This is actually the sketch for
nightphaser's commission, I guess i'll leave the description for the finished piece :)
120 minutes speedpaint using only a round brush with pressure set to "size", in only one layer and with no PS effects of any kind.
All those speedpaintings have made me notice i'm actually faster at painting that drawing, and way more efficient doing it that i first presumed, to the point were doing a traditional drawing is looking more and more obsolete and pointless. Not everything i'm able to do with lineart has translated itself into painting though: the biggest challenge will be to bring back dynamism, and that's going to be the main theme of speedpaintings 15-20, whose war-driven subjects will be kindly brought by
jodimest.
So a bit of review to what i've been doing: speedpaints 1-5 were focused on textures, 6-10 on characters, and 11-15 will be focused on color and will all be commission sketches (i won't post them without prior approval by commissioners, so some numbers may be skipped). All this practice has highlighted a lot of problems in my art, ranging from anatomy to composition that repetitive lineart helped hide for a long time; if anything goes according to plan, there should be quite an improvement when all this is done and i resume my traditional output :)

I'm assuming when you say this is the sketch for the commission that means the actual commissions will still be posted later, when they are fully painted and detailed? Or is this what the final ones will look like too?
And if doing these speedpaints is improving your art that much (which as usual I am not seeing the old as bad, but others have pointed out flaws and you surely know your own work best), I am rather tempted to say you should wait to finish commissions until after you've done all the speedpaints. Or will those commissions not be traditional regardless, and you're talking about your other traditional art?
Either way...man, amazing color contrast here between the cold blue of the ice cave, the red of the beast, and the gold and brown of the owl and his coat. (Great species too!) I don't know whether to be afraid for him or not should the monster be thawed...guess it depends if his intentions are hostile, or if he intends to devour him in another sense.
Will have to look back at the other speedpaints again to examine your foci.

I haven't changed workflow, i still use thumbnails/sketch/finished commission, and this is the sketch. The finished commission will be posted when it's done :)
I'm betting a lot of people thinks i've murdered quality in the name of quicker "speedpaintings", one of the reason i'm going to put "speedsketches" and finished pieces is to dispel this belief, and also to show the quality difference between the two when i finally offer actual (and cheaper) "speedpainting commissions".
It's also very tempting to "do all the study" and then doing commissions and finished pieces, but with me this has never worked, when this experiment will be finished i will just switch to a new source of (possible) improvement and getting mad with it ;)
I'm also well past a point where an art discovery or a new trick can make a night and day change in quality, and probably a lot of people will not find much difference after those studies will be complete, it's the sad law of diminished return.

Ahhh I see. That makes more sense now.
I wouldn't say you have murdered quality at all. I mean unless you're an absolute god I think any artist would have to make a few sacrifices if they're going for absolute speed. Your regular work more than shows the same quality, and has been said several times, for speedpaints your works are still WAY above many others out there, precisely because of your quality, detailwork, and knowledge.
And while no one may notice a difference in your regular work after this (though don't be too sure, even I might :P ), you will notice, and that's the important thing. :)

Did you want more reference for the upcoming series? I have to say I'm incredibly surprised that you're devoting the next five paintings to Sejhat! I thought that you were going to pick one out of the five concepts
I'm very grateful! Was there anything you wanted me to try out in exchange?

I plan to do those speedpaintings mostly in the Easter period, because i'll be visiting some parents and my usual work would cause INSTANT EXCOMMUNICATION XD
I'm going to check your suggestins around half of April and do some ref-hunting myself, if i'll have bad luck i'll let you know if i need something!
Also don't worry about doing an exchange, the concepts are interesting and fun, and I'm doing them gladly. Down the line i may start some projects of my own, and there will an occasion to complete a full trade :)

So you are telling me this is just the¨sketch¨ of a commission and not the actual commission? It´s been an interesting and very enlightening ride seeing where you´ve been taking your art as of late. From when you´ve been doing it with lineart to this final stage. WOW what a ride! So if this is just a sketch what the heck will the finished final product look like? :o
You mean traditional as in pencil-and paper? Or as in doing lineart?
In the first case, i've decided to go full digital from quite some time. By drawing on a cintiq i'm not losing traditional hand-eye coordination.
In the other case, you can't really get rid of lineart forever. I'm mostly working to become independent from it.

I think dynamism is something that is deeply connected with the concept of "line" and direction, you can have s"peed lines", like in Japanese comics, but you can't have "speed squares", Futurism was an entire art movement dedicated to this and it rarely managed to actually to capture motion like even the most basic comic can do. It's going to be an extremely complex problem to tackle.
Cool palette! For these speed paintings you did at least miniatures or you started completely from scratch with the full size? I see what you mean about skipping the line drawing, for the latest color pictures I skipped the detailed sketch step too and jumped directly from miniatures to the color picture (I outlined it with pencil first, but loosely and without shading and detail I put in pencil sketches). Though I can't do much without miniatures for now. :-P
