Over the next few days, nothing else occurred with Remy or his friends. The weekend passed without further incident and Remy soon forgot about the encounter with the short-tempered groundhog.
But by Wednesday, something else weighed heavily on his mind. For Wednesday was Valentine's Day. And Remy had an important question he wanted to ask Stephanie.
That morning, before class began, he spotted her in the hallway. But she seemed rather upset.
"Morning, Stephanie." he said.
"Oh, hey, Remy." she muttered.
"What's wrong?"
Stephanie sighed. "Oh, it's just been a rough morning, that's all."
"Oh. Can I ask you something?"
"This morning," Stephanie rambled, "the dryer broke down and I had to wait for my dad to fix it, and I didn't have anything clean to wear. So by the time he fixes it, I'm already running late, so he had to drop me off on his way to work. And, just as we're leaving, this groundhog pulls out of his driveway and nearly hits us! My dad blows on the horn and yells at him to watch where he's going. But the groundhog yells back at us and speeds off before giving this little gesture."
"Wow," said Remy. "I think I know who you're talking about."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I had a similar experience."
"I see," Stephanie paused. "So what did you want to ask me?"
"Oh, uh, Stephanie?"
"Yes?"
Remy's heart began to pound. "We've known each other a long time now."
"Uh-huh, and?"
"Well," Remy trembled and his heart pounded harder. "I was wondering if you and I could... well, form a closer relationship."
"You mean," Stephanie smiled, "you want to go steady?"
Remy blushed and nodded.
Stephanie reached over and hugged him tightly. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
She nuzzled his cheek and wrapped her tail around him.
"Well," she said, "we'd better get to class."
Right," smiled Remy. "Happy Valentine's."
"You too, sweetheart. "You just made my day."
