Bryce's phone had been glitching ever since he left the highway. He'd glance at the screen and it'd show his location as somewhere in Antarctica. He swore that from time to time his cellular provider changed to GO AWAY.
So you can imagine his anxiety when he found himself puttering down dirt roads in the apparent middle of nowhere—not quite Antarctica, but still somewhere he'd rather not break down. He'd paid extra for the high roof option on his vehicle (when you're a creature with antlers, ergonomics are a top priority), but that didn't leave room in his budget for much else.
You can equally imagine how happy he felt when he spotted a local farmer up ahead, leaning against a fence at the edge of a field. Finally, someone to ask for directions!
Luckily, the young ferret proved more than happy to make the acquaintance of the "city buck." Bryce felt slightly embarrassed when he explained what it was he was looking for. A wombat burrow in North America.
But even more good luck: the ferret knew exactly which burrow Bryce was referring to ("everyone around here knows!"). So Bryce pulled out his notepad and began jotting down notes as the ferret...
...yammered on and on, drawling out his words, endlessly digressing into remarks about nearby landmarks and local history. All the while the sun was slowly setting. It required Bryce's full attention to pull out the relevant details, but he was getting them. Perhaps this trip wouldn't be a waste of time after all.

Bryce was so focused on getting to where he was going that he'd blocked out of his mind why he was going there. Even the ferret's name went in one ear and out the other.
Bryce had been planning to "tucker out" his problematic doll by waiting until its battery was drained before embarking on the journey. However, once he let slip that "they" were going on a car trip, the toy became so excited that it kept its charging port permanently wedged in a wall socket until it was time.
And like any little kid, the doll became fidgety in the backseat. Bryce had told it to stay in its box—he had premonitions that Bad Things would happen if people found out he had it—but the only assurance he had that the toy would obey him was that it was "shy" around strangers.
Still, if Bryce was paying attention, he'd notice the plushie occasionally lifting its head up to steal an awed glance at the "farmer." And every time Sully's eyes wandered towards the backseat, it would just as surreptitiously duck out of sight.
It's understandable. How would you react if you glanced out the car window and spotted your creator?
