Erakir and Nafster were taking a stroll near the pier. It was a nice sunny day, perfect for entertainment! And it looked like they were about to experience some of that.
"You, you two! It looks like you need some spice in your life!" a chameleon woman called over to the moogle and snow leopard.
"What does...what is that supposed to mean?" Nafster stopped and asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Don't you ever want to see some magic? See the unnatural with no explanation?" she continued to speak grandly in her "sales pitch."
"So you're like a magician?" Erakir questioned as he and Nafster approached the chameleon at her "setup," which was just a cardboard box she stood behind.
"You could say that! My name is...let's go with Mel today." the chameleon said as she clapped her hands together. "How would you two fellas like to see some of my amazing pierside magic?"
"That depends, is it free?" Nafster asked with a raised eyebrow, expecting some sort of catch.
"Completely free! But the magic does involve money!" Mel responded. "But I assure you that I won't be keeping anything of yours. You have my word." she said, holding up a hand with the other one over her chest.
"Well...it's worth seeing it out. I wouldn't mind some magic." Erakir looked to Nafster to see what he thought.
"Yeah, okay. If you're into it then I'm into it."
"Great! So to start I'm going to need both your wallets." the chameleon said holding both her hands out.
"Our...wallets...?" Nafster asked deadpan. "You really think we're that stupid?"
"Oh no, of course not! I get why you wouldn't trust a stranger with it. Here, as a show of good faith, there's my wallet." she said, reaching into her pocket and putting it down on the box. "Feel free to look through it, make sure it's legit."
"I'll take you up on that." Erakir said, looking through and nothing inside seemed out of the ordinary - the ID and everything matched, and if she stole the wallets now they had her address to report her.
"It looks clean to me." Erakir said. "We'll give them to you, but why do you want them?"
"For the magic of course! Trust me~!" Mel said.
The moogle and snow leopard looked at each other with a shrug, reaching out into their pockets and putting them in the chameleon's hands.
"Thank you, good sirs..." she paused, opening the wallets and looking at the names on the IDs. "Erakir and Nafster. Interesting names, but that doesn't matter!" she flipped them closed. "Now for the magic." she said, putting them both down on the box as she held her hands over them and performed a wiping motion above them. "And done!" she smiled. "If you would please open up the wallets, but leave them on the table."
Erakir and Nafster looked at each other before reaching over and following the chameleon's instructions.
"Hey, there's a playing card in here!" Erakir pointed out. "My ID is gone!"
"Mine too!" Nafster did the same. "And it's...blank?"
"Yeah, so is mine..." Erakir and Nafster looked to the other's wallets and back to their own then back to Mel.
"Looking for these~?" she cooed, holding the two's ID cards in her hands.
"Okay, that was pretty impressive." Nafster chuckled. "I'll take that back now." he went to reach for his ID before Mel pulled her hands away.
"Well hold on now, we're not done yet!" Mel shook her head with a smirk.
"What else is next?" Erakir asked.
"Well we have to start by figuring out what's the deal with those blank cards! If you would take them out of your wallets and hold them out in the palm of your hands.
Without much else to do, they were already in this deep so Erakir and Nafster both reached into their respective wallets and pulled the blank playing cards.
"Looks like they're supposed to be Queens?" Erakir said, looking at the "Q's" in the corners of them.
"Correct! Very observant. Now hold them close, and watch as two become one!" Mel said in her grandiose voice.
The moogle and snow leopard nodded, slowly bringing their palms together until the cards touched, and then in what felt like an instant they pushed toward each other, and suddenly, the two cards were now one, a half of it on each of their hands.
"Whoa! Didn't expect that!" Nafster commented with a laugh.
"Yeah, that was pretty sweet!" Erakir agreed, though there was a problem - he couldn't take his hand off the card.
"H-hey, I think something went wrong, I can't move my hand!" Erakir said, and judging by the look in Nafster's eyes, he was experiencing very much the same.
"No no, that just means it's working!" Mel reassured the two. "Can't have you trying to get your wallets back after all, then how am I going to get some easy money?"
"I knew this was a trick!" Nafster shouted, trying to use his other arm to pull his stuck one free to no avail.
"Do feel free to struggle like this, it'll just make everything go much faster, makes it less likely someone will notice." the chameleon spoke, already going to the wallet and digging through for cash and cards to see what they were carrying.
Erakir and Nafster had bigger things to worry about than that though, they both felt themselves suddenly being pulled toward the card itself, just as the two cards had done earlier! The magic wasn't just affecting the cards, but the two themselves.
Their bodies continued to be sucked into the card, with Erakir taking up one half of it while Nafster would take on the other half. During the process, their outfits would alter drastically.
