Sweet Dreaming Escape | Catnap TFTG MC
It was a dark, rainy day. As a result, Alice was spending all her time at home. Though that wasn’t the whole of it though…recently her best friend Joey had been found dead, and he didn’t even look like himself. He ended up looking like a weird bootleg version of Dogday from that old Smiling Critters cartoon…
In a weird mix of nostalgia and sorrow, Alice had been binging the whole series today. Maybe it was just a need for some kind of comfort, maybe the fact Joey was dead and looked like Dogday triggered some kind of response in her…or maybe she felt like watching Smiling Critters and seeing Dogday would make her feel like she was with Joey again…
And earlier that week, in another burst of mania, she’d went on E-Bay and bought an entire box of replica Smiling Critters necklaces.
She needed therapy bad.
Alice had nearly forgotten about the purchase as she laid on her couch and watched the show while covered in blankets. She Jumped in startlement once she heard the knock on her door, and slowly and begrudgingly got up and answered it, only to find nobody…though the box of necklaces was slapped right on her doorstep, getting pelted by the rain.
In a panic, Alice grabbed the box and quickly brought it in, and as the opening theme for the next episode came to an end, she opened up the box, being greeted with…exactly what the advertisement said; full scale replicas of the Smiling Critter’s necklaces…
Alice rifled through them, getting a feel for each necklace in her hand. Eventually her eyes would be drawn to one specific necklace…that being the crescent moon. Catnap’s necklace.
Catnap was always Alice’s favorite character back in the day…it tore her heart up when he eventually got removed. It was then that her attention was suddenly drawn back to the TV, as she had heard one of the characters mention Catnap’s name. She smiled a bit as she saw the purple cat walk on screen. She then watched the episode absentmindedly for a while, remembering one of the show’s main running gags as it played out on screen; that being every time Catnap tried to talk, he would be immediately interrupted by something. In this scenario, it was Hoppy Hopscotch kicking a soccer ball into his head by accident, which ended up knocking him out. (Complete with swirly pupils and birds tweeting around his head.)
Alice snickered lightly as she watched it go down. The show as a whole wasn’t as funny as she remembered it being, but she supposed that was just a side effect of growing up. She then ended up recalling another memory. She remembered how she and Joey would end up roleplaying as the Smiling Critters on the playground in Second Grade, and how the other kids would just kind of avoid them during it. (Although one kid named Jeremy would occasionally join in as Kickin Chicken.) Alice remembered how she would typically be Catnap (big fucking shock, right?) and Joey would be Dogday…
Her thoughts were once again drawn to the fact that Joey was no longer with her…the fact that she’d never see him again…the fact that he was just like the character he always loved when he died. It was all like sick joke that no one was laughing at.
Alice let out a bloodcurdling scream and grabbed the box and slung it at the tv, sending the necklaces everywhere and knocking the tv over. Right as another bit of dialogue could be heard from Dogday…
“I’m so happy you’re okay, Catnap! Don’t ever leave me like that again, okay? Let’s be friends forever!”
Alice began to fully cry at that point. A sick fucking joke. That’s all this was. A sick, ironic comedy, written by some sadistic cunt who only knew how to make people suffer.
Alice had no idea how long she cried for…but it felt like hours. The only thing she knew for sure was that the ending theme for the show played at least twice…
Eventually she got back up after successfully calming herself down…but she didn’t feel any more cheered up. She sighed and set the tv back up. Somehow it hadn’t received any damage…Alice supposed that was a plus of the necklaces all being made out of cheap plastic.
Speaking of the necklaces, Alice figured she’d better put them back in the box, and began gathering them all back up…eventually she picked up Catnap’s necklace once again…she couldn’t bring herself to put it back in the box.
She sat back own on the couch, leaning her head into her left hand and messing with the necklace in the other. She once again began to recall the days where she and Joey would roleplay on the playground…She remembered they each even made replica necklaces out of string and paper. Alice at this point felt like she could and would give anything just to relieve those days…to not just feel miserable all the time and actually look forward to the next day…
At that moment, Alice fully put the necklace on, and it’s centerpiece rested against her collarbone…maybe it would bring some kind of comfort to her as she wore it.
But as soon as she slipped it on…something odd began to happen immediately.
The necklace seemingly began to glow, and shift into new, better material, going from plastic from to some sort of gem…
“Wh-What the fuck-?” Alice mumbled as she watched the necklace glow, and as it did, a thick layer of purple fur began to sprout from where the moon was resting, and started spreading upwards and downwards. It felt like her skin was being replaced with a soft and comfy blanket as her skin was quickly covered with the fur.
She shot to her feet and began to examine her changing self…that shade of purple…no way…! It couldn’t be! She knew she should probably be scared and worried bout what was happening to her…but it was Catnap! She was becoming Catnap! She had to be!
Her nose twitched and shrunk back, then proceeded to widen a bit. She expected it to hurt a lot, but instead it felt like a moderate tickling sensation. And once it was finished widening, it turned completely black. The changes to her nose were then followed up by her upper lips splitting up from the center. Again, she expected it to hurt, but any pain that should result from such a change was seemingly nullified.
Another change would hit her as her hears began to tickle next. They soon began to lose their thickness towards the tops, which were quickly shifting towards a more triangular shape. The feeling this gave Alice was hard to describe…it felt like a really deep haircut…that also cut the skin and muscle away…Nevermind, that wasn’t a good descriptor.
Though even though her ears were much thinner now, Alice found that she could move them around with a lot more control than her human ears…
“Th-This is amazing…!” Alice exclaimed with joy, and right after she did so, her mind began to feel a rather fuzzy, and she nearly fell over as a result. She made a sound that was a mixture of a groan and a meow, and began to rub her head in discomfort. It was then that she noticed the fur on her hands and feet beginning to shift to a much darker shade of purple.
And speaking of her feet, they began to feel somewhat heavy…Alice looked down to see her toes beginning to fuse into each other, becoming three instead of five. Her feet then began to lengthen in general, and her toenails began to shrink, yet become sharper, essentially turning her feet into paws.
Alice…Catnap…-they couldn’t quite tell at the moment- fully fell over at this point. Their head was so foggy they could barely comprehend the tail growing out of their back and wrapping around their left leg.
“Eh…? O-Oh…my uh…t-tail’s back…c-cool…” Alice mumbled dreamily. Their voice really didn’t sound like hers at this point. It sounded a bit deeper, and more absentminded and detached…and wait…
“W-Wait…’my’ tail…? B-but I um…I don’t have a uh…” Alice never had a tail…what did she mean ‘it was back’? Catnap may have had a tail…but not her…unless…
Catnap began to shake his head as he stood back up, Alice’s clothes vanishing…Meanwhile Alice herself -in terms of identity- comfortably slunk to the back of Catnap’s mind.
Catnap looked over to the tv for a moment, taking a moment to pat himself on the back for how good that show was despite his considerably lesser presence in it, then he looked to the box filled with his friends’ necklaces…He then had an idea; if putting his necklace on brought him back out…maybe getting other people to wear these necklaces would bring his friends back too!
Catnap let out a slight snicker at his idea…but he was really sleepy. He’d have to put this into action after a nice nap. And after curling up on the couch…Catnap began to realize something…
The person he was before donning his necklace, Alice, was still there…she was dormant in a way, resting in his head…and Catnap slowly began to realize Alice’s memories, and that’s when Catnap gained the memories of how awful Alice had been feeling lately…
As he fell asleep, Catnap only hoped that being dormant like that would serve as some sort of vacation for her…and that bringing his friends back would provide the same for others.
