A poster orcaowl and I did for this past further_confusion !
The theme was “pixelated”, with a focus on retro gaming. I didn’t actually know a ton about retro games, so I watched a 6 hour documentary to prepare (thank you Neverknowsbest on youtube!). We knew we wanted to do something both recognizable and also a deep cut for fans of older games, and something with a fighting game and the players reflection in the screen. We went back and forth on which game it should be (Pong was on the table) and what art style we could realistically achieve in the time we had, and settled on paying homage to Karate Champ. If you don’t know, before Street Fighter 2 was the mega hit it was, there was Karate Champ in 1984. It was the highest grossing arcade game of 1985, laid the foundation for pretty much every fighting game that came after it, and it had a very simple graphical style we could actually work with! We also loved the contrast of the illustrative cabinet artwork with the simpler pixel art of the game itself. And yes, that is orcaowl and I playing the game lol. It was a lot of fun researching and pushing ourselves to do new things, and I look forward to doing more for FC next year!

Ever wonder what life would be like if a different aspect ratio had won? :P
I really do now!! Learning more about the evolution of games and what kinds of things stuck and what didn’t was super fascinating, these crazy arcade aspect ratios included!
Vector could have been the standard. :O
Those fantasy shows that have a circular TV system always felt so strange, too. There's also the question with anthros of if they'd even put the effort into video displays. Maybe they specialize in audio and "TVs" don't even exist until far later in their tech development. :P
