GR-2 is the Humanoid Robot BF created to face Giant Robo as the 14th Kaiju in the 16th Episode of the series, "Monster Robot GR-2".
Appearance: Created by Dr. Snake, GR-2 was the Counterpart of Giant Robo – Indeed, its serial is Giant Robo 2 – showing an almost identical body design and shape, with Rocket Boosters on the back; with the major differences been it sport a dull monochromatic metallic color and a different head shape, which sport a mouth plate and horns, rather than the more visible human face with the pharaoh like helmet of Robo's head design. Interestingly, when GR-2 fired its horn missile, the robot had an near resemblance to another of Mitsuteru Yokoyama creations – Tetsujin 28.
Since it was build to share a design somewhat close Giant Robo, we must assume that Dr. Snake created GR-2 with the surviving original plans of Giant Robo by Dr. Garzia. GR-2 would not be the only Robot to be build with Robo's similar design specifications, and would later return to phase Robo once more in Ep.19.
GR-2's roar is similar to that of Gorgo's Roar, though it does this briefly.
Abilities: It was built to surpass Robo in every way, the horns on GR-2's head could be use to ram or fend off, but as well these were fired as a guiding Projectile and was capable of replenish them; its hull, much like Robo, was impervious to projectiles. Surprisingly tho, despite sporting Rockets booster, GR-2 never flew and oddly enough traveled under the ground, it arrivals marked by an Earthquake. One of its arms is able to be fired Rocket Punch style. GR-2 was also able to emit a jamming signal that cut off all communications.
Like Giant Robo, GR-2 was operated by a portable Command Set, though this one was big with TV screen and only its Creator, Dr. Snake, was the sole operator.
Weaknesses: Despite been as strong as the Original Robo, GR-2, much like Robo, would become inoperable if the Control Device or its master were taken out, which is what happened to it and Dr. Snake in the end. Also, the Command Unit had a range limit, which forced BF to take over the Radar Surveillances Communications Station of Unicorn to command the Robot at a safe distance.
_History_
After making its usual schedule report to NY HQ, the Swiss Branch of Unicorn comes under attack by BF's new agent, Dr. Snake and its newest robot creation. Subsequent attacks followed, leveling the branches of Rome, Cairo, Dubai Singapore and Hong Kong; The Investigation into these seem that each time before the attacking the Local Unicorn Branches, is was preceded by the lose of their Radar Stations – isolating them from lookouts or means to call for help. When Mari informs that a similar situation has now befallen on the Taiwan Branch, Azuma concludes Tokyo's branch is next and readies for the impending attack by protecting their Radar Surveillance Bureau, when two individuals are spotted at the entrance. Fortunately, these ended up been two siblings and the children of Mr. Tsuboyama, the director of the Radar Surveillance Bureau, seeking their father as their mother has fallen ill and taken to Narita Hospital.
Minami and Daisaku decided to help by keeping an eye on the Radar Station in Tsuboyama's stead while he see his wife; Unbeknownst to all, this was a ploy by Dr. Snake to get the Radar Director for his real purpose, and holding his wife – who he dozed with a strong sedative - and his kids hostages to ensure his compliance. Later that night, the Radar Station is jammed and comes under siege by BF's Giant Robot, GR-2; As Daisaku calls for Giant Robo, the guards tried to fend off the Robot with bazooka projectiles to no avail, but Robo arrives on time and faces off GR-2, plunging onto it with a kick.
The two metal giants face off, but are in almost equal footing to each other's power – GR-2 fires its Horn Missile, but Robo avoids, it then fires a barrage of Finger Rockets onto the evil Mecha who disappears in the in the cloud of smoke, with no trace left behind. Minami and Daisaku head back to Tokyo to report the situation to Azuma: Minami is order to return to the station, while Daisaku stay behind in case of an attack. However, Dr. Snake makes his move, incapacitates the crew of the Radar and seizes Station with the help of an extorted Tsuboyama, and the Control Unit of GR-2 is installed, using the Surveillance Communications as an extension to control the Robot. Not long after Minami arrives and is captured; he then tied along with the Radar crew, exposed to the cold of the mountain elements.
In the Meantime, Daisaku along with Mari, pay a visit to Tsuboyamas at the hospital, but the boy asks them to leave and saying "Su Pleh", which confuses the two at first and leave, but on the way out, Mari comes to realize the boy deliberately said "Help Us" backwards. The two launch a surprise attack on the BF agents and free the Tsuboyamas from captivity and inform them of the occurring at the Radar Station. To make matters worst at that moment, GR-2 breaks through the ground in the middle of the city and launches its surprise attack on Tokyo and its Unicorn HQ. Robo arrives on time to battle its evil counterpart, but this time, GR-2 is able to fend off Robo with ease. Knowing that much like Robo, GR-2 has its own command unit.
At the Radar Station, Mr. Tsuboyama, unable to stomach more of his unwilling participation, he walks outside with a BF guard in tow when he sees his friends tied, and playing dead; as they walk, Minami springs into action and topples the guard, allowing Tsuboyama to take his gun and release his colleagues. He calls for Daisaku, then he and Tsuboyama (now knowing his family is safe) launch a surprise assault against Dr. Snake and his men: in the ensuing a gunfight, Minami fires at the GR-2's Control Unit, while Dr. Snake is gun down by Minami and Tsuboyama.
With its Master down, GR-2, becomes ineffective, allowing Robo to take the upper hand and toss its evil Counterpart, then smacks it with its Megaton Punch, blowing up the missile horn on its head, stunning it. Trying to get Robo off its back, GR-2 fires its Rocket Punch, causing Robo to avoid and fall, but in a last ditch effort to put an end to it, Daisaku orders Robo to fire its Chest Missile and GR-2 is pushed back into the hole from where it emerge, and a powerful explosion rips through it, seemingly, destroying GR-2 (Hold to that thought again, Lads).
After learning from Minami that the Station has been retaken with everyone safe, Daisaku decides to go with the Tsuboyama kids and Mari to pick up their dad, riding with Giant Robo.
