I still live out past where the sidewalk ends,
past all its lines and twists and many bends.
Out here I live with all my wonderful friends,
out past where the sidewalk ends.
Out past the red bricks and those big smokestacks.
I don't plan on ever, ever coming back.
If you ask me why I'm here I'll say, "It depends.
What's there beyond where your sidewalk ends?"
I'll invite you to see where the flowers grow,
to smell the peppermint winds, and to live life measured and slow.
You don't need to be young to come to know
life out past where the sidewalk ends.

Me, too. I need to get his books again. When I was a kid I used to read my neighbor's kids copy. Thanks for the comment <3
If you've ever been to Captain Tony's down in Key West, you'll know that there is something unusually... heavy... about that place, that goes far beyond the gravestones in the floor, and the sheer sense of history about the place. I like to believe it is one of those locales that extends into the Next Place. So, I think that in that particular part of Captain Tony's, where the Captain, himself is still tending bar, all the other Key West characters, who have now moved on, including Papa Hemingway, President Truman, Jimmy Buffett, and Uncle Shelby, himself, have raised a toast to you for this. :)
Thanks, Wotan. I hope I get the chance to visit there someday. I worried this poem might seem a bit cheeky given how similar it is to the original but it's from the heart. I think he would have understood.
