Makoa was just your typical otter. A bright little social butterfly and a notorious flirt. He loved being outdoors, living in a tropical paradise; he often found himself at the beach, in rivers, streams, or playing outside ever since he was young. Curiously exploring every nook and cranny of the island he called home. While not getting the hang of surfing he did learn: paddle board, deep sea dive, scuba, hula, and even was taught the fire knives. Makoa lived quite an interesting life.
It was just a typical Friday, Makoa was out in the water feeling the crisp cool waters race through his fur. He was swimming back up, breaking the surface. Makoa filled his lungs with as much air as he could manage. Thinking to himself how “this used to be so much easier,”
Swimming for the shore, Makoa let himself be pushed in by the rolling waves crashing into the shore. Once one of his toes could touch the sand Makoa started to walk out of the shore break. Makoa was usually a very thin otter, but now his frame had become far more meatier. No doubt thanks to the very prominent orb hanging on his midsection.
Huffing slightly as he trekked through the sand and the ocean. Stomping up to a little beach stand. Inside was a towering bull working in it.
“So what’d I miss?” Makoa asked
“Couple directions, asked about pricing. Nothing Majah,” the bull replied
Makoa chuckled “Business as usual,” he said shrugging his shoulders slightly
Going to the back of the stall Makoa pulled out a towel from inside the stand. He knew his way around it mostly because this was where he worked. Makoa worked for a small Beach Boy company, doing beach chair and umbrella rentals, surf and paddle rentals, and offering lessons to tourists and locals alike. It wasn’t luxurious work but Makoa enjoyed it. Working there allowed him to be out in the sun all day at the beach. Plus, in a manner, he got to meet all kinds of new and interesting anthros like himself including a certain chubby panther who just so happened to be visiting and the father of his child.
“How’s the kid?” the bull asked
“Good doc says he’s already nine pounds,” Makaoa answered
“Oh Damn,” the bull replied
Makoa assured his bull co-worker that the baby wasn’t coming for a little while at least. He still had a couple more weeks till his estimated due date. Explaining this while he continued to dry himself off.
“Hey thanks for swapping with me,” Makoa said
“No prob,” the bull replied “Why’d you wanna trade anyways? You nevah said,”
“My kumu asked to perform tonight for that Luau da Hotels put on,” Makoa answered plainly.
“For real?” the bull’s eyes looked Makoa up and down “Has he seen you. Like dis?” he said pointing at Makoa
“Yes you fukah,” Makoa shot back with a laugh
The two often shot jabs at one another playfully whenever they’d be on the same shift. Makoa went on to explain he wanted the extra time to get ready, eat, stretch, and practice a little bit, something the bull understood. Makia had five hours before he needed to be present at the hotel for the start of the luau held at the Hana Hotel every Friday. Leaving that stretch of beach he knew where he wanted to eat.
Walking off the beach Makoa stepped right off the sidewalk of a bustling city. The road is lined with hotels, expensive chain stores, designer boutiques, and overpriced coffee. Makoa carefully weaved in between the crowd, crossing several blocks before finally coming to it. A little venue that served udon with tempura sides. Just the thing he enjoyed after the beach. It was also one of the cheapest places to eat in the city and very delicious.
Makoa had ordered the largest bowl he could, a nice hearty broth with all the fixings, with a little extra, and grabbed a few pieces of tempura. It was quite a good amount only setting him back less than twenty dollars. Picked out an empty spot, set his things down, and was good to eat. The broth was nice and hot, he could feel the heat radiating from it as he lowered his face getting that first bite of udon in.
Slurping up the noodles he could taste the chives that clung to the noodles. He started to feel an instant reaction covering his face. He had spaced on the fact that the baby hated chives. Swallowing that first bite almost made his stomach feel even worse. With his paw over his mouth, he muttered looking at his bump, “Let me enjoy this and I promise I’ll get those malasadas you like so much,”
His stomach didn’t fully settle but at least he was able to stomach another bite, even sip some of the broth latten with chives. Loudly slurping up every morsel of food in his bowl, even dipping his tempura in the broth to give him a nice combination of flavors. The more he ate the less queasy he felt. He kinda liked being able to negotiate with his kid at times and found it to be so cute. Guzzling down the last of the broth Makoa felt a warmth wash over his insides feeling wonderfully content from the meal.
