently and it's amazingly done! She's an amazing artist to work with and she's currently open for commissions. If you're looking for a more fantasy themed thing in particular, she's a good artist to look into! Check out her stuff if you like.
