In the Wastelands, there have been many stories of Deathclaws that had a great deal more intelligence than the already deadly and cunning apex predator typically shows. One of these stories involved a Brotherhood of Steel patrol that had been picked off by one, a Knight included who's only remains were a torn open suit of power armor and what seemed to be his corpse nearby.
In truth, Knight Owen had managed to slay the beast that killed his comrades, but being exposed to the beast’s blood and saliva in the battle mixing into his wounds, an unheard-of change began to occur due to a special mutation within this particular Deathclaw. The next few days he went through an agonizing ordeal, fighting off the instincts that came with his body growing in size, skin replaced with scales, a tail growing along with some of his digits fusing and horns growing out of his head.
Knowing he'd not be accepted by his former allies and fearing the mutation making him a danger, he debated taking his own life, but the desire to survive that had been burned into every Wastelander’s heart spurred him onward. He had to spend weeks fighting to solidify his sanity, and eventually his rational mind won and he knew he had to live in the wilderness, fearful of both his new body and of being slain for what had become of him.... To his relief however, the Brotherhood never came, and he realized between his discarded power armor and the violent nature of his change leaving enough of his human body behind must have made them draw the conclusion he was dead.
Perhaps he could indirectly aid settlements from a distance by hunting raiders? As he got comfortable with his new form and confident in his sentience remaining intact, he settled into an abandoned garment factory and practiced with the materials he could to eventually make himself a set of garments...perhaps to establish he was not a mindless beast to any who would notice. With his acceptance of now being a mutant, he distanced himself from the world and his former allegiance’s goals to hoard and safeguard the technology of the old world.
Now he had to survive, and hopefully make a net positive in his surroundings.
Aaaand because I was playing some Fallout game for a friend and my Boyfriend on separate occasions as they were both curious about the series before the show was announced, I had the brainrot for a Deathclaw, and was looking for one for about a year or two now to pick up or get custom. About two weeks ago, I stumbled across this handsome lad and Vel didn't want to risk me losing out on him....so we co-own this boy! The jumpsuit, bomber jacket, goggles and Minigun gave me vibes of the BoS in 4, so decided to be a little tongue-in-cheek with a callback to the sentient and talking Deathclaws of 2 and nod towards the legendary enemies' mutations in 4 to make him go from BoS to giant death lizard.
Hope you all enjoy!