Once he cleaned up, sent back his dishes, and gathered his things he needed to make a detour. Patting his pregnant belly and saying a promise is a promise. Time for a detour. A black over there was a newly built outdoor mall. He knew a place in the mall selling just the malasadas he was craving. It paid to have friends working there. Once he entered the mall grounds, it was a quick waddle through the courtyard, up the elevator, and back around and over to it. The place was Uncle Teddy’s Bakery. Makoa could smell the aroma of confectionary delights as he opened the door. Ever since the start of his second trimester Makoa had dreamed about walking in there and ordering out their entire stock for the day.
“Hey Koa!” a nice mongoose girl called out
“Hey Ui!” he replied
The name of this mongoose behind the counter was Kaui, a good friend of Makoa’s. “I got your order,” Kauai said to him
Looking a bit confused, “I haven’t ordered anything yet,” Makoa told her
“I had a feeling you’d be coming by today,” Kauai told him “Plus you’ve been coming in for the last six months and getting the same thing for that guy,” Kauai said pointing at Makoa’s pregnant belly
Makoa laughed nervously “I guess I do order it a lot,”
“Cha,” Kaui said as she went in back.
While Makoa waited, he got a good look at some of the other pastries in their case. It all looked so good, he bet they tasted even better. Macaroons, pies, even cake slices he wished he could afford them all. Kaui wasn’t gone for long coming back out with a box already bagged with a little note with his name on it. Kauai set it on the counter and started to ring him up. Makoa went into his back and grabbed his wallet. The two continued their conversation as the transaction took place.
“Break from work?” Kauai asked
“No, I’m pau. I’m performing tonight,” Makoa told her
Kaui sounded curious “Wha-Where at?”
“Hana Towers Luau. Makoa kindly replied
“Eh?” Kaui looked at him with a raised eyebrow, with a hint of disgust on her face
“I know they called Kumu Valdez and asked if he could perform tonight. Guessing most of the hotel's performers are out.” He told Kaui
“Oh okay. So you gonna be shaking those hips?” she asked him as she shook her hips at him
“Well… Kumu asked me if I could do the fire knives tonight as part of the show.”
“Shut up!” Kauai said as she took the card out of her machine
Makoa just laughed at her, “What?”
“Okay,” Kauai put her paws together, “I love you. I’m happy you get to dance but seriously. He’s gonna have you, a pregnant otter, do a fire knife number?”
“Well, he had Bishop doing it. But he kind of fell apart,” Makoa seemed to say with an unsure inflection
“Fell apart how? With stage fright?” Kauai asked handing Makia back his bank card
“Ugh no. He sprained his ankle. Miss judged his footing and fell right onto his lit knife. SInged off a good chunk of hair and got some first-degree burns,”
Kauai was in shock, “Jesus,”
“Yeah so,” Makoa said, “Kumu asked me to do it. He’s not making me da spit fire. And He said I could take it a little easy on the count of baby.”
Kauai shrugged it off, “Well, I guess that’s better than you being forced to do it.”
Makoa jokingly told her it wasn’t going to be that big of an inconvenience. He had everything with him and was going to go do some stretches and practice a little before tonight. Kauai remarked how it was good he’d be doing that and like many others, getting a good amount of exercise during his pregnancy was good for him. Kaui said how she was worried he might be too acrobatic, “It’s a baby, not a magic 8-ball,”
Makoa got a good laugh out of it. Grabbing his order off the counter.
“Oh!” Kauai shot up, “I gave you a little extra. There’s some sakura and red bean mochi in there for ya,”
“Seriously?” Makoa asked “You didn’t have to do that,”
Kauai gave a dismissive gesture about it. It wasn’t a big deal to her. Just some extra that they made today.
