In the blue, cloudless sky of Switzerland, a little girl named Clarissa plays in the forest. Cupping her hand to gaze up at the bluebirds flying above, and observing squirrels climbing up trees, she spots a furry blob in the distance. Curious, she slowly approaches the furry blob on the dirt path; but this isn't just any blob, it's a wolf pup on the brink of death. Clarissa carefully brings water in one hand and berries in the other, feeding the wolf pup. As it eats and drinks, the wolf's eyes open, looking up at Clarissa. Licking its lips, the wolf slowly gets onto its paws and licks Clarissa's cheek.
Under the sprawling cloudy sky, a house resides at the edge of town where Clarissa's father, Theodosius Heidenstam, and mother, Amadea Heidenstam, pack up a basket full of food for a picnic. "Little Clair, could you carry the blanket for me?" says Theodosius, grabbing the basket and water pail. "Okay, father," Clarissa replies, grabbing the blanket and heading out the door.
Arriving at the spot where Clarissa was yesterday, her father and mother set up a place for their picnic. Clarissa runs off into the woods without a care in the world. Theodosius grabs the pail by the basket while Amadea opens the basket lid, preparing lunch for everyone. Amadea hears a strange noise coming from the forest but pays it no attention, thinking it's Clarissa playing a prank. As heavy breathing draws closer, Amadea, still oblivious, assumes Theodosius is in on the act too. About to grab cheese from the basket, Amadea lets out a horrible scream, alarming Theodosius, who quickly returns to the scene. The wolf backs away unharmed, but Theodosius rushes past Amadea, furiously placing the water pail on the blanket and searching the basket for a knife. As their eyes lock, Theodosius raises the knife above his head, ready to strike. Dodging the blade, Clarissa emerges from the forest.
