I've yet to actually play Poppy Playtime, but I am very much a fan! An abandoned factory full of creepy toys, plenty of lore, and you never know what's going to happen next! The Smiling Critters, both cartoon and real versions, are easily my favorite toys so far. Apart from those smiles, they're adorable, and there's something about a somewhat unsettling toy line of what are basically the Care Bears that appeals to me. Honestly, if their cartoon was real, I'd have probably watched it as a kid! CatNap in particular caught my interest; I thought having a giant cat as an antagonist would be interesting, and it definitely was. While the real world version is a horrific, homicidal... basically one-toy cult hell-bent on purging the "heretics", his cartoon version is, while creepy as all heck, a friend to the other critters. A very ominous, sleeping-gas breathing friend, but still a friend.
And you have to admit, in cartoon form at least, he's such a cute kitty~

Kaa smirked as he slithered towards the orange house. He’d seen the sunny little dog that lived there, watched as he played with his friends. He’d decided long ago that they’d all make for adorable pets, and tonight, they were all together for a sleepover. Much as he liked to savor the process of seeing an animal succumb to his spell, slowly sinking into spiral-filled bliss, so much work went into the setup for each one. A chance to snag eight pets at once and save himself the trouble was simply too good to pass up.
Especially when DogDay never seemed to lock his door.
Kaa pushed open the front door… and froze.
The house’s inhabitants were sprawled across the floor, black eyes staring sightlessly at the ceiling as a bright red gas drfited over them. Kaa experimentally flicked his tongue out; the gas smelled oddly sweet and smokey, tickling his tongue and leaving him feeling woozy.
Probably best not to breathe too much of it…
Kaa put his tail over his mouth as he slithered in further, having to resist the urge to gulp when he noticed the red stains across the floor and Critters. What had happened? They’d been perfectly fine one moment, and the next, they were…
All except one.
A purple cat slowly turned his head to face Kaa from his seat on the couch with a gaping, pitch-black grin that sent shivers down Kaa’s spine. He’d seen the cat before, lurking in the background, or standing on the sidelines as the Critters played. The snake had brushed it off, never thinking much of it, or him, until now.
Too stunned to react, Kaa quickly found himself face-to-face with the cat.
“Sssshhhhhhhhh…” he breathed, and Kaa’s world went red.
The snake slumped to the ground asleep, a smile stretched across his face as the cat reached towards him…
And patted him on the head.
CatNap glanced back at his friends, his smile only growing wider as he saw they were still asleep.
The cat slung the snake over his shoulder, and carried him out into the night.
Kaa yawned, blinking sleepily as the sun’s light shone down on him. That was a nice nap…
…Wait, nap? Morning?!
The snake’s eyes shot open, suddenly wide awake. Where even was he?! The last thing he remembered, he had run into that creepy cat-
…Wait, the cat… could he have something to do with whatever was going on in that house last night?
Kaa rose from the branch he had been lying on, and took a look at his surroundings. As… unsettling as that encounter had been, thoughts of the cat could wait; at the moment, he needed to know where he was. He was fairly sure this was the forest where he’d been staying, though where, exactly, was the question…
A glance above the treetops revealed nothing familiar… just trees, trees, and a giant, purple, fluffy cat tree supporting a house.
…He had a pretty good idea who lived there.
Kaa was mentally debating whether or not another run in with the cat was worth the better view when he heard some very familiar voices. Eyes wide, the snake lowered himself back into the leaves of the tree, and peered down at their source.
“Hoo boy, that sleepover was fun!” DogDay laughed as he walked through the woods. “We oughta do that more often!”
“Couldn’t agree more!” Bobby grinned. “Maybe next time, we’ll even get through it without Kickin getting paint on everyone!”
“That took forever to get out of my fur,” Crafty grumbled. “There’s a reason I usually wear a smock when I’m painting.”
“Come on, I already apologized and offered to get you more red paint!” Kickin groaned, face in his hands. “And don’t lie, that backflip off the couch would’ve been awesome if I hadn’t landed on those paint tubes.”
“Or slipped and fell on your tailfeathers afterwards,” Crafty giggled.
“I just wish CatNap hadn’t walked in while we were all trying to get the paint off,” Bobby sighed over Kickin’s protests. “I’ve never heard him scream before. I don’t even think he was trying to get us to sleep, I think the gas just sprayed out of his mouth while he thought someone was hurt.”
“Don’t worry, I went to his house and checked on him as soon as I woke up and realized how we looked,” DogDay smiled. “He realized it was paint pretty quickly, and then he apologized for knocking us all out while the sleepover was still going.”
“That’s our leader for you! Always looking out for his bestie!” Bobby cheered.
“…Ever wonder how that works?” Bubba asked, scratching his chin. “I mean, CatNap breathes sleeping gas, and apparently can lose control of it? Does he just have a container of it somewhere in his throat? How does he control whether or not he-“
“Eh, who cares?” Hoppy shrugged. “He helps us sleep. He’s happy, and we’re happy! I don’t need to know how it works to enjoy it!”
“…Scientific curiosity cares…” Bubba muttered, giving Hoppy a look of annoyance.
“You can probably ask CatNap next time we see him,” DogDay replied. “In the meantime, we’ve got a forest to explore!”
Kaa’s jaw dropped as he watched the Smiling Critters leave
THEY WERE STILL ALIVE?!
But… how… he’d saw… WHAT?!
….In retrospect, he may have neglected to check if they were actually breathing.
Kaa shook himself off, and breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness…. It would be such a shame for such cute little critters to be randomly slain by a homicidal maniac of a cat… who apparently was a great deal less crazy and kill-happy than he’d thought.
Whatever the case, he was hardly about to pass up a perfect opportunity. All he had to do was follow them, and he could easily snag himself a straggler… or if nothing else, get himself a guide through the woods. They had to go back to their homes at some point, after all.