“We should get together for lunch again,” Makoa said
Kaui nodded, “sure, call me,”
Makoa agreed, expressing how grateful he was to her as he walked out into the mall. He went by a few stores. Walking by one of the little stores, Keiki Street. A little ship filled to the brim with clothes for infants, toddlers, and children as young as five. A couple of outfits caught his eye as he looked through the window. Another little distraction. Right in the front was the newborn infant's section. Spotting a cute little onesie a light blue color with a cute little hibiscus print, “Oh that’s cut,” he thought to himself
A red panda came up beside him “Hey Koa!”
“Oh Hi Abby,” Makoa said
“Do you like that one?” Abby asked him
“It’s cute. But I have so many newborn clothes already,” Makoa admitted
“Well, we have more options in the same color and pattern in the one to two-year sizes,” Abby told him
“Really?” Makoa asked in curiosity
The two of them walked over, Abby leading the way having stocked that section herself. Exchanging the usual exchange of how each one was doing. Makoa asked her how she and her boyfriend were doing. Abby groaned, rolling her eyes in a rather annoyed manner. It was all the hint Makoa needed to know that he was in hot water. “Ah, nevermind,” Makoa remarked with a nervous chuckle
With a hard exhale, Abby inspected the area, “Let's see… Here it is,”
Abby pulled a little shirt with the same hibiscus pattern paired with a pair of khakis.
“Aww,” Makoa let out reaching for the outfit, “That’s cute,”
Abby started to talk to Makoa about some of the other outfits. Each of the shirts was interchangeable with some of their new khakis and shorts, and shoes to make different combinations of outfits. Makoa of course asked about some of the styles and shirts that they had in stock. The conversation went on for several minutes. Finally being put to an end by a powerful kick to his stomach. Causing Makoa to groan loudly.
“I think the little guy wants me to hurry up,” Makoa said in a hoarse manner
“Oh no,” Abby let out, “Are you okay?”
I’m fine,” Makoa said, taking a nice deep inhale, “I promised him some malasadas if he let me keep lunch down. Guess this is his way of saying he wants them now,”
Abby had a little laugh. Telling him she’d put a few outfits on hold for him and have him check them by another day. He thanked her warmly as he waddled out of the store.
Now out, there was a bench just past Keiki Street away from the flow of the mall traffic. He set everything down and carefully lowered himself down for a nice seat. Going through the plastic bag he pulled out the little plastic mochi containers and went right to the malasadas. Makoa usually ordered a half dozen, since he often wasn’t sure he could finish off a dozen even with how much his baby liked them. Makoa took a huge bite out of it.
He could taste the sugar and the lemon marang custard filling, a cute little squeak left his mouth as he felt a wave of euphoria wash over him. Makoa could feel his little boy fluttering inside of him happy to finally have a promised treat. Makoa traced his hand over his belly taking another big bite.
“Mommy! Mommy! I want Malasadas too!” A little rat girl said pointing at Makoa
“Later sweetie,” her mom said to her “And it’s not polite to point,” she said to her daughter
“Can I ask him for one?” the little rat girl asked loudly
“No sweetie, those are his,” The rat mom mouthed softly at Makoa “Sorry”
Makoa smiled a single gesture to assure her that it was alright.
“But mommy he’s so fat! He should be able to share some,”
Makoa was instantly shocked. The rat mom had a sudden gasp of shock, trying to swipe at her daughter's head, “Don’t you say something like that! Apologize to the nice man!”
“It’s alright,” Makoa said forcing a smile, holding back his irritation
The little rat girl looked right at Makoa, pointing at his belly. No double she was about to say something again. Whether it was luck or just perfectly timed, Makoa felt his baby give a nice big movement. Pushing out a portion of his body and trailing up his stomach in a distorted way. It felt like the baby shifted their position and pushed their foot out. But that little rat girl let out a mortified scream as she hid behind her mom.
Screaming “The fat guy ate someone!!”
The mother was now mortified, as everyone was staring at them. She grabbed her daughter by the hand and forced her to move away, rumbling at her to “Knock it off!”
