The felinids, also known as Homo Sapien Hirsutus, are a recognized strain of Abhuman within the Imperium. They are primarily known as being native the world of Carlos McConnell, but they have been encountered by Kroot mercenaries across the galaxy, including on the outer edges of the Imperium. There, without the influences of the Adeptus Mechanicus, they have developed more advanced technology and more deadly weaponry, due to them rediscovering lost ancient human technology, as well as using technology stolen from the Tau. They are known for their cool in the face of the most brutal opposition, and claws the length of a forearm (which are power blades that extend from their customized armguards), and they are some of the most efficient killers in the Astra Militarum. Kroot say they are nearly indistinguishable from other humans, as aside from their feline ears and occasional tail, they look like stunningly beautiful and handsome humans. This is because the ancestors of the felinids used genetic modifications on themselves, both to adept to more hostile environments and as a way to beautify themselves. These changes caused both felinid genders to be stronger and faster than regular humans, and gifted with a better mindset for battle, even though the males still tend to excel the most at military roles. The ears of female felinid are bigger and more upward positioned than those of male felinid, with the latter also being bigger and usually more robust. While all felinids have feline ears, only a few have a feline tail, which is considered to be a desirable trait among felinids. Because proportionally many more female felinids are born than male felinids, it is the females who make up the bulk of the felinids’ Astra Militarum, with the males taking on more demanding roles such as Commissar (who aren't required to be orphans) or as higher ranking officers, or they become members of elite or specialized units such as pilots for military vehicles. Although female felinids who show merit will be able to join such units just as well, usually choosing support roles such as medic. All felinids must enlist to the military, and earn the right of citizenship by serving their local Astra Militarum, after which they are allowed to marry and enter society, with the men usually becoming providers and the women becoming housewives who take care of the children. That said, both sexes have been trained extensively from birth to fill in multiple roles on the battlefield, and in times of need it is common for citizens to be temporary conscripted into the military again. Felinid society puts an emphasis on meritocracy and independence, as well as a strong patriarchal family structure, as they are often exposed to many external threats. This is why most of the important roles within felinid society are handled by their men, despite the difference in numbers. Felinid regiment troopers often have armor that is somewhat similar in appearance to that Cadians, as a sign of respect for their tenacity in battle. However, because felinid worlds tend to have a strong middle class, it is often common for Felinids to purchase custom gear and even weaponry, provided its color scheme matches those of their own regiment. While felinids excel at warfare, they also require a more demanding diet, such as the occasional fresh meat, making them harder to maintain for the Astra Militarum. As such, the felinids developed more unique regiments, with a strong focus on logistics and orbital supply bunkers, as well as more advanced weaponry (such as tungsten artillery) and elite men who wield such weaponry while being supported by many female soldiers. They worship the god emperor, but while they are loyal to the Imperium of Man, they see the bureaucracy of the Imperium’s core planets and their own local governments as separate from their worship. As such it isn’t uncommon for felinid outlaws to form separate societies outside the rule of their local governments, and take up roles such as mercenary, or even freedom fighter if the local felinid ruling classes overstep. Though few are foolish enough to directly oppose the Imperium, and instead leave it to their politicians to try and smooth things over with the core planets. This in order to preserve their standards of living, as well as their more independent and adaptable Astra Militarum regiments. Both of which would be lost if the Imperium ever decides to take more direct control of the many worlds that the felinids inhabit.
