The silence between the two male animals felt like an eternity. Especially for Zoww. Though there wasn’t any evident threat, Zoww still felt like there was an elephant sitting on his chest. Here he was, standing before the very lion that his clan had not only robbed of his father, but his home. Even if Zoww was too young to have anything to do with the regicide, he was still guilty by association and fought with his clan against Simba and his lionesses. He knew that he probably deserved some kind of punishment, even if he steady knew Simba was open to the idea of him hanging around, at least that was what Nala told him. After another few seconds, Simba chuckled, seeing that there was fear in the hyena’s eyes. So the king sat down on his haunches.
“There’s no need to be scared. I haven’t come to run you out of the Pridelands like my father might have once. First and foremost, I’m here to thank you. For saving my queen and our unborn cubs. Until now. I didn’t think a hyena from where you came from would do such a thing. By all accounts, you should hate both of us.” Simba said. Nala waddled over and nuzzled him silently, simply wanting to greet him while he and her hyena friend talked.
Zoww sighed. “Heh, don’t mention it. Long story short, not sure if Nala told you or not, but a certain something happened after the fire that made me think hard about what my life was back then. About what happened to my dad. After that, saving Nala came pretty easy to me. I didn’t see her as an enemy. How could I? She did the right thing, and saved not just her own kind from starving.” He smiled towards Nala, who smiled back.
Hearing this. Simba nudged his mate and she moved away from his side, understanding he needed space for at least a few moments. “I’m sorry about your father. Scar’s actions took many of our loved ones away with little cause. But I’m sure he’s proud of what you’ve become. I’d say I’m certainly impressed.” He smiled and then raised the volume of his voice a little. “Zoww, by the power vested in me, I pardon you for fighting against us during the battle for Pride Rock. You have shown a level of growth and willingness to respect the circle of life that I will not overlook. That, and I owe you for saving the queen and the future of this kingdom. You’re to be commended.” Simba had cut right to the chase it would seem, and Nala beamed with happiness to see that Simba saw in this hyena what she had seen.
A breath of relief left Zoww’s body, and he approached Simba and lowered down into a bow. “Thank you both, you don’t know how much this means to me. I practically grew up here most of my life like Nala did. I really didn’t want to leave it behind. Just one thing..” He rose his head up again, which made Nala and Simba both perplexed.
“Yes?” Simba asked.
Zoww looked around as he raised himself up. “If I am gonna be the only hyena around here, what if other animals don’t want me here? I don’t know how long I’d last if, say, a herd of angry zebras wanted to make sure what happened under Scar doesn’t repeat itself.” Nala frowned and went back over to Simba. She whispered into his ear, taking a glance at the hyena as she did so. Whatever she said, Simba didn’t seem too sure, until Nala whispered again. The king then nodded, and both royals turned their gaze back to the hyena.
“That is a valid concern. For now, I think it might be best to let you stay at Pride Rock for at least a few weeks. The others know you’re around, but perhaps if we show that we trust you enough to be close to the Pride for a while, most of the other animals won’t be concerned about your presence.” Said Simba.
That’s when Nala chimed in for the first time since Simba began talking to the hyena. “We will handle anyone who takes issue with you being here. This is about you, and your chance to become a better person than you were before. Don’t just do it for the Pridelands. Do it for you. I know that I trust you, at least.” The queen and the hyena shared a smile at one another before Nala looked towards her mate. “Perhaps we should get going now. I think the cubs are getting extra hungry.” She chuckled and winced a little, feeling a sharp feeling travel through her distended stomach. It had been feeling odd since she woke up. Like a pressure was building. Was she just running on empty this morning?
“I think we should too. The sooner Zoww meets everyone, the better. You won’t be the first non lion animal I introduce to everyone. Has Nala told you about Timon and Pumbaa?” Simba stood to his paws and began to head back in the direction of Pride Rock.
“Oh yeah, I remember them. I actually knew Timon before meeting him. Shenzi mentioned him once when we were talking. Something about how charming he was for a morsel. Shenzi was…complicated like that.” Zoww moved up to Simba’s side as they began talking. Nala waddled behind a meter or two, wanting to take her time.
Nala was feeling under the weather now, she realized. Something felt off inside her belly as it swayed from side to side. The pressure kept building. At first she thought it was hunger pangs, or nasty indigestion, but this feeling had spread out like water being poured onto a flat stone. The queen was about to comment on how she wasn’t feeling well….it happened.
Simba and Zoww were brought to a stop when they heard Nala gasp sharply and stagger to a stop. Her eyes were wide with pain as she looked back towards her bloated belly. Nala panted softly before another of these sharp pain squeezed around her torso, her stomach visibly shuddering. With a groan of pain, she took a few more steps forward.
“Nala? Are you okay?” Zoww asked with concern. Simba looked even more worried, probably having out two and two together.
Nala stopped walking and groaned in pain as another sharp pain constricted around her stomach. She reached a paw up and rubbed at her belly, trying to soothe the pain. “We have…to get back home. Now! The cubs…I think…ooohh….I think it’s time…I’m in labor!” She cried out towards the two males, who stood there frozen for a moment, watching Nala with gaped jaws.
Nala groaned and then roared at them. “Hey! Don’t just stand there! I have to get back to Pride Rock! Now! I don’t think I can walk on my own much longer..” She moaned again after taking another few awkward steps toward. Simba rushed to her side and leaned into her.
“Zoww! Run ahead to Pride Rock. They’ll know who you are. Tell them Nala’s in labor and isn’t far behind you.” Simba hollered towards the hyena. Zoww nodded his head.
“Y-yes sir! On it! Hang in there, Queenie!” With that, Zoww ran away as fast as he could, right back towards Pride Rock, ready to save his closest friend yet again from whatever childbirth had in store for her.
However, the last thing made Simba confused as he and Nala started to slowly walk in tandem in the direction Zoww had gone in. “Wait, Queenie?..”
Nala, while panting and fighting off some intense pain, was able to smile. “I don’t see you coming up with a cute nickname for me…~”
