Ri's heart stirred, anxiety fluttering in his chest. He wanted his and Two's meal to be perfect, he wanted to make sure the day felt special, and he wanted to show appreciation for the Mewtwo waiting outside at a table in their bar.
It wasn't like they'd had a bad day so far, or even like they'd been struggling much since they'd opened their bar. Once he got used to the influx of customers and the cadence of serving them he loved making them drinks and he was grateful that Two was enjoying himself beside him, too. Being with Two was the best part about their job, and it helped make the long days dealing with people manageable. And they had ample time to chill and recede to their friends Red and Blue, a Zoroark and a fellow Lucario who knew them well and didn't mind whatever they did together. And they had their weekends, too, but having gotten used to having all seven, it was a little rough having only two days a week to truly call their own.
Today was different, though. It was Valentine's Day, and Ri and Two closed the bar for the day despite expecting numbers to have a day to themselves. They'd already celebrated to some extent; Ri made mochas for himself and his mate that morning as opposed to normal coffee, and Two made pancakes for breakfast, a favorite comfort sweet of theirs. They'd hung out with Red and Blue, watched an embarrassing movie or two (they weren't generally ones for romance movies but they figured they could try it given the occasion), and took a few hours to pursue their own interests, making music for Ri and various engineering pursuits for Two. "Stealing" the day from work made it feel special, like they were making up lost time, and Ri wanted to go further with it, he wanted to do something with this time that made it feel really special. Despite how many times he and Two had gone over it, Ri felt Two had done so much for him over the course of their mateship, even if Two assured him he was reciprocating he wanted to show it more, he wanted to do something to show appreciation. It was rough for Ri to surprise his psychic mate with anything but he managed to convince Two to go along with it - much to Two's gentle amusement and appreciation - and he had Two sit out at one of their tables while he tried to manage making a meal for them both by himself. Two always made the food whenever they made meals and didn't just order out or heat up frozen food - Ri figured he could try to relieve Two of the duty for once, and since it was just him and Two he figured it would be relatively easy. As he looked over the kitchen and all the tools he had available, then through the various refrigerators and pantry shelves and thought of what sorts of things they served at their bar and what they usually had for meals with Red and Blue he tried to think of something he thought Two would appreciate but tried to balance it with something he thought he could manage by himself.
I didn't think this would be so hard, Ri thought to himself. He pulled out some veggies from a refrigerator, though, and hoped that he could manage some kind of vegetable stir fry or maybe some egg-fried rice. He felt a little daunted by the prospect, but he pulled out a knife and set to work on a cutting board chopping up veggies. Even just using the knife daunted him - there was a reason Two generally handled the food, it was because he could use his powers to cut and use dangerous implements perfectly safely. Ri was lucky with his four-fingered paws to be able to handle the knife generally correctly, but even with how careful he was he couldn't help loose fur clinging to the veggies as he touched them. That was the reason why they had a few humans helping them in their kitchen during open hours, even with Two's paws-off cooking they found a stray fur or two in their food more than every once in a while, and besides, even if they managed to get liquor licenses and convince the humans to let them have a bar, they couldn't get by the general policy against pokemon in the kitchen. Even if it bothered Ri they weren't allowed to do that even he understood it wasn't fun getting fur out of his food.
He persevered, though, careful not to cut himself, working slowly to try to make sure things were right but also safe. He didn't want to have to make Two come and use Recover on him, after all, but he wished a little that Two were with him all the same. He wanted to do it, though, so he pushed on, finishing up with the veggies and then turning to find a wok and figuring out how to cook the rice. Panic threatened to set in as he realized he didn't really know how hot to make the wok or how long to cook the ingredients for - he got the general gist of it but he didn't know any of the details. He didn't want to ruin the meal so he seized up, wondering what he was going to do. A sudden touch from behind scared him, but he realized it was Two as he felt Two hug him from behind. Two laid his head on top of his, looking over him at the wok he was holding but not doing anything with.
Ri, Two said, his voice resounding in Ri's head, Something isn't right if you don't notice me sneak up on you like that.
... Two, Ri cried in his pseudo-telepathic voice, you're supposed to be at our table.
... You adorable Lucario, Two commented. With it, Ri felt Two bunt the top of his head, Two's way of being affectionate. I don't want to watch you worry about this all by yourself, I don't think you even realize how miserable you are, he continued, gently.
With his mate at his side again, Ri realized he felt a lot better. His anxiety melted away, his worries disappeared. He managed a moment of clarity, looking back on what he was doing and how worked up he was getting over it.
I wanted it to be special, Ri admitted. I appreciate you, you do this most days for us, wanted to do it for you for once.
It's OK, Two said. I know you appreciate me. It can still be special, let's do it together~
Ri's worries slipped away; he realized that Two was right, it was better for them just to do it together.