A picture of two conscripted felinid guardsmen, both middle age but still very much able to kick some ass while being married with kids, along with a younger felinid psychic assassin, as she inspects her handywork at killing an elite Tyranid with her Powerblade claws. Felinids are from the Warhammer universe, and many of them live on the fringe of the Imperium's territories, which is why it made sense to me that they'd develop their own technology with ancient old tech and Tau tech as inspirations. Which is why I was able to sneak in this homage to the Starcraft 2 Viking :) This artwork was drawn for me by Hokunin: https://www.deviantart.com/hokunin
For those who want to play the Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty campaign again, but now with a more "Warhammer 40K feel to it", I recommend trying out the Wings of Mengsk mod, for a more "Astra Militarum" feel :) You can download the mod at giantgrantgame community mod manager: https://discord.com/invite/UCDyZyr6gg You can read the description on how to download it there, but it is actually pretty straightforward. Just download the Custom Mod Manager: https://drive.google.com/drive/fold.....U5?usp=sharing and click on the "SC2 Custom Campaign Manager" application. Click on yes for the updater, and/or select the location of where you installed your SC2 files (if you already downloaded it in the standard folder then it doesn't do this). Then click on the application again and drag the folder of your custom mod into the open application, select the mod under "select WoL mod" and then click on: "Set to active campaign". As for Wings of Mengsk as a mod, you can go to the same discord group and look at the pin under "Wings of Mengsk", or you can download it here directly: https://drive.google.com/drive/fold.....Tcc-AYb6lUDYVY Have fun! :)
The felinids are one one of my favorite yet obscure Abhuman races from Warhammer 40K. Only little is written about them: https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Felinid so I decided to fill in the blanks with what I felt would make sense, and with a nice little hint towards “cat girls”, as that is likely what the race is a reference to. Here you can see two older Felinid conscripts, who have been drafted to serve within the Astra Militarum. Normally you have two kinds of soldiers within the Astra Militarum, namely the professional Guardsmen and the conscripts. However, seeing as the Felinids are known as the most efficient killers in the universe, I thought that it would make sense that all felinids are trained as “regular” soldiers from birth, and given extensive training in the ways of war as well as laborers to help construct on site facilities as well as on site heavy ordnance, and also make repairs to existing structures. They would be able to do so with the help of laborer robotic equipment, as well as SCV’s. For those who haven’t already guessed where I’m coming from, I was actually inspired by Starcraft 2 Co-op, namely by Arcturus Mengsk as a commander: https://starcraft.fandom.com/wiki/Arcturus_Mengsk_(Co-op_Missions) whose playstyle are almost identical to that of the Astra Militarum, with tons of conscripted infantry, which is then supported by elite soldiers. For the felinid, the former would be mostly female guardsmen, and the former would be the roles that their men would take, or sometimes those women with exceptional abilities: such as the “Ghost” felinid redhead on top of the Tyranid. I love the Ghosts from starcraft, and as psychics they would very nicely fit within the Warhammer Universe. Also, notice the three Viking aircraft, which are also from Starcraft 2: https://cdna.artstation.com/p/asset.....jpg?1622606122 Like I said, the idea is that they have benefitted greatly from new technology, but that doesn’t mean that everything has to be futuristic so to say. Think of their weaponry and vehicles as AK 47’s: They are not as flashy as other weapons, but they are relatively cheap, easy to maintain, still pack a punch, and are very reliable. With regards of the Viking, I liked the idea of going with their original description: https://starcraft.fandom.com/wiki/Viking which stated that any required spare parts for the Viking could be found all over the Imperium’s inhabited planets, as most of their parts would be easily salvaged, which is one of its strengths: These ingeneously designed crafts is relatively cheap, easy to maintain, yet still extremely maneuverable (in the game you were fast and could fly around enemies with the Sky Furies from Mengsk, so to add that in the picture here I added exhaust openings on the wings, which would explain their maneuverability. However, only felinids would truly be able to make the most out of this craft, because like the Starcraft Viking, it would be extremely difficult for a human to fly. However a felinid, with their enhanced reflexes and survival instincts, could handle this craft easily enough, and put it to great and deadly use. They would also have Tungsten ammunition, such as used by the Starcraft Siege Tanks, with the vehicles that fire them having been made with a focus on making reliable and easy to maintain equipment, so not as flashy or over the top as the Tau. Though I do like the idea of the Felinids potentially making mass produced Gungdam Suits to help battle the more OP Tau battle suits, thus resulting in battles like this: https://fxtwitter.com/R1ZMY/status/.....77862436966401
