Chapter 2
As always seemed to be the case, the pups weren't able to make it to the Lookout without Marshall causing a wipeout, but the good news was that nobody was hurt, and everybody learned to laugh about it, as well as laugh at any jokes made about it, whether by Marshall or by somebody else. (Occasionally, it was Rubble or Zuma that would make the joke; even Chase made a joke on one occasion.) This time, the Dalmatian didn't take the over pups down in the wipeout, however; he landed on a wagon that Rocky had been using to help him in his recycling tasks. As a result, he ended up going into the elevator all by himself, and crashing into the round wall. The other pups followed him in, and noticed a checkered flag with the PAW Patrol logo on it that Ryder used at various times had somehow got onto the wagon.
"And Marshall takes the checkered flag!" Rubble announced, handing Marshall the flag.
"And the crowd goes crazy!" Marshall added as he waved the flag, getting a laugh out of the other pups.
The elevator then began to rise, helping the pups don their work clothes for the job when it got to the middle (and it also put the wagon and checkered flag away for them). A green light flashed, prompting the pups to bark, "Ruff! Anthro mode!" They magically changed into the anthro forms that the second meteor had granted them the ability to have, but they had to bark to change back and forth for it to happen. (Ryder, however, was working on an easier solution so that they wouldn't necessarily have to bark for certain things to happen.) Then the elevator rose to the top, and the pups arranged themselves in a line, with Chase announcing in PAW Patrol tradition, "PAW Patrol ready for action, Ryder, sir!"
"Thanks, pups!" Ryder greeted as he brought the big screen down. "Sonic and his friends need our help. As you know, somebody or something tore apart the stage they'll be performing on tonight, and you pups get to be the opening act for Sonic JAM."
"All that practice is going to pay off, no doubt," Chase added.
"It sure will. In any event, all of us need to get down to the soccer field and help repair it, so I need all paws on deck. Sonic and his friends are willing to help us out, so that's a plus." Ryder took his pup-pad and slid the logos around until he got to the one he wanted, and then pressed it to bring it up on the big screen. "Chase, I'll need you, your cones, and other equipment to keep the work zone safe so that we can repair everything."
"Chase is on the case!" the police pup announced.
"Rubble," Ryder continued, "I need you and your crane to get the spotlights back up, as well as fix the curtains. Then we'll get the stage into position so that it looks solid again, and it will be safe for the performance."
"Rubble on the double!" the construction pup cheered.
"Rocky, I'll need you and your forklift to help repair the bleachers and such."
"Green means go!" the recycling pup cheered.
"And I'll need the rest of you pups as well. That also means I'm going to call in Everest, Tracker, and the others."
"We're on it!" all the pups announced in unison.
"All right! PAW Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder ran to the pole he slid down to get to his ATV, while the other pups, one at a time, slid down the slide to their vehicles, and because they were anthro pups, the vehicles were already ready for them. ("Talk about working from home!" Sonic once joked when he first met the PAW Patrol.) It was just over the bridge to the soccer field, and so Ryder didn't have to drive far, but as he did, he contacted the reserve members, who were already on the way so they could practice. They agreed to help out, too.
When everybody got there, they could see Sonic and his friends doing their part to clean up the mess, and Knuckles had to use his incredible strength just to keep the stage from falling on the others. "Mind you I can't hold this up forever," he said, "but whoever or whatever did this really wanted to see somebody get hurt in the process, or they just did it as a prank."
"I'll help you with that," Rubble volunteered. "Ruff! Crane!" The crane got to work, restoring the walls into position, and Sonic gave Knuckles a bit of a rubdown to help massage the pain. "Thanks," the echidna said in gratitude. "I needed that."
"Anytime, buddy," Sonic replied.
"Oy-oy-oy!" Tracker winced as he arrived. "What a mess!"
"Not the scene I was expecting either," Rex added.
"Ruff! Cones!" Chase barked as he secured the work area. Meanwhile, Mayor Goodway stopped by herself to look at the damage. "THIS IS A TOTAL DISASTER! EVERYTHING'S A DISASTER!" she exclaimed, going into one of her meltdowns.
"BA-BUCK, BA-GERK!" Chickaletta clucked.
"Please tell me that crazy madman isn't behind this!" the mayor finished.
"If Dr. Eggman was here, he would have totaled your whole town, not just this," Amy replied. "It may be one of the problems you regularly have that we don't."
"That's a possibility, I guess. I think I am more afraid of that crazy madman, though!"
"That's understandable," said Shadow. "The Doctor is somebody you shouldn't take lightly."
Although Dr. Eggman wasn't the one responsible for the mess here, he had a bone to pick (pun not intended) with the pups because of all the times they had helped Sonic and his friends beat him. But for now, he wasn't planning anything. He just chose to annoy his robot helpers, Cubot and Orbot, by dancing around his HQ and rapping to himself, "Who's the greatest doc around? Dr. Eggman! Dr. Eggman! Dr. Eggman! Who's the greatest doc around? Dr. Eggman! Who's the greatest doc around?" He paused for effect, and then said, "Why, it's Dr. Eggman, of course!"
"At least the boss has something to fall back on if he gives up being a villain," Cubot suggested.
"Maybe, but I don't see that happening," Orbot replied.
Zuma helped Rocky repair the bleachers by sliding each of the wooden parts back into position, making sure not to get any splinters. Rocky then used his screwdriver to put the bleachers back together again. Skye used her jetpack to get herself airborne so she could watch from the sky and be sure Rubble's crane got everything back into position, as well as check for any incoming threats. Rex's dino claw also helped with some of the repairs, and as he worked, he felt it was the right time to reveal to Sonic and his friends about his homeland, the Dino Wilds, and so he did.
"Thus, I made the comment when we visited you in Station Square," he concluded, "that dinosaurs would be my specialty subject if I went on a quiz show that required its contestants to have one." (Sonic then joked his specialty subject would be chili dogs.)
"Amazing," Silver replied. "And all this time we thought they had gone extinct."
"He and I sometimes time travel as part of our jobs to work to make the future a better future for us all," Blaze added, "but I don't think we ever went back that far."
A few questions still remained, though. Who or what did damage the stage, and why? And what time was Chickaletta eating breakfast tomorrow morning?
