The Oceanids are one of the 7 races of the land (or rather the seas) of Skallia, they are an aquatic race capable of breathing in both air and water, however their anatomy prevents them from treading land unlike their cousins the Ophidians.
Little is known about Oceanid cities and architecture given that no expedition from the academy has taken place to one of them, even so we still know a bit about their culture from direct accounts of individuals from the Oceanid community situated in the city of Oscor. This is thanks to the city accomodating for oceanids with recently dug canals in the lower parts of town, allowing access to Oceanids to multiple buildings.
Their culture is mostly centered around grace and daintyness, a reflection of a ''going with the flow'' mindset, they are also very active in trading with the rest of the land, mostly proving rare corals and pearls as well as more common items such as sponges and crustaceans. Some adventurous Oceanids even forming groups to recover cargo from sunken ships.
The Oceanids are able to speak common given the presence of lungs and vocal chords in addition to their gills, but they also have a complex underwater language comprised of sign, facial expressions and subtle body movements. Non-Oceanid linguists from the Udral academy have tried learning the language but have proved unsuccessful given the specifity of the environment and appendages required for communication.
The Oceanids had no direct involvement in the war, considering the fact that the conflict mostly took place on dry land. However they did aid in cargo and weapon transport via the shores to troops of the then princess of Oscor during the assault on Esian territories. Following the massacre that occurred in the capital, the Oceanids were seen as responsible for the bloodbath that ensued although no one could have predicted the actions of the princess that day, the Esnians have long considered the Oceanids to have the blood of the capital on their hands. This has led to racial tensions in the capital until the signing of the grand peace treaty. Nevertheless these old frictions have still left their marks in the present day.
The god of the Oceanids; Abam, is said to reside in the deepest parts of the ocean, where few are capable of swimming and returning, those who are brave enough to take on the journey, and resilient enough to come back are deemed ''oracles'', a high religious rank in Oceanid society, and will make the journey many times in their lives, to go and ask for protection, wisdom or propecies from the god of the depths.