I can try to teach you as we go, that way if you want in the future you can do it too, Two offered, as he let go of Ri and took control of the wok.
That'd be nice, Ri admitted. I tried cutting the veggies evenly, it isn't really easy.
He watched embarrassed as Two inspected his work.
I don't think the cooks would call that passable but it's fine for me, Two said. Thanks for cutting them.
Ri beamed a little internally, though he realized that Two turned the tables on him a little and was the one making him feel special. He was happy to be with his mate, though, and he started to have a lot more fun now that Two was with him.
The wok needs to be hot, Two commented, it almost can't be too hot. That's the only way you're going to get wok hei.
Ri wondered, he was going to set it somewhere around medium but he watched as Two turned it up to make sure the wok got really hot before he even started putting anything in it. He watched more as Two took control of their meal, cooking the veggies, then the rice, then adding the egg and mixing it all up, tossing it all into the air - all using his powers so he didn't have to even get near any of the hot food and metal and explaining to Ri on the way why he was doing what he was doing. He quickly turned off the heat and transferred everything to a serving bowl he teleported into existence - Ri was pretty sure it came from downstairs in their own kitchen.
Come on, let's eat, Two suggested, gesturing to Ri back out into the bar. Ri followed his mate to the table he'd prepared for them, the candles he'd prepared awkwardly glowing kind of sadly in the center of the table. It was a little embarrassing, but it was Two, he was sure Two understood the sentiment. The candles were in the way Ri noticed; Two paused beside the table before setting the bowl down to address them.
I stared at them for a while sensing you in the kitchen, Two admitted. Wondering what about them is supposed to be 'romantic.'
I don't know, Ri admitted, it was like that in the movies we watched earlier, humans seem to think it's intimate or something.
Ri watched Two shrug; he didn't really blame his mate's sentiment. It was more of an afterthought anyway, he didn't mind as Two floated the candles off to another table to make room for their meal. Two placed it down and took the seat Ri'd given him, and Ri sat down across from him. Ri didn't really understand it, he couldn't help but feel a little giddy as he watched his fluffy Mewtwo mate smile at him; his tail twitched against the back of his chair in excitement and he couldn't help but smile back.
Thank you, Two said, for trying to make it special. I really appreciate it~
Ri beamed back at his mate, his excitement nearly uncontrollable. He looked at the bowl of food Two had made, looking forward to sharing the meal with him.
In all the fuss about the food, you didn't think of anything for us to drink, did you? Two poked. Ri realized, embarrassed, that he'd forgotten about it entirely.
Totally forgot, he admitted.
Well, we've got a whole bar to ourselves, we might as well use it, Two suggested. He got up and made his way behind their bar in front of Ri, and took a set of shaker cups in paw. He looked at Ri, then tossed the cups at him. Ri managed to catch them - now that he was present it wasn't hard for him to sense his mate's intent to throw them at him.
We could make each other drinks, Two suggested. I think that'd be cute.
Sure, Ri agreed, easily. He got up from his chair and walked around the bar to take his place beside Two, and looked out at all the empty tables and seats that were usually occupied by people and their pokemon around this time. Ri was a little weirded out looking across the steel-grey and purple themed place empty, but he was happy for the change of pace, to get to share it with Two.
I'm really happy we took the day off~ Ri sighed.
I am too~ Two agreed.
Ri realized Two was already making his drink, so he focused on the pallet of ingredients he had available to him, all of them organized how he and Two liked. There was a whole section of the bar devoted to non-alcoholic drink ingredients; they made sure to collect and curate a supply so they could serve pokemon drinks alongside their humans and help them feel included. Two had to be careful with his alcohol so Ri looked around for something Two could drink safely, and chose a couple sharp herbal tonics that he thought Two would enjoy. He found a couple Watmel berries and juiced them, figuring that while they were mostly sweet, the slightly bitter flavor would compliment the herbs he chose. He realized he wanted a little more volume so he considered watering down the drink but worried that would make it flavorless, so he decided to just double the ingredients and rebalanced them a little for taste. He heard a slight shaking sound and looked beside him to realize Two was already finishing his drink, and noticed that Two was using his paws to hold the shaker for once. He usually used his power to do anything at the bar, Ri figured he wanted it to be a little more personal. He focused on his own drink, though, and broke some ice into the big shaker then added one whole ice cube, then poured everything together and started to shake Two's drink.
I didn't realize how cold and wet the shakers get when shaking them, Two commented. Ri glanced over to see him shaking water from his paws, drenched in water. Seeing him deal with the water was vaguely amusing to Ri, in a harmless way.
You don't see the condensation on the cups? Ri wondered, vaguely teasing his mate.