The snake was about to slither after them when a rustling noise caught his attention. Kaa raised an eyeridge as CatNap ran after them from behind a tree, carrrying an armful of… signs?
CatNap pushed an arrow-shaped sign into the ground, DogDay’s name scrawled across it in orange crayon. The cat angled the sign to point at the canine in question, who was currently chasing after Hoppy and Kickin as they swung across the trees on vines, his arms spread open in case he needed to catch them.
He was so glad he’d woken up from his nap in time for the hike. Now people could find DogDay!
He liked being helpful.
“Exssscusssse me…” a voice hissed from behind him.
CatNap turned around-
And was met with the most beautiful colors he’d ever seen.
The signs tumbled from his arms, quickly forgotten as he gaped in awe at the snake’s spiraling eyes. Rainbow rings rippled through his sight, and something about them just felt good to look at. Every shift in color left him feeling warm and fuzzy, and the longer he looked, the better it felt. Before he knew it, he was leaning in closer, drinking up swirl after swirl as he stared into the snake’s eyes. Tingles of pleasure spread through his body as the spirals swept through his thoughts, CatNap drifting on a blissful rainbow river.
Kaa bobbed his head, and Catnap happily followed along. The snake moved from side to side, and pupils shrunk to pinpricks, the cat mimicked his motions. A nudge of the snake’s tail, and CatNap was swinging his hips with a smile. The snake backed away, beckoning the cat closer, and the feline staggered towards him, unwilling, unable to let the spirals leave his sight. CatNap barely noticed as he climbed a stairway of coils; all there was, all that mattered, was the snake and his colors.
CatNap mindlessly marched across loop after loop of the snake’s body, his spiraling eyes never leaving Kaa’s. The snake lowered his head, and the kitty continued on all fours, tail swishing in the air above him. A boop to the nose stopped the cat in his tracks, the cat’s eyes crossing to look at it. Kaa gestured with his tail, and the spellbound feline rose to his feet. A coil to push his arms up, another to wrap his wrists, and the two began their dance, CatNap swaying and stumbling across the snake’s body. Kaa lowered him into a dip, and gave his kitty a kiss on the head, earning a brief purr in response.
The snake lowered CatNap onto his back, and the coil he was on steepened. CatNap gleefully went down a scaly slide, his smile only widening as he landed in a bed of coils. The spellbound feline shivered in delight as the snake’s body wrapped around him, soft scales slipping through his even softer fur. Soon enough, he was coiled, and then the real pleasaure began. CatNap moaned in utter bliss as he was squeezed and stroked all over, tail wagging behind him as a scalier one scratched him behind the ear.
“That’sssss a good kitty,” Kaa hissed, his every syllable slipping into the cat’s mind. “Ssssso calm and relaxsssed… and why sssshouldn’t you be? You do sssssuch a good job helping your friendsssss get their ressssst… it’sssss high time sssssomeone helped you get your own ressssst and relaxssssation. None of thosss pessssky thoughtssss need to get in the way… jusssst let yoursssself drift… and I’ll do the thinking for you. I’ll be your Masssster, and you my pet, carrying out my commands with a smile. You’ll happily help with anything I assssk… and you’d never dream of disssobediencsssse. After all, it feelssss ssso good to obey… and in return, you’ll be cherisssshed in all the colors, coils, and cuddles you could ever want.”
Eyes spinning with color, tail flailing behind him, drool dripping from a goofy grin, CatNap had never nodded faster. “I’m all yours!”
A tug on the neck, and with a PING and a yowl of ecstasy, CatNap broke into the biggest smile of his life as red gas sprayed from his mouth.
“Wait wait wait-“ Kaa was too late to stop his pet as the gas washed over him, and with a thud, the snake hit the ground, out like a light.
“Mmmm…” the snake stirred in his sleep, eyes blinking as he slowly woke up…
And found himself face-to-face with a grinning, purring, purple cat.
Kaa yelped, suddenly wide awake as he reeled back from the coils his head had been rested on. “STOP DOING THAT!”
CatNap hung his head in shame. “Sorry…”
Kaa frantically looked around, groaning as he saw how dark it was. “Why didn’t you wake me up?!”
“You looked so peaceful,” CatNap sheepishly replied.
“All right, new rule,” Kaa sighed. “Nexssst time you accidentally knock me, or anyone elsssse, out, before you decssside to let them ssssleep, conssssider whether they wanted or needed to be asssleep at that particular moment.”
“Yes, Master,” CatNap nodded sadly. “Sorry again…”
“That’sssss quite all right, my pet,” Kaa smiled, petting his kitty with his tail as he finally noticed how dejected the feline looked. “Masssster forgivesssss you. And jussssst to let you know there’sssss no hard feeelingsssss, I’ll let you pick which of your friendsssss I sssshould entrancsssse next.”
CatNap perked up. He didn’t have to think twice about who should be next; obeying Master made him happy like nothing else.
So of course he’d pick his best friend.
CatNap pointed his tail at one of the signs, and Kaa looked over the name written in orange crayon.
“An excssssssellent choicssse,” Kaa chuckled. “And you’ll be delighted to introducssse ussss, won’t you?”
CatNap eagerly nodded, happily purring as Kaa’s tail scratched him behind the ear.

I like the critters too. Now that Catnap's found happy mindless bliss I'm sure he would love to spread it to the rest of his friends.
Bodies in soft cuddly coils with brains full of nice pretty spirals, no thoughts, no need to think or use their mind. Just snuggling alongside their friends and master in mindless bliss :)
The smaller Critters that killed big DogDay are also part of his Prototype cult
Huh, really? I just assumed they were following along out of fear and/or hunger.
