Hardtack is a long lasting baked food made of flour, salt and water. Though usually tasteless and notoriously hard, it is favored by soldiers, explorers and sailors for it's longevity, able to keep for periods of over 25 years.
Though they can be softened up when dipped in water, they can prove to be quite challenging to consume for someone not prepared for such a tough biscuit as it, particularly if they happen to live in a world where incredibly dry food is next to impossible to come by.

I can relate. I tried that stuff on a high school trip to Gettysburg. Not good, even with the peanut soup! (Which was actually not bad. The trip itself wasn't bad, though I felt like a friggin' zombie that morning.)
