But people after all... Start out as being small...
...And we're all a Nutty Little Boy...
The chain of cartoonist tragedies has claimed another life. First Toryama, and now Ziraldo, one of the most influential comic creators of Brazil. Amongst his mutliple creations, such as Pererê, Chapeuzinho Amarelo, Flicts... We have the boy that is practically not just his mascot, but he's a little bit of every child in Brazil:
O Menino Maluquinho, A.K.A. The Nutty Boy. Recently gained more traction around the world thanks to the Netflix animated series.
I already had made a Goku card when Toryama-san's passing was announced, but I didn't have one for Maluquinho, so I set out to make this, with all the caution not to make it look rushed. Just read the news, just told my mother, she was also devastated.
When I was a kid, her boss got me a magazine with the author's autograph. "Viva o Daniel!" (Hooray for Daniel) it said, alongside his name. I never met him in person, and I don't think I have the magazine anymore, but how could I forget such a moment in my life?
The title is a modified version of rod McKuen's A Boy Named Charlie Brown, which in a way, also fits the overall theme of childhood that Maluquinho had, has and always will have. And as Ziraldo said in the first book featuring the character:
"That's when everybody realized he wasn't a nutty boy. He was a happy boy."
Rest in Peace, Ziraldo Alves Pinto. 1932-2024.
