The months that followed were even busier than the first half of Maki’s pregnancy, especially since this time, she couldn’t spend the first nine weeks of them being unaware or in denial of it.
Between handling a job that could be stressful even when she wasn’t dealing with the physical, mental, and emotional strain of pregnancy, navigating a changed (and still changing) social life, and taking care of herself as best she could, that was tiring enough. Considering Hana was on a timer, one of unknown length but Maki knew the big day was only ever getting closer, that added a layer of busy that she’d never handled before. She had to keep tabs on her health, she had to read and take classes on pregnancy and childbirth and how to take care of a baby, she had to plan for her maternity leave, she had so much to do and her kit was coming whether she was ready or not so she had better get ready for anything.
She got her position as vice principal from working long hours, but now her friends and family practically had to force her to relax sometimes. She told them this was training for what was coming: Being pregnant wasn’t easy, but once her kit was here, this was going to be a cakewalk by comparison. Warnings about having a pessimistic outlook were answered with reminders that she wasn’t being pessimistic; she was being realistic, and she wasn’t going to let Hana or herself down. That was what she knew, and she wasn’t going to be talked out of it.
Under that, though, was something that nobody but her mother, her sister and brother-in-law, and Sara were allowed to know. As she (to her surprise, even though it ended up being a pleasant one) told Sara in their first meeting, she hadn’t gotten over her guilt at how long she’d denied her pregnancy and how she felt lucky she hadn’t lost her kit from failing to get proper medical care. She was never going to make that mistake again and would take it completely seriously. Again, in their own ways, the people closest to her appreciated her dedication and willingness to make up for a past failure...with the reminder that she might have failed then, but that didn’t make her a failure. She’d already shown she’d learned from her mistakes, now she needed to forgive herself for them.
What it amounted to was that they were months of push and pull, with Maki pushing herself harder than ever in her life and people close to her pulling her back from going too far, sometimes to her exasperation but more often to her gratitude.
Despite her promise to never slack off, she still put in some relaxation time, even if she sometimes had to justify it by calling it self-care. A moment that stuck with her was when she and her sister Chiharu were having yet another argument about Maki working too hard, and her sister told her:
“Maki, as much as Taishi and I are looking forward to being Auntie Haru and Uncle Taishi, I still wanna be a good sister to you, so I gotta tell you something. Even though she’s going to be the biggest responsibility of your life, please don’t ever think of her as only a responsibility. I know it’s not easy being pregnant but take the time to enjoy it for its own sake when you can. Connect with Hana as your baby. And remember to love yourself, too: Find some time to just...do things to make your own self happy.”
That helped her put things in perspective from then on.
While she still spent a good amount of her downtime studying, she let herself ease up some more. Instead of dutifully taking notes on the books she was reading or on the online classes Sara had recommended, sometimes she would let herself just lounge at home in her pajamas and read or listen at her own pace. She’d already adjusted her yoga routine to take the new workout partner in her belly into account, but at least once a week (more often if she could make the time) she made herself set everything aside for a couple hours and go to a prenatal yoga class at the gym. Her friends had already been understanding of her new commitment, but she stayed in touch with them as much as she could, even if sometimes that meant IMing or calling them while dividing her attention between them and whatever she was reading at the time. She made more of an effort to remember how lucky she was to have a kit on the way.
Meanwhile, one other big question was increasingly on her mind. When her mother proposed the idea that they move somewhere so she could help raise Hana, Maki hadn’t been keen on the concept. Yeah, she loved Mom, and she already knew Mom had raised two children in worse circumstances than Maki’s, but she felt that she’d already spent plenty of time living with her growing up. They definitely had rough patches (and rough years) back when she was in grade school, and she wasn’t eager to risk going back to that from disagreements over how to raise Hana. Besides, Hana was her child, not Mom’s.
