Dipper's Not-So-Pleasant Christmas Surprise
Apparently, Santa felt it necessary to remind Dipper he wasn't completely good all year and filled his stocking with coal.
But Santa also wanted to let him know that he wasn't completely naughty either, and left some presents in the good hands of his uncle, Stargazer.

Hey! That coal will be good on the fire!
Kids--act bad! We need the coal!

Honestly, though, that was the idea. No, you weren't good enough for a toy, but you at least deserve to stay warm.
I've always wondered how Santa judges everything, because it says in the Bible:
For all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23).
So by that basis, everybody should be getting coal. However, Santa probably doesn't see it the same way Jesus does.

Maybe Santa keeps a running tally, then.
One thing is for certain: Jesus also forgives and forgets; His death on the cross and resurrection ensures He has paid for all sins, past, present, and future.

Poor Dipper, actually there is a candy coal you can get OF course as others have said coal can be useful.
Being in West Virginia coal isn't that hard to find though