Around both of their necks, frills formed while regal robes replaced everything underneath that. Notably, both of these robes had "heart" decals all over them. The robes were primarily blue, with red hearts in the white lining of the center of it. Around their torsos, tee shirts became red corsets.
At both of their chests, two lumps found themselves forming on each of them, rounding out into a set of breasts. Their hair grew longer, falling behind the back of their heads. On the top of them, a golden crown would materialize. Their eyelashes became longer as their eyebrows became much thinner. Their facial features softened, with adam's apples shrinking down until there was hardly anything left, causing their voices to become high-pitched with a regal flair.
Of course, this wouldn't last, as both of their bodies were flattened against the card. Their depth was rapidly being erased, the three-dimensional beings becoming quite the opposite. Both Nafster and Erakr would have their legs and entire lower body shrink, both their forms stopping slightly below their chest, where they evenly met so that one half of what was left of Erakir was on one end of the card and the other half was Nafster.
Though calling themselves Erakir and Nafster wouldn't be able to be true for long. A face card in the deck was identical, and a moogle and snow leopard were rather different species. Luckily, once they were pressed into the card this would rectify itself.
Erakir's pom pom vanished entirely, as would the wings sticking out of his back. The white fur would darken, heading to the opposite side of the color spectrum, darkening into a midnight black. The whites of his eyes turned yellow, with his pupils becoming more slitted. Erakir's ears shrank in size, though retained their triangular shape. His muzzle grew larger, with a kind of curvature to it to make it a bit more "3" shaped.
Nafster's changes were nearly identical. His circular ears became pointed and the sides became straighter as they took on a more triangular shape. Like Erakir, the whites of his eyes turned yellow with his eyes becoming more slitted. Also like Erakir, his fur would darken, any trace of his former spots gone with the gray fur turning black - the same color of fur that Erakir was. All of that left Nafster identical to the Erakir half of the card - the former moogle and snow leopard turned into regal looking panther women.
Their forms would be locked in place, as their bodies were fully converted into simple ink that was printed on the formerly blank card. It was all blacks, reds, and whites, with their former bodies erased as the ink became dry, printed directly onto the small piece of cardboard as Erakir and Nafster became but a simple "Queen" playing card - with a little flair of a panther woman as opposed to the traditional human ones.
"You two had some good stuff, thank you for your donation~!" Mel cooed as she pocketed the dollar bills inside along with some of the debit and credit cards that seemed like they'd be more valuable than others.
"You two came out pretty good too, so much elegance~! Perhaps we'd be friends if you weren't stuck in a playing card. Ah well, she said with a shrug, tossing it down on the box. "I got what I needed out of you two. I'd say it's been nice but, well, I barely talked to you much. But your money is nice in my pockets, I can probably buy a lot of nice stuff with it! I've been craving some nice new jewelry. I never treat myself like that, I'm sure you royal ladies, or it is just lady - would agree~?" she cooed. "Toodaloo, have fun being a playing card! Maybe someone pick you up and make you a part of their own scam. Some of that three card monte number. It's a bit low-brow for me, I only do the finest of scams~!" she gave a hearty laugh. "I don't know why I'm still talking to you, it's not like you can hear me at all. You're just a playing card now, it's not like they can talk or think." Mel laughed as the chameleon sauntered away with a nice "payday" from Erakir and Nafster.
And so, their fate was sealed. The only person who knew that the playing card was ever Erakir and Nafster was long gone. Mel wasn't exactly someone who stayed in one location for long, nor did she have any interest in reversing the transformation of people she had just stolen from. The chameleon's name wasn't even Mel, and she changed it with each interaction. She continued on with her scamming around the country whereas Erakir and Nafster's fate was much different.
No one knew they were ever anything but a panther playing card - let alone two separate people at some point. So, they were treated just like that - a playing card. For a while, Mel's words did wind up coming true, someone had decided to use them as a part of a three card monte scam, ironically using the very same box that Mel had left them on.
However, this wouldn't stay true for long. Eventually, the person running the scam was caught, taken away with the three cards he was using - Erakir and Nafster included who wound up tossed away in the garbage along with the box. There, the card would stay, victim to the elements. Birds pecking at it, more trash being dumped on it, and going through the lifecycle of trash.
By the time the card had reached a dump, it was irreparably damaged, making the already un-likely to be able to be reversed transformation impossible to do so now - any hope of returning to normal dashed away. Eventually, the card would be torn in half right down the center - Erakir and Nafster finally split again as individuals. Unfortunately, it wasn't as an individual moogle and snow leopard, but a piece of cardboard that was missing its other half. And there they lay, just a part of a dump site - two halves of the same card, and that's where they would remain.