But what she had a harder time admitting was that Mom moving back in with her made her feel like...a failure. Like she’d been an independent, mature woman who’d spent decades taking care of herself and making responsible choices, and now she didn’t deserve it anymore. She never thought of her kit as a mistake and had no tolerance for anyone who suggested otherwise, but while she had come to understand being a parent was going to mean sacrificing dignity for her child’s sake, it still just felt like now she needed Mom to come to her rescue and be a mom again because she didn’t know if she was good enough to raise a child alone. It made her feel even guiltier considering Mom raised her and her sister mostly alone. How could Mom not be embarrassed that her 42-year-old daughter needed her help? And this wasn’t a “spare a few bucks to make rent” type of problem: Mom was volunteering to be a full-time grandmother to raise an accidental child from newborn to adulthood. For all intents and purposes, she was asking to be Hana’s other parent.
Around the time Maki hit 24 weeks pregnant, she had a much-needed talk with Mom and finally told her all of that. She needed to know why Mom wasn’t ashamed of her. What did Mom have to say?
“Miyako, I want to help because I love you and Hana. We both remember the years I harped on you and Chiharu about, ‘When are you gonna get married and give me grandkits?!’ Once Haru got married and I had to accept that they didn’t want kids, I wasn’t happy about it, but I wasn’t so selfish to hope either of you would have one by accident. But I remember what you said when we had that big phone call and I found out I was going to be a grandmother: That this was your last chance to be a mother, that you thought you’d lost it, and you were going to embrace it. I still don’t approve of your premarital activities, but, honey...replace ‘mother’ with ‘grandmother’ and that’s how I felt, too.”
The rest of the talk was the most emotional Maki and Mom had had in many years, other than when Maki told her she was pregnant. Mom told her that she couldn’t show it to her kids but there were many times she questioned if she was raising them right and she had to just put on a strong face and hope for the best. But seeing them grow up into women she was proud of was a constant reminder that all that worry was unfounded. She’d hoped both of her daughters would get (and, unlike her, keep) what she wanted: A stable marriage and kids, but she had some empathy for Maki when her ex turned his back on her and their child. Maki was capable of making her own choices whether Mom agreed with them or not, and she chose to keep and raise her baby. Mom agreed with that choice, so she was going to do her part and be there when her family needed her. If Hana was only going to have one grandparent, she’d have the best grandma ever.
Maki said that they would both have a lot of work to do to figure out how they were going to share parenting duty, but she made it clear that she didn’t want Mom to take it easy on her just because she was her daughter. Mom laughed and said, after all she’d been through for her children (and all that her children had put her through), if she thought anyone wasn’t fit to be a parent, she had no problem telling them so, and she knew Maki wanted to be the best mother she could be, so she’d get her into shape. None of her daughters were going to be careless about family.
After a good laugh back, Maki warned her mother she was the kind of student who was happy to challenge the teacher back, and Mom’s offer to live together and raise this kit together was accepted.
The rabbit was more on the serious side compared to most people she knew, preferring plans to spontaneity and consistency to change. That wasn’t to say she couldn’t appreciate surprises and creativity, she just had to be good at establishing and staying in control, given her job was being one of the main administrators of a school full of kids and all their personalities bouncing off each other, and in a middle school’s case, they were at that age when they were starting to handle big changes in themselves in many ways. Having to walk the balance of doing her job while being impartial, patient, and firm even as her new personal issues were weighing on her was...difficult. Much of what would have been relaxation time was now being used in some way to prepare for Hana, and that didn’t make it better, either.
Still, she found time for fun, and one weekend late in her pregnancy, an idea came to her.
She didn’t consider herself much of an artist, but one thing she’d enjoyed since she first tried when she was in school was making and editing videos. Starting in middle school, she spent years as a member of various A/V clubs and kept it up as a way to express herself during a certain period in high school when she wasn’t the best student. In college, it remained a hobby she practiced in her free time, especially after she discovered the anime music video trend. By the time everyone had cameras on their phones and sharing videos online became something pretty much anyone could do, she didn’t have a lot of time for it anymore, but it was still a way for her to create things she enjoyed, and the process of creating them let her turn her focus away from her problems when she needed a break while still being constructive. And she always looked forward to seeing, commenting on, and contributing to her own school’s video projects, both those professionally done and those created by the students.
She’d kept a log of her pregnancy for her own peace of mind that everything was going okay and as something to look back on later, but she had another, special video to record, one she already couldn’t wait to watch with Hana one day.
