The Gift of True Love
Friday, November 17th
Today seems like a normal day for the average person, but this day was different for Kevin. Because on this day, it was a special day for him and his boyfriend, Tyler. They had been looking forward to this day for a long time since the day they announced their relationship, and that day was finally here!
As the sunlight entered through the window to their bedroom, this woke up the bear. Getting out of bed, he let out a huge yawn before walking to the bathroom to brush his teeth and take a shower. As he did his thing, he was thinking about how excited he was to celebrate his anniversary with Tyler. Now that he had the whole house to himself, he was able to take this to his advantage. While Tyler was at work, Kevin was going to pretend that he did not know of their special day so that he would have a surprise waiting for his lover.
For a long time, Kevin knew that he had to make this surprise for their anniversary work since Tyler was working full-time at a fancy restaurant about a few miles away from their house.
Kevin went to the kitchen and prepared the coffee as he turned on the coffee maker. But right in the middle of it, his phone rang. It was Tyler. He picked it up and hoped that he didn’t ask Kevin about the day’s events.
“Hey sugar bun, hope everything’s good at work.” Kevin said nervously.
“Hey, Kevin! And yeah, things are ok. We just finished performing, so we’re taking a break. I don’t know why it’s so packed at the restaurant every morning apart from dinnertime.” Tyler explained as he took a sip from his water bottle.
“Ah, well, maybe it’s because of the popular breakfast items over at the restaurant.
“Wow, really? How do you know that?” Tyler asked in surprise.
“Oh, well, I’ve been over there at the same restaurant before and I won’t even forget the days I went there for breakfast and dinner. It’s been packed with so many people the last time I went there.” Kevin explained.
“Ah, well they say this place is one of the most popular restaurants in the city. The oldest, but still standing today.” Tyler said. “So uh, didn’t you say you had work today?”
Even though this was Kevin’s day off, he didn’t expect Tyler to ask him whether he had work or not. To not blow the surprise, he made up a lie saying he was getting ready to go to work.
“Yeah, they needed extra help at the office, so I’m already beginning to go to work. Just that I’m making a coffee.” Kevin said as he poured the water onto the ground coffee in the filter, flowing through it and into the mug.
“Alright then, I’ll see you tonight then. We’ll be getting ready to perform again soon.” Tyler said
“Alright Tyler, see you later.” Kevin then hung up the phone and breathed a sigh of relief.
Because Tyler asked Kevin whether or not he had work today, he had to pretend he was going to work when in reality, he was having his day off because he didn’t want to blow the surprise that he was planning for months. Kevin had also saved up a lot of money because he wanted things to go special and perfectly fine.
As he sat down and drank his coffee, he remembered that there was a florist shop not too far from the apartment and Kevin could get some flowers for his lover for a decent price. About five dollars to be exact. He knew that Tyler’s favorite flowers were red roses, so that was the first gift that he had to get for Tyler. Not only that, he also needed to go to the grocery store since he wanted to make sushi for him and Tyler. The good thing was that Kevin and Tyler happened to have a rice cooker, so it would make things a whole lot easier.
Kevin had now finished his coffee and went to put his mug in the sink. He was now on a mission to make their anniversary a special surprise as he put his sweater on and left the apartment with his keys. Kevin walked to his car and drove to the nearest florist shop to find the bouquet of red roses. Once he found them, he purchased the flowers and then went back to his car to drive to the grocery store to find a box of chocolates and everything he needed to make the sushi. He had to make sure to go to a Japanese supermarket so he could get the exact ingredients sushi grade.
What consisted of Kevin’s shopping list was Japanese sushi rice, a few sheets of Nori, three avocados, two bottles of rice wine vinegar, cucumbers, wasabi paste, and 10 ounces of smoked salmon. The employees at the Japanese supermarket Kevin went to were super friendly and helped him out with getting everything to make the sushi. In fact, since Kevin explained to them about their anniversary with Tyler, they wanted to top it off by giving him a box of Japanese chocolates.
“Is this everything?” The cashier said.
“Yes ma’am, I’m gonna make sure that my anniversary with my boyfriend is extra special today.” Kevin said.
“Oh yeah, I saw what was going on. Does he know about it?” The cashier asked.