Makoa felt rather pleased with how that kinda ended. Rubbing his belly “Not even out yet and already such a good boy,” he said softly to his baby bump
Makoa had a couple more malasadas reclining back and patting his pregnant belly. He had a few people staring at him as they walked by. But for him, it didn’t matter. He was happy, his baby was happy, and the malasadas were delicious. He usually didn’t eat this much. Makoa was quite surprised he was able to put away that much. After a large portion of udon and now three malasadas down, grabbing the fourth showing no sign of being stuffed yet. Makoa managed to already eat five, with just one more sitting all lonesome in the box.
Putting the mochi containers in his bag, taking out the last malasada, and throwing the box away, it was time for Makoa to get moving again. He’d eat that last one as he walked out of the mall. On the escalator heading back down to the ground floor, he managed to finish it off, licking the sugar off his beans. Makoa savored the taste with a happy little squeak.
Waiting to cross the street he knew the fastest way over to the park was to go up along the beach and over till he reached the aquarium where there was a little park out in front. Well, maybe not the fastest but certainly the more scenic. While he waited to cross the street he heard a voice asking him, “When are you due?”
Makoa turned and saw it was an old boar asking, “Couple more weeks,” Makoa said with a smile.
“That’s nice,” the old boar said, “You remind me of my grandson, he just had a baby too…”
“Did he?” Makoa said back to the old boar. Makoa felt the old boar just wanted someone to talk to.
“Boy or girl?” the old boar asked looking at Makoa
Makoa smiled brightly with a chipper tone in his voice, “Boy,”
The old boar smiled at Makoa. The signal ticked loudly, altering everyone that it had changed. The kind old boar gave a gentle goodbye as he went in the opposite direction from Makoa.
A couple more lights and he was walking along the beach again. Youthful singles, couples sunbathing, and even families playing with their kids in the sand. The sight made Makoa a little emotional as he tried to picture what it might be like once his son was born. It would be maybe a year or two before the little panther/otter hybrid running around could play in the sand on their own. Wondering if they’d be curious or brave. Then his mind lingered on that chubby panther, Makoa wished he’d answer his messages. He wanted to at least let him know that he had a kid out here on the island.
Feeling a little beagle bump into his side was enough to snap him out of his mental trance. The parents apologized profusely at Makoa, but he said it was his fault “It’s what I get for not paying attention,”
Makoa could see the park ahead of him. It was a nice little place that wrapped around the entrance to the aquarium. There was a big Banyan tree near the center of the park. Makoa liked going there and sitting on some of the lower-hanging branches. He was here a few weeks ago doing just that for a quaint little maternity shoot.
He picked a spot with plenty of shade and grass. Setting his bag down. Makoa started with a nice deep breath before going into a few side stretches. He wanted to get himself nice and limber. His usual movements when he’d perform with the fire knife weren’t drastic but he still needed to be a little quick with some of his movements.
Opening his bag he pulled out a singular practice fire knife. It looked similar to a baton with a thicker grip, with one end a longer padded cylindrical piece to represent the knife portion of the real thing. A small one at the bottom to represent the counterweight. He held it in his hand, covered in tape to give him a good grip. Spreading his legs and adjusting his pants to give him a good partial squat. He held the practice knife in front of him with his right hand extended outward. The back of his hand facing the ground.
He held it parallel to him, lowering his hand gently, and then flung his practice knife up into the air. He watched it begin to arch behind him too far for him to reach on his own, Even if he tried to reach for it. “Oh great,” he muttered to himself trying to squat down to pick it up
Makoa tried a couple more times. Tossing it too high it would arch too far behind him and be out of reach for him to grab it. If he tossed it too low he would most likely burn himself if he missed catching it. A couple more attempts, trying to get it at a good enough height between the two extremes. Catching it a couple of times to show he could still catch it.
“Shoots! That’s a good one Koa,” a young man’s voice spoke out
Makoa recognized the voice as an old crush of his. Part of a set of twins whom he was infatuated with before, the twin rottweilers Kawika and Keone. In front of him was Kawika, a nice hunky body with a little amount of meat on him giving him a kind of chunky muscle look.