As I said, little is known about the felinid except that they are known to have feline features, look mostly human, use claws in combat, and are very efficient killers. This difference in appearance could be explained by ancient genetic modifications on their ancestors from the “Dark Age of Technology”, which would also make them a reference to the genetic modified cat girl meme. Regardless, they are obviously very much based on the “cat girl” theme from Japanese media, and because of that I thought that it would be an interesting concept to make the majority of them female, seeing as you see a lot more cat girls than you see cat boys in said media. Seeing as Warhammer 40K is a very grimdark world, this also means that things like progressive ideologies are luxuries that cannot be afforded (Star Trek Deep Space 9 for example demonstrated that perfectly), and as such they would likely have very traditional gender roles. The only difference now being that men would be more valuable to society, whereas women would be more expendable, as opposed to our society where it is the way around. That is how I came with the idea of most of the felinid Astra Militarum being filled by female felinids who would have to fight in the military for a short period of time in order to earn their place in society and the right to marry and live a fulfilling life. They would be able to do that, despite how real life human women would only rarely have all the qualifications for military service, due to their previously mentioned genetic modifications, such as denser muscles. Meanwhile, their men would fill in the more demanding roles in the military due to meritocracy, such as leadership or manning the more advanced vehicles of the Astra Militarum. And once their service is done they could enter society and marry and have kids, with the women being housewives and the men being providers (to one or more women and their many kids) as well as heads of the family. This because feminine societies don’t tend to last very long, especially not in a universe with xenos species around the corner that want to eat you or worse. This would make sense lorewise, and also give a reason as to why you see so many female felinid soldiers around, whose genetic modification would allow them to fill the role of expendable cannon fodder. While their men take up the more demanding roles within the military, as they would usually excel better at those roles than even their females.
For their claws, I actually thought that it would make sense for them to have mechanical extendable claws that function just like Power Swords from Warhammer 40K, which would explain why the Groot mercenaries that talk about them in the lore mentioned that they had claws the size of their forearms. Meanwhile the Groot also met them apparently across the universe, which strongly suggests that they’d live on fringe worlds as well, and as such would have less interference from the Imperium of Man. Because of this, I liked the idea of them having different and somewhat better technology, as they could reverse engineer old long lost human technology, or through the use of their outlaws they could have gained access to traded Tau technology. This is why, as a tribute, I thought that it would be fun to give them the Siege Tank and Viking hybrid vehicles from Starcraft as their uniquely developed units, as well as others: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqHR6h6lejw
Think of these vehicles and their soldiers as their very own military within the Astra Militarum, who operate more independently due to their positioning on the fringe worlds, and are able to develop their own technology over time. They would have to of course, as the lack of the Imperum of Man would mean more independence, which also means that they could not depend on them that much, and likely would have a lot of smaller battles with their own starcraft, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyzBZ6a1pUk Also, I like the idea of the standard Viking being a sort of cheaper variant which could be purchased by civilians and militia, called a militia class Viking: https://cdna.artstation.com/p/asset.....jpg?1622605496 whereas the ones used by the military could be the variant with the pointy nose: https://cdna.artstation.com/p/asset.....jpg?1622606122 and could be a militarum class Viking. The latter would be better and would to the militia version what Mengsk’s Sky Furies are to Jim Raynor’s Vikings (See Starcraft Co-op missions).
All in all, that was my underlying thought when commissioning these artworks of the less known Felid, and I hope that you like how the pictures have turned out, and that you like my interpretation of this Warhammer race as I have described them here as well :)

That is because the two front ones are both older conscripts. The one to the right is a younger felinid girl :)
Yup! They live in the fringe, so less control from the centralist institutions. But they at least keep the tech hericy to an absolute minimum! :D