“No, I didn’t want to spoil it, so I have to keep it a secret until he gets home. Cause once he’s back from work, he’s gonna walk home to a special surprise waiting for him.” Explained Kevin.
“Awww, that’s so sweet! I really hope it goes well and lovely!” The cashier said as she was supporting Kevin’s plan to make the surprise very special.
“Thank you so much! I can’t wait for his reaction once he’s back!” Kevin said as he inserted his credit card into the card reader.
Meanwhile back at the Restaurant….
Tyler was on his lunch break with the rest of the group and as they ate, he couldn’t take a bite of his food as he was now feeling worried that Kevin had forgotten about their anniversary.
“Is everything ok, Tyler? Ya seem anxious.” Charlie asked him.
“I have this bad feeling that my boyfriend forgot our anniversary. See, we’ve been in a relationship for about a year and today is our first anniversary together. He told me that he had work today, but he might be so busy right now that his priorities are pushing it away from his mind.” Tyler explains.
“Ah, I see, Did he know about it before?” Charlie asked.
“Well, he did know about it before today, but now it changed all of a sudden. He didn’t even wish me a happy anniversary over the phone this morning for some odd reason.” Tyler said, reluctantly taking a bite of his steak.
“Well listen, son. I don’t think he forgot, he might’ve had his reasons for it and it might not be in a way you might think. Some partners in relationships don’t even care about special occasions like these and it can take a toll on their relationship or their marriage to the point where everything just falls apart and turns into a mess. But the way I see it, if a partner doesn’t say anything about the anniversary, it’s not that they don’t care about it. They may not want to spoil the surprise until the right moment because it’s something that they have planned for a long time and they just want it to go very well without any issues.” Charlie explained to Tyler.
“Well, what does that have to do with this anyway?” Tyler asked.
“All I’m saying is that he’s not trying to forget, he just has something special in store for you.” Charlie said.
“Whatever my boyfriend had planned for me, I’d appreciate it, but I don’t know about that. It’s already bad enough that I’m feeling anxious about the situation.” Said Tyler.
“At least ya can try to take my word for it, bud. I’m hoping he didn’t forget cause this is a special day and I’m sure it matters to you and him. Try to stay positive the best you can. Charlie said.
“I guess so…” Tyler sighed.
Back at the apartment….
Kevin had just got home from the store with all of the gifts he bought for Tyler and the ingredients for the salmon roll sushi he was making for dinner. Since he had a lot of money to burn and was able to afford it, Kevin was also planning to take Tyler out for a movie tomorrow and a concert on Sunday. Of course, it was a huge investment in all of this, but Kevin was saving up a lot of money from work at the time and he wanted their first anniversary to be memorable.
After putting the gifts in their room, Kevin went back to the kitchen and got to work on making the Sushi. Since he was making this, he knew he couldn’t forget about the chopsticks and soy sauce, so he also got that. Kevin was an expert at making Sushi, ever since he went to Japan back in college for a trip since he had a friend living in Tokyo who showed him the ropes about Japanese culture and cuisine. That’s what got him interested in learning about different cultures so that he could also learn how to make foods from those cultures.
“Tyler is going to love the sushi that I made when he comes home! I’ve got lots of stuff in store for him!” Kevin said to himself as he was soaking the rice.
After 4 hours later, Kevin drained the water and cooked it in the rice cooker with about 2 cups of water.
2 Hours Later….
Tyler was in the car, driving back to the apartment. Feeling like Kevin forgot about their anniversary, he was sad about this. He had never felt hurt like this before and he didn’t want everyone back at the restaurant to see that he was sad.
“So much for our first anniversary together….” Tyler said as he stopped at a red light.
He wanted to call Kevin up and check on him, but Tyler was too sad to even do anything. Tyler had to pull over because he felt like crying and he did, for a little while. He wanted to lash out at Kevin for intentionally forgetting their anniversary, but that would just be too much. All he could think about was that even if he did go through a lot at work, he would still try to make time for Tyler. Now that he was back on the road, he tried to think of anything positive to get it off of his mind.
Back at the apartment, Kevin was now finished making and preparing the sushi. In his mind, he felt that this was going to be the best start to their weekend together as it would be filled with nothing but lots of love and companionship. Just as he was about to go to the living room, he saw Tyler’s car parked outside.