“Ka-Kawika!” Makoa said looking over his shoulder feeling instantly flustered
“Brah! You still no can tell us apart?” The rottweiler answered back
“Wha- of course, I can.” Makoa pointed at Kawika
“Nah!” the rottweiler said to Makoa “Not so akamai, no more,”
“Keone has a notch cut out of his left ear from that fight he got into during our sophomore year. And well you don’t have that, Kawaika” Makoa said rather bratty at him
“Fuccah. I was hoping to get you with that one,” Kawika said
“Howzit Kawika,” Makoa said turning around to face him
“How-Whoa!” Spotting the orb of a pregnant belly Makoa had “What’s dat!?” Kawika asked pointing at Makoa’s pregnant belly
“Just a,” Makoa struggled “Little souvenir from a tourist,”
“Whoa damn, so you’re single?”
“Ye-yeah,” Makoa laughed nervously
Kawika acted slyly asking “So what you doing baby girl?”
Makoa stammered on his words.
“Oh come on, we both know he liked me more,” A voice like Kawika’s said loudly coming up behind Kawika
“Keone!” Makoa said with a surprise
True to what he had mentioned, there was a notch cut out of Keone’s left ear. Keone had the same reaction seeing Makoa’s pregnant figure, “He-oh fuck! What’s dis?”
Makoa didn’t know what to say. Now suddenly sandwiched between the identical twins who once had a crush on at one time or another. Neither one was all that shy about touching Makoa’s belly. Their paws lifted Makoa’s shirt and running their fingers between the otter’s fur. Makoa could feel his face burning up, “Um hey, ugh… guys,”
“What’s wrong Koa?” Keone asked
“Don’t like dis?” Kawika brought up
“Don’t it feel nice,” Keone’s voice said smooth
“It… it feels nice, I just, practice, hands,” Makoa was stammering
Kawika and Keone gave Makoa some nice deep belly rubs. Makoa was enjoying them rubbing his pregnant belly. They felt so nice.
“Stop, I need to practice,” Makoa said putting his foot down
Keone and Kawika teased him a little about being a pregnant otter doing a fire dance. Makoa stuck out his tongue at them, “I'll be fine, I'm not that rusty,”
“Show us a Vili,” Keone said to Makoa
Makoa responded with a fast spin between his two hands. The brothers nodded like they were impressed. Makoa stuck out his tongue at them.
Makoa stopped for a moment pulling a water bottle out of his bag. Being nosey Keone started to poke around pulling out the red bean mochi, “Hey yo, what's dis?”
“It's red bean mochi, it's really good,” Makoa said
“Shoots” Keone let out
Keone took out one and took a bite. Shrugging as if to say it's not bad. Handing It over to Kawika who took a piece and liked it. Makoa took it and had a piece himself. After swallowing Makoa paused for a moment, placing his Hand on his pregnant belly. The brothers could see Makoa’s belly move slightly.
“Oh shit, little guy?” Kawika asked
“Yeah, he always gets so playful when I have mochi,” Makoa replied
Keone came close “I gotta feel,”
Kawika wasn’t far behind his brother. The twins put a hand each on Makoa's belly, the two brothers making all kinds of noise as they felt the baby moving inside of Makoa.
Kawika asked, “Isn't that weird?”
“Used to small kine. I'm pretty used to it,”
Keone chimed in, “Shoots, it hurt?”
“I mean if he hits like, my bladder or my ribs sure. But it doesn't hurt every time he moves,”
Makoa showed them if he poked his belly gently enough. The brothers felt a strong wriggle shift inside Makoa. Even feeling his stomach wriggle under their palms.
“Fuck!” Kawika let out, removing his hand
Keone just jumped back
Makoa got a good chuckle out of it. “Aww, what's the matter?”
