This was a piece drawn by the amazing Dragonsponies! He was a joy to work with on this and it also has a story attached to it as a bonus! Hope you enjoy.
Crow had spent almost a thousand years in exile, now upon her return she found that most portraits of the ancient animus princess had been lost to the ages. The few that remained were locked away in her sister’s private collection, out of the public eye. As a result, it seemed most Nightwings had forgotten about their other princess— not that it surprised her.
It was rough.. constantly seeing how mothers ushered their dragonets past her, how entire rooms went quiet with her mere presence, the endless stares…
Fortunately, Crow had just the thing in mind. Whilst her tendency to scowl didn’t help her image, maybe if their subjects could see her in a light as regal and glorious as her sister then maybe— just maybe— it would be enough to shift some views of her.
Unfortunately, finding an artist to actually paint proved to be a pain in the tail. Sure! Mention the mighty Queen Raven commissioning a personal piece, and the artists practically lined up at the door. But the moment it became clear the subject was her younger sister, suddenly everyone was either “too busy” or “closed for the time.”
Tsk.. Fine. It’s not like she needed any of them.
What she needed was someone who had an eye for true beauty, someone that could see her for who she truly was!
Her search eventually led her to a rainwing artist named Fern. Crow was initially nervous and apprehensive, but the Rainwing welcomed her warmly enough. Finally, someone who wasn’t terrified of her! Better yet, he agreed to take her commission right then and there! Crow could hardly contain her excitement, so much so that she didn’t bother to read through the terms of service he provided.
Hours of sitting awkwardly in place passed, Crow couldn’t believe her eyes. It was everything she had imagined and more. She was gorgeous.
She wanted to thank Fern a million times over—only to realize she hadn’t asked how much the piece would cost. When she offered gold as payment, Fern kindly declined. Instead, with his paint-stained claw, he tapped the contract she had signed…