So, one Sunday morning, after making a recording of her weekly progress and pregnancy thoughts, the now very pregnant Maki sat at her computer with her camera propped up to record herself and tapped the start button.
“Good morning, sweetheart!” she greeted her future child with a bright smile, always avoiding calling Hana by name or gender in her videos just in case she broke the firstborn girl trend. “It is May 5th, and you have been in Mommy’s tummy for 35 weeks! Today, for our me-and-you time, we’re gonna learn a little more about you and teach you what good music is.” She held up the noise-cancelling headphones she wore when earbuds weren’t enough. “I had this thought: Why don’t I let you listen to some music I listened to when I was in school, and we see what you think of it? So, now that I can feel you’re awake...which, by the way, if you want to sleep until 8:30 when you’re out of me, you’re very welcome to keep doing...what we’re gonna do is, I’m going to put these here,” she slid the headphones on her belly and held them on with one hand, “like so,” she reached up to start the playlist she had queued up on her computer, “aaand...time for a party at your place!”
She would edit in the audio from the music and captions with the song titles and artist names later, but she started with something from early elementary school:
Pop – Too Good to Stop – Serena Adams
Bouncy, upbeat music from over three decades ago came through the headphones, a song she hadn’t heard in public except on the occasional loudspeaker at grocery stores and gas stations. Still carried a good beat as far as she was concerned, and when the first big refrain came in, she mouthed the words as she thought back on singing along when she was little. She nodded her head and tapped a foot to the rhythm as she waited to see how Hana reacted, and the unborn kit...
Didn’t seem to care for it. She still gave some light kicking and twitching around in there, but no more than before. Maki looked down at her belly, cocking an eyebrow as she hummed along to see if maybe that would coax Hana into it. But nothing doing.
“Okay, so that’s not your jam,” she supposed as she stopped the song. “How about this: One time, I asked Grandma what kind of music she listened to before I was born. So we listened to,” she clicked the next song, “this.”
Disco – Dancin’ All Night – Colors
Now the song was groovier, funkier, and with a louder, steadier bass guitar keeping the beat. The rabbit remembered when Mom showed her the dance moves she’d learned for this kind of music, and today, the thought of her now-67-year-old mom, let alone the mother Maki had known growing up, on the dance floor of Ye Olde Discotheque back in the day was so hard to picture that she wasn’t sure she’d believe it if it weren’t for Mom pulling off those dance moves in their living room of their old house...along with showing her some photos from back then. But considering Maki as a little girl enjoyed the music too, she conceded that was a point for Mom.
Alas, again, Hana didn’t have the same opinion.
“Huh. Well then, let’s jump ahead a few years.” She skipped this song and started the next. “In sixth grade, this was our anthem.”
Rock – In It to Win It – Ned and Sons
Jamming on electric guitars, thrashing on drums, and vocals that were as much shouting as singing. Perfect music for kids who wanted to test their limits and be loud for its own sake while they pretended to be super rebellious. And it brought back memories of when Mom had told Maki to either turn that crap off or get kicked outside more than once, with similar warnings from Chiharu when she was trying to study.
“C’mon! This has gotta do something for you!” she half-begged, half-ordered her kit.
A couple of thumps of Hana’s feet on the top of her belly were the only answer she got back.
Rolling her eyes, she stopped the music. “My dear little one, I know this is new to you, but you’re gonna make this a really boring video if you don’t do a little showing off,” she complained, starting the next song.
Trance – Edge of Everywhere – Level S
No.
Video Game – Time Stopper Main Theme – TriangleSoft
Nope.
Anime – All-Time Hero – Fairy Dust
This had to do it. It was the music she used in the first anime music video she ever made. It wasn’t just a good song; it was one that had some personal meaning for her. As the fast-paced beat and powerful, uplifting lyrics stirred her heart, she even stood up and, still holding the headphones to her belly, did a little dance along with it.
To her relief, it seemed this was finally getting through to Hana. She felt the kit’s kicking and punching get stronger, and encouraged her, “Yeah! Now you’re getting into it!” She stepped closer to the camera, still nodding her head to the music, and tried to capture the movement of her kicking baby. It worked for a little while, but not long after she stopped dancing, even though the music was still playing, Hana stopped moving so much.
