Sully has a life outside that burrow, you know.
In fact, lately he's received overtures from big tech companies and university research departments who seem interested in the things he's designed. One of them even sponsored a ticket to the big Science Expo that was being held that year in Badlands City, Colorado.
He informed Emmet of none of this, of course. He merely told his boss that he was going off on vacation, and the wombat just grunted in response. It wasn't a lie—Sully was planning on taking a few days after the expo to go exploring in the mountains, go hiking or kayaking or something. The poor ferret had gotten so little time to himself that even the change of scenery would be very welcome.
But on the very day the convention opened, disaster struck.
Civil unrest, violence and chaos in the streets! Sully could only piece together the situation from snippets of TV and news alerts on his phone, as well as mutterings he overheard from the terrified citizens surrounding him: the bioterrorist had struck again, the police were corrupt and targeting civilians instead of the real criminals, no one was safe and everyone had to fend for themselves.
This was... not something for him to get mixed up in and his only priority now was getting out of BC and getting home. Easier said than done. Transport hubs were in the same state of disarray as the rest of the city. You couldn't even get a bus ticket out of town!
And meanwhile a different clock was ticking: Sully's bank account. He hadn't planned for an extended stay and before long he'd be out of money with nowhere to go. The streets here were not a safe place to be, and if he didn't find a way to drum up some cash fast he'd be sleeping in them.
That was when he happened to cross paths with a very peculiar fellow.

Austin, like Sully, was in an unenviable situation.
The bulldog was a former officer of the BCSD turned lone vigilante—the type who fights for justice while standing on the wrong side of the law. He had made tremendous strides in investigating the crimes of both his former department and the masked stranger known only as "the Wendigo", but his steady encroaching into their respective domains meant that many pairs of eyes were watching his every move.
Exactly how Austin met Sully is a matter they'd both like to keep under wraps. But seeing as Sully was a genius inventor who could build anything out of anything (and needed money), and Austin had a strong need to evade surveillance (and had money), an impromptu working partnership befit them both.
Way out in the mountains on the far side of Barren Valley, the bulldog had a remote hideout, an abandoned barn to serve as a makeshift workshop, a ratty old 1970 chevy, and enough spare parts and junk lying around for Sully to make something that would blow out the electronics of all that pesky surveillance when Austin passed through.
But it seems like Austin is running out of patience for Sully to finish his end of the deal...

well, now thats something for a change...I like it!! Is so nice to see them doing some "normal" life stuff outside the burrow, pretty refreshing, more anthropomorphic Sully looks cute too and the colors and background are so neat! ^^
evade surveillance????? DID I HEAR THAT RIGHT? Lemme go check the bounty bullitin boards
I wonder how this scenario will end. :3
Poor sully getting into this kind of situations ;-;

Sully's getting one-note. His default scenario seems to be "disappointing the boss."
We'll have to give him the opportunity to save the day for a change.