“You sure it ain't no alien?” Kawika asked
Makoa chuckled taking another piece of mochi, “Yes I'm sure,”
Makoa had taken a little break, chatting with Keone and Kawika before returning to practice his movements some more. The brothers gave him pointers and helped him get acquainted with his more gravid movements. Keone brought up videos of drums playing the rhythms Kumu Valdez would most likely be hearing as a means to follow the beat. Makoa began to work up a sweat, taking another break and finishing off the mochi. Including the sakura mochi.
Sitting under the banyan tree Makoa felt confident in his ability. “See still got it,”
Keone and Kawika were encouraging, “Pretty good for a pregnant guy,”
“Hey I may be pregnant but I can still beat your asses,” Makoa replied
“Howzdat?” Keone asked sarcastically
Makoa crossed his arms just at his chest and with his chin up high “I'm gonna tell your tutu,”
Keone and Kawika froze, “nah dats not cool,” Kawika said
“Playing dirty you fuccah,” Keone said back
“Damn right,” Makoa said proudly “gotta use everything to my advantage,”
“Then we should use ours,” Keone said as he leaned over Makoa
The rottweiler twins were closing in nearly pressing their bodies against his pregnant belly. Makoa looked up at him, nervously “Oh… Oh yeah… w-w-what's that?”
“We bigger,” Kawika said.
Keone leaned in and whispered something into Makoa's ear. Makoa gasped, and his face turned bright red. Keone smirked at him.
“Okay okay, you win,” Makoa let out
The twins got a good chuckle out of that.
It is as they say time flies when you're having fun. It was about time for Makoa to head over to the hotel. He was accompanied by Keone and Kawika who insisted that they wanted to see him dance. The twins remarked how adorable Makoa looked waddling ahead of them.
A little grumpy groan from Makoa.
“Eh we like you like dis,” Kawika said
They stopped at a light
“Yeah much cuter like dis,” Keone replied
Without warning the twins each grasped his ass. Makoa jumped slightly. Feeling each of the brothers squeeze one cheek in their hand. He moaned slightly. Makoa started breathing heavily these two were being such teases, and getting him all worked up. He’d need to get his revenge on them later.
The three of them eventually, arrived at the hotel in no time at all. The three made their way to their second-floor ballroom area where they were holding their little luau. Makoa was stopped by security until he told them he was with Kumu Valdez. One of the musicians vouched for Makoa, letting him inside.
The ballroom had a rather typical setup. Tables decorated with fake flowers and tiki candles, a buffet of food off to one side, and an area up in front blocked off to be the stage. Makoa weaved through the tourists to get to the stage as they were getting ready to perform.
Makoa waved to Kumu Valdez as he walked in, who was on stage getting ready to begin the performance. Seeing that old boar sit up on that stage brought back so many memories. The rest of the band quickly gave their hellos as he walked by with Keone and Kawika heading for the changing room. They cornered off a section of the venue to use as a dressing room. The three of them were welcomed warmly.
Spotting a few of his old girlfriends, he gave a wave. Like a gaggle of wild geese, they swarmed him.
“Oh, Koa! You're so big!” several feminine felines said to the pregnant otter.
Many of the girls he danced alongside prior to him getting pregnant, crowded around Makoa wanting to ask many questions about his pregnancy, who the father was, if Kawika or Keone were the fathers, a boy or a girl, is Makoa sure he was not carrying twins. Makoa of course kept the answers rather simple. He'd heard most of them so many times.
“fine, a guy, neither of them, a boy, and yes just the one. Guys I really gotta start getting ready it's gonna take me a while just to change,”
Of course, they understood. A few of the older felines were mothers themselves. Makoa headed off to the men's area they had set up. Kawika and Keone stayed close by.
“You know I can change by myself,” Makoa said rather embarrassed
“And miss this?” Keone remarked
“Don't worry we've seen you naked before,” Kawika told Makoa
There was a bit of truth in that. Since Makoa was on the swim and water volleyball team in high school, he'd often wash off in the locker rooms after games or practice. More than once he was caught by Kawika, and that one time Makoa bumped into Keone and copped a feel. Makoa just kind of trailed off in his thought. “But like this i…”
The twins came over, Keone starting to untie Makoa's boardshorts, while Kiwika lifted his shirt.