Darn...it wasn’t even the music she was reacting to; it was mostly Maki’s dancing.
The rabbit sighed, poking her belly. “And you really don’t care. You are one tough audience,” she grumbled as she sat back down. “Sorry, but if that didn’t work, nothing will. Guess we’re going to have to wait ‘til you’re out here to try this again.” She pointed at her belly and gave a stern look at the camera. “But you’re still growing up knowing good music, not some of what I...used...to...”
Her train of thought came to a halt when she remembered some other music she used to listen to, namely in her sophomore and junior years of high school. She’d avoided testing Hana with this on purpose for several reasons, not the least of which was she tried not to think about that phase of her life too much.
...Still...
Her head hung forward and her ears flopped down as she said, “I guess you’ll find out about what I used to be like from Grandma or Auntie Haru telling you sooner or later.” After searching for a new song, she added, “If you’re going to grow up with a vice principal as your mom, you might listen to this when you turn 16 just to get back at me.” She got the song ready, took a deep breath, and...
Punk Rock – I’ll Hurt Them to Hurt You – Grayface ft. Abyssal Empire
Like the rock music that she played before, this was best described as “loud and forceful.” But this time, the lyrics were more aggressive on a personal level. They talked about how the singer would get revenge on those who’d wronged her by targeting those close to them and about how much she’d enjoy it.
Maki waited to see how, or if, Hana would react to this. She didn’t have to wait long.
“Oof!” she grunted as Hana’s foot thumped her. Actually, that was probably from both feet. “Ah, jeez, don’t tell me this is your- mm!” She was cut off by both a kick in the top of her tummy and a headbutt in her pelvis. “Ugh, please, no...”
She let the music play on, not sure whether her kit was now very active from loving or hating the music. She alternately looked between her belly and the camera with a mix of amusement and nervousness. Then she stood and let the camera see how easily Hana’s movements could now be both seen and felt. If she weren’t used to being pregnant now, she would have thought it was almost creepy seeing an unborn child move so much, and now she was seeing from the outside and feeling it from the inside.
By the time the song ended, she was glad she thought to do this at week 35 instead of week 40. Hana already had strong legs and adding five more weeks would’ve made the thrash session she’d just done even more of a strain on her tummy.
“Hoo, okay,” she huffed, stroking her slightly sore belly to try to calm the kit down. “I don’t know if I should’ve done that, and not just because that song is definitely not appropriate for babies...but, honey, I love you, but you’ve got bad taste in music.”
Still, she gave the camera a rock-horns gesture and stuck her tongue out at it before she stopped recording. She was already looking forward to sending the final video to her circle of friends and family, and despite wondering if she’d just planted the seed of an idea in her child’s head that she would regret later, this was pretty fun.
After Hana gave her another double-footed kick, she shook her head with a grin as she rubbed her eyes. “Next week, we’re doing meditation exercises.”
Maki saw an obstetrician for her prenatal care, but she kept in touch with Sara. She sent Sara her notes on her pregnancy, from the good to the bad to the gross parts. She welcomed every chance to learn the midwife gave her. She enjoyed the relief she felt from connecting with her, whether it was on the phone or through texts or emails, knowing Sara was there to guide, teach and encourage her.
She only came to the birth center two more times during her pregnancy, but she looked forward to each one more than the last. Each time, she had a great conversation with Sara that left her feeling like Sara believed in her and with renewed confidence she could get through whatever pregnancy and her eventual birth could throw at her...and that she had someone in her corner to help her if she needed it.
Her friends and family were sympathetic ears when she needed them, whether it was from how hard being pregnant could be or from her worries about what was coming afterwards, and it was a particular relief when she could talk to those close to her who’d had children and could relate to her experiences. But when she talked with the midwife, she appreciated Sara’s experience and felt like she would know if something was wrong. It was more friendly and casual than talking with her doctor.
Now, at 36 weeks along, they were coming up on the end of her last visit before Hana made her much-anticipated entrance, and Maki lay on one of the exam room beds, relaxing as the dog’s large but gentle hands ran along her kit’s increasingly cramped home. For having such big hands compared to Maki, it still surprised the rabbit how delicate Sara could be while still feeling out what she needed to know.