“This is the moment where I surprise him now!” Kevin said to himself as he rushed to get the gifts from their room.
Outside the door, Tyler was fumbling with his keys as he was trying to unlock the door to the apartment. He didn’t want anyone to see that he was sad, so he had to be swift to get to the third floor.
“My boyfriend forgets about our anniversary, why do I even care? This day sucked.” Tyler said.
Once he unlocked the door, he noticed that the lights were off and he used his flashlight to look for the light switch. Once he did turn on the lights, he got a surprise he was never expecting.
“SURPRISE!!!!! Happy Anniversary, Tyler!” Kevin shouted, drawing the attention of Tyler who was now shocked.
“Kevin….. You remembered! I was so afraid you forgot 'cause you were at work and I thought it would go bad.” Tyler cried on Kevin’s shoulder as he hugged his boyfriend.
“Shhh…. It’s ok, Tyler. I didn’t forget, I told my boss about this in advance, so I got the day off and I was saving a lot of money to make this perfect.” Kevin comforted Tyler as he rubbed his ears. “I got you a few gifts, I’ll go bring them.”
Kevin went to the kitchen and returned with the bouquet of roses, the box of chocolates, and a box covered in wrapping paper. Tyler was stunned to see this as he felt like his day had gone from bad to good.
“Are they for me?” Tyler asked.
“Yeah! I got these chocolates at the Japanese market, they were imported from Japan!” Kevin gave the flowers and the chocolates to Tyler. He shed a tear knowing that this was the best surprise of his life.
“Aw, thank you!” Tyler said.
“And that’s not all, there’s another gift for you!” Said Kevin, giving Tyler the box.
Eager to know what was inside, Tyler tore up the wrapping paper and when he opened the box, he was even more shocked with what he saw. Two tickets to see Mariah Carey live on Sunday and a $50 gift card.
“Oh my god, a gift card and concert tickets! You’ve got me infected with that damn Christmas song.” Tyler said.
“Wait what?” Kevin was dumbfounded.
Tyler laughed, knowing that he was playing a joke on Kevin. Because All I Want For Christmas was so popular and annoying to some people, Tyler knew he might as well just pull this on Kevin.
“Heh, can’t get enough of Mariah Carey?” Asked Kevin.
“I mean, I know the song might be annoying, but that’s the best feel-good song of the holiday season!” Kevin said.
“I agree, and we both know it! Come with me, I made dinner.” Kevin smiled, holding Tyler's hand as they went to the kitchen.
“Oooh, what are we eating tonight? I’m starving!” Tyler licked his lips.
“Ta-da! Doesn’t it take you back to our college days?” Kevin said.
“Salmon rolls? You’re a master at cooking! My compliments to the chef, aka you.” Tyler said.
“Heh, it was nothing. I’m glad we’re together after a year of love and joy.” Said Kevin as he popped the champagne and poured it into their wine glasses.
With everything put in place, Kevin put on some romantic music on the radio and the two sat down at the dinner table to start eating their sushi dinner after they got a few salmon sushi rolls. Tyler was the first to try it soon after dipping it in soy sauce and after taking a bite of the first roll, he was enjoying it.
“Do you like the sushi?” Kevin asked.
“Oh, I don’t like the sushi, Kevin. I love it, the best I have ever tried!” Tyler said.
“Heh, my cute boyfriend loves his fishy dinner.” Smiled Kevin.
“Well, you love sushi too, silly!” Tyler giggled.
“That is true, my love. I’m glad you love the dinner I made for our anniversary. Said Kevin.
And so, Kevin and Tyler continued to eat their sushi as they enjoyed the rest of their night together. Now that it was finally their first anniversary, the pair was very glad that they’d made it after a year.
Once Saturday and Sunday came, Kevin and Tyler spent the rest of their anniversary together all weekend long with lots of activities together. Kevin was able to take Tyler out to the movies and the Mariah Carey concert. Tyler on the other hand treated his boyfriend to some video games once they made a trip to the game store so they could get some retro games. Besides the video games, they also had a spa date and enjoyed every minute of their weekend. Here’s to more years of happiness and love for Kevin and Tyler!
The End.