I do, I just didn't think about it before doing it, Two admitted. Ri smiled to himself rather amused, letting himself enjoy finding his embarrassed mate caught off-guard on something for once. Ri had to admit as he shook Two's mocktail the condensation wasn't fun, even with his paw pads it tended to find its way into his fur, and he had to shake and dry his paws off every once in a while like Two was. The one mocktail wasn't a problem, though, so he banged the shakers apart with his palm and found a strainer and a glass to pour Two's drink for him. Looking up at Two waiting for him he found him smiling back at him gently, watching him finish up patiently. Ri smiled back at him and followed him back to their table. Once they were both seated they handed each other their drinks and they each took a sip of the drink their mate made for them. Ri's drink was sparkly, it tasted of gin and Wepear; he was fairly certain Two just made him a Tom Collins, but he enjoyed the sour notes with the juniper and the spices of the gin, couched in sweetness and lightened up by the fizzy water.
It's good, Ri commented.
It'd better be~ Two teased. This is good, too, I think leaving the water out of it was a good idea.
Ri was happy, he was a little worried that the drink would be too strong but he knew Two liked strong flavors, so he hoped it would work out.
We should eat, our food's getting cold already, Two suggested.
Yeah, Ri agreed.
Two served them both their food, Ri didn't mind it because it was easier for Two to handle with his powers. He looked down at it, thoughts running in his head of how he and Two made it 'together,' how it ended up feeling more special for both of them than it would've been if he'd done it himself.
Oh no, I think I burnt the rice...
Ri sensed genuine disappointment from his mate - but he didn't mind one bit. He thought it was actually kind of cute, he didn't want Two feeling bad over it.
We're not used to that kitchen, Ri considered, I think we forgot that it gets hotter than ours.
... I suppose it's good to know for the future, Two said. I feel bad it's burnt, though.
I don't mind, Ri assured Two. Probably wouldn't've been cooked if I did it myself.
We'd still be waiting, Two gently teased.
... Probably, Ri admitted.
Ri and Two ate together, sharing the quiet moment savoring the food and drinks they made together, and talking quietly about innocuous things like the movies they'd watched or remembering when they'd held gym battles in the room they were sitting in, or considering what they were going to do when they were done with dinner and went back downstairs to their friends who were waiting for them. Ri enjoyed getting to see Two as they ate, he liked sitting close to his side when they ate usually but even while he was able to sense it wasn't like getting to see him. Two looked at ease, comfortable, and happy, all very rewarding things to the Lucario. He couldn't help but beam back at his mate, happy for him and happy that they had a happy life together.
You're an adorable Lucario~ Two teased at him. Ri felt the rush of affection from his mate through his aura, making him fluster. I want to cuddle, let's get cleaned up and get back downstairs~
The idea sounded incredible to Ri as they got up and cleaned up after themselves to make sure that the bar was ready in the morning for service. Before too long they were walking down into their home, greeted by Red and Blue teasing them about their dinner date. It didn't bother the mates, though, they were comfortable with their friends. Ri watched Two lie down on his side on the couch he and Two liked to share, then he joined him and lied back against his mate, letting Two hug him from behind. Safe, cared for and held close to someone he loved on a special day, he felt relief and contentedness wash over him. Affection welled up in him as Two nuzzled the top of his head and rubbed his chest gently. He wanted to show it back so he rubbed his head against Two's chest, looking up at his mate as he craned his neck to rub against Two.
You goofball~ Two flirted. Ri blushed in response, then blushed more as Two reached down and pressed his snout against his for a short boop.
I love you, Ri~
I love you too, Two, Ri said back. He felt a flustered mess, but it was OK when he was safe in his mate's arms.
Happy Valentine's Day~ Two wished him.
Happy Valentine's Day, Ri wished back. They basked in each other's company for a short while, then set to playing games with Red and Blue to enjoy the rest of their night before surely cuddling a bunch more before going to sleep.

After taking a few months to get used to their new routine and realizing that they are managing to be truly happy, Ri and Two decide to reclaim some time for themselves and close their bar for Valentine's Day. Ri plans to try to do something special for Two but find himself out of his depth a little -- luckily he has a loving, caring mate who doesn't like watching him suffer.
A short, wholesome Ri and Two story which I intend to submit for a Valentine's Day-themed contest on a Discord server I'm on. I'd usually write stuff a bit longer but there's a word limit of 2500 and I'm already at over 3000 with this short story, so unfortunately I had to cut some corners I didn't really want to. I meant to get it out on Valentine's Day but got distracted by a funky browser game, so it's a bit late. I suppose that's alright, though, just continuing the tradition at this point, honestly.

I meant to get it out on Valentine's Day but got distracted by a funky browser game, so it's a bit late. I suppose that's alright, though, just continuing the tradition at this point, honestly.