The kit shifted as Sara got a feel for where she was, which prompted Sara to reply, “Sorry, little one, I know you don’t have a lot of room in there anymore and now you’ve got these huge, nosy fingers poking you around.”
Maki smiled and shook her head. “No, I’m pretty sure it’s because she likes you by now.”
“Aw, thank you,” Sara said as she finished examining where Hana was. “Well, she’s still nice and head-down. She oughta settle deeper down and really get locked in a couple weeks from now, but I don’t think she’s gonna be doing any more somersaults.” A kick at her fingers made her chuckle, “Hah, though not for lack of trying.”
The rabbit laughed, “Heheh, you saw that video I sent you from just after that yoga session when she wouldn’t sit still. I’m flattered she likes it when Mommy exercises, but she’ll have plenty of room to do it once she’s out of me. Speaking of, I can’t remember, did you see my 35-week video?”
“The one with the music? Yep! That was adorable, I love it when people play music for their babies!” she answered as she wrote down some notes on her clipboard. “Some pretty great tunes, I haven’t heard some of those in a long time!”
“Then you know just what I’m talking about.”
As Sara finished making her notes, she looked back at Maki and asked, “Does she get it from her mother?”
Maki glanced down at her tummy and shook her head. “I dunno. I’m a hard worker, but I don’t think of myself as ‘bouncy.’”
“Nooot quite what I meant.” When Maki looked at her questioningly, she gave her a sly grin. “It sounds like you had a...phase in high school.” Maki smiled back nervously, making Sara raise an eyebrow. “Were you a rebel back in the day?”
“Ah...um...” Maki stammered.
Sara giggled, waving it off. “I’m sorry, you don’t have to tell me, but it just made me so curious.”
Blushing a bit with her ears flopped back against her head in embarrassment, she nodded. “Since I’m already trusting you with...kind of a lot, I guess I can trust you with this, too.” She pointed at her purse on the floor. “Hand me my phone, please.” Once it was in her hands, she browsed to a yearbook website and pulled up a certain photo. “For a while before high school, I was into the ‘grrl power’ thing back when it was big, and then...I’ll show you, but I gotta tell you, it may ruin the magic of what you think about me,” she warned before turning the phone around.
On the screen was a handful of teenagers, all similarly dressed, and one of them was a white-with-some-black rabbit who looked very different from the woman she grew up into: Black eyeshadow and lipstick, short hair with a single long dyed-red lock in her face, a collar styled to give the impression of vampire bite marks, a shirt proclaiming herself as a fan of the Grayface band, a skirt much shorter than any she’d be caught dead wearing these days, and a few chains, belts, and similar accessories.
“Oh my goodness!” Sara exclaimed, though her smile was even wider.
Maki rolled her eyes and nodded. “Yep! In 10th and 11th grade, Vice Principal Morita was one of the kids who kept getting sent to the office. Guess that didn’t change. I still go there, but now I sit on the other side of the desks.”
Sara rubbed her chin. “Wow. I gotta say, one other thing that didn’t change is you knew what kinda style you liked!”
“Ah, please, you don’t have to be nice about it. I was...a handful during those years. My sister was in college by then, but even when Mom only had to worry about me...yeah, let’s just say it took a while for her to stop blaming me for how much sleep she lost.” With a snicker, she put her phone away and said, “At least if Hana takes after me, I’ve got some idea of what I might be in for. Gotta admit having a couple years of bein’ bad helps me relate to some of the kids, too, and helps me see which ones are acting up and which ones actually have problems.”
“Best I can say is, ha, good luck,” Sara chuckled, “but some good news I can give you for now: Everything’s looking perfect for Hana to come out and join us in a month!”
She nodded in satisfaction. “Still kind of amazing that it’s...that soon.” She looked down at her belly, stroking it thoughtfully as Hana nudged her palm. “This thought that after all the waiting, all the doubt it would ever happen, all the ups and downs getting here...” she sighed, “so many kids over the years have known me as ‘Ms. Morita’ or ‘Vice Principal Morita’...but now there’ll be one who’ll know me as ‘Mom.’”
