Positive memories from my childhood are pretty rare, but a time I'll always cherish is from 02 to 04. My family had moved us out of my grandpa's trailer into some really really nice hilltop apartments. Never knew how we afforded it (maybe we didn't, we were only there a few years). Kinda woodsy, surrounded by enough trees and ponds to feel like your own little area of the world, but with civilization visible and nearby. Things were stable and I was running off outside everyday.
Best part was this little community area built right halfway up the hills. An entire house converted to a community office, next to a pool area, connected via bridge over a large pond to a playground and tennis court area, all nestled in a little valley between the various apartments. It was all breezy and green. Perfect when sunny, even more perfect in the rain.
I'm an adult capable of managing my own environment now, and with that control I've managed to live life better than I ever did as a kid, but even now I still miss that place. Or is it moreso that I miss the vibes of that time? That stability? Those apartments still exist, but people actively using a community hub seems like such a foreign idea. But that's just me getting into the, "phones and tiktok bad rawwgh" mindset.
Sometimes I dream of places like it. It always feels like I've been taken to another world entirely, one where the things I see might not make sense, but have an inviting warmth to them regardless.
I asked brynnstic to capture this feeling and he could not have hit the mark any closer. Ruby's just slipped into the foggy, rainy morning of a dream of a place that once existed, even if only in her mind. I love it.
Please go check out his work!