Sara patted her hand. “Just remember, all the things you’re feeling? They’re all normal. They’re all okay. And you’ve got a lot of people on your side.”
She smiled at Sara, moving her hand to hold hers. “I know. This whole thing has made me so grateful for those people.” She smiled a little wider. “You included.” The dog matched her smile, which led to Maki pushing herself to sit up in the bed. “So, looks like the next time I see you will be in the hospital.”
“Like I said, I’m with you, wherever you wanna be,” Sara answered.
She nodded. “Thanks. Maybe if it weren’t for that false alarm scare a week ago, I’d have changed my mind after all and I’d come here...I mean, I really trust you, but...yeah, sticking with my plan.”
“And you’re callin’ that shot, so your plan’s my plan.”
“Great. Actually, that reminds me.” She patted her belly and asked, “I still wanna go natural, but how’ll you know the difference between me being all, ‘Oh, it hurts, I can’t do it anymore,’ and if I really mean, ‘I’m done, gimme drugs?’”
“Good question. First, I’d say I’m pretty good at getting a feel for people,” Sara said.
“As I can attest to, as well,” Maki agreed.
“Thanks. But one thing that’s worked is a word or phrase you can say to show you’re not just saying that and you’re really tapping out.”
She quirked her lips in thought. “Mmm, that makes sense...got any suggestions?”
“How about ‘banana tree?’” Sara offered. “I used to suggest ‘banana bread,’ but one time I had a patient who liked banana bread and used that as her tap-out phrase, and then she lost her taste for banana bread for almost half a year.”
Maki winced in sympathy. “Ouch.”
“Yeah. So, unless you like bananas...”
“Heh, no I don’t, so I wouldn’t be missing much if we went with that.”
“Okay, great! Then how’re you feeling otherwise about your big day?”
Maki took a deep breath. “I’m feeling...oh, you know, just...everything. Excited, anxious, hopeful, nervous, impatient...” then she gave Sara a smile and a thumbs-up, “but I’m gonna be ready when Hana is!”
Sara nodded and thumbs-upped her back. “There ya go! Just give her a couple more weeks before she’s all systems green, and then it’s up to her.”
For all the clashing emotions Maki felt, one of the feelings she was most grateful for was the confidence that whatever she had to do, she could do it. She would do it, and if she needed help, she couldn’t be in better hands.
The last month of Maki’s pregnancy was no less a flurry of activity. Rereading all her pregnancy/birth/parenting books and taking the last classes to make sure she knew every little detail she could. Closing on a house to move into over the summer. Arranging the moving plans with Mom. Wrapping up the school year. Getting things set up for when she was on maternity leave. Having just the right baby stuff for Hana.
All of that, and then some, while lugging around, with mixed affection and annoyance, a kicky, increasingly big kit.
Despite this never having “supposed” to have happened, despite all the uncertainty and worry and physical and emotional pain, despite...everything, Maki felt that she’d kept her promise to herself and her baby: She’d gotten her body, her mind, and her life ready for motherhood.
And, on a warm, clear June night, the long-awaited, much-beloved baby she thought she might never have was finally born.
Though, for all her preparations, that didn’t go according to plan in several big ways. Right from the start, even. After all, it happened...
One week early...

Maki’s Story
Chapter 2: The Second Half(ish) of Pregnancy
In this chapter: We take a look at the rest of Maki’s pregnancy. She learns to make time for herself even with a baby on the way, she comes to an agreement with her mom on accepting help raising her child, she does some prenatal mother-child bonding, and she has her final visit with Sara before the big day.
Maki conceived her first and only child despite her age and her precautions. As big of a surprise as her pregnancy is and as hard as it can be, she loves her baby with all her heart and is doing everything to get her life ready for her one last chance to be a mother.
A/N
Another section I was originally going to have BP write, but I couldn’t stop myself once I started.
All the scenes in this chapter were fun to write, just like the rest of the story, but scene 3, where Maki is playing music to her belly to try to get reactions from her baby, is still absolutely adorable for me to imagine. Teen punk Maki is also a fun thought :)
Enjoy, and coming up: The big day itself.