“Hey!” Makoa let out.
“You were taking too long,” Keone told him. “Just think of us like helpers,” Keone said as he slid down Makoa's shorts.
“But…” Makoa was breathing heavily feeling flustered
Kawika was pulling Makoa's shirt off of him. “Dang look at you,” Kaikwa said softly
Makoa felt Kawika cup his swollen chest. Bouncing them gently in his palms. Makoa winced slightly. They were so tender. A sudden girlish gasp as Keone cupped Makoa’s balls. “Still the same little berries,” Keone said
“You should see up here,” Kawika said licking his lips
“Stop…” Makoa whimpered to them both
Keone stood up. Kawika lifted his hands off Makoa. “I… you both…” Makoa tried to say
“I get it,” Keone said “My brother can be a bit much,”
“Says you,” Kawika responded
The two brothers were shooting jabs at one another about who's the bigger perv. Makoa didn't want to hear it.
“Look. I've always had a crush on you two and you both touching me like this when I'm this pregnant, I just…”
Kawiaka stepped up, “I like you too.”
“Same,” Keone said “I expect to see you kill it out there,”
“Get on that stage and be all sexy for us show us which one you like more,”
Keone slapped his brother in the chest with the back of his hand. They both leaned in and kissed Makoa on the cheek. Makoa turned bright red and had a big smile as the twins left. “We'll be watching you,” Keone said as they left
He dug into his bag and pulled out a pair of black shorts. Squeezing into them was a bit of a struggle. It was quite a fit, “so much for one size fits all,” he groaned pulling them up his now meatier thighs.
Once they were on and everything was comfortably adjusted he got his lavalava out of his bag. His lavalava was orange with hibiscus flowers and stems made in a beautiful flowing pattern. Makoa wrapped it around his waist tying it in a kind of low skirt. Makoa made sure to tuck the ends into the waistband of his shorts to keep them nice and tight. Once they were set he wiggled around a little with nice wide and sudden Movements as he held his pregnant belly. It stayed in place and that's what he wanted.
His kumu left him a headband made from a tied coconut leaf. Alongside shredded leaves that he tied around His calves. The leaves stopped just before his ankles. All that was missing was his fire knife. Kumu Valdez Thought of that and put Makoa's name on the case it was kept in As well as the mixture to light the blade once it was time.
Stepping out his mixture and the matches he could see they were about halfway through their set. There were a couple more numbers before him. A few stagehands complimented him “Oh you look so. good Koa!”
Swaying back and forth Makoa just said he hopes he does well tonight. “You're gonna kill it tonight, we missed you buddy!”
Makoa watched as the girls and guys danced number after number the audience captivated by the movement of the performers unaware of what was being spoken during Kumu Valdez's singing - songs of rebellions, protests, and great battles long ago. But at least they sounded pretty.
“Okay Koa, it's time l,” one stagehand said
Makoa went and stood in a safe space and coated the blade of his knife in the mixture. A combination of alcohol and water. Making sure there wasn't a single drip before lighting the blade. Makoa took a deep breath and waited as they turned down the lights.
Kumu Valdez announced that as they were wrapping up their show, with a display that was unique to their island home. Kumu Valdez and the others at the drums readied themselves.
Dum Dum. Echoed over the crowd
They began to build the rhythm as Makoa stepped out onto the stage standing in the pit of sand they made. His fire knife was already lit. He swung it down like a powerful sword swing. A change in the angle of his wrists brought it back up in an upward swing. The drums set the tone as the lights dimmed.
Makoa held out the fire knife, the bladed end fully engulfed in flames. He held it high as he circled into the small stage of sand. Much like he practiced he grabbed a bit of fire and attempted to light the bottom end of the knife. The first attempt was a dud. Second attempt he lowered to the sand on one knee, but still nothing. A third attempt and fourth time's the charm. Once the bottom end was lit Makoa quickly covered the tips of his paws in sand to extinguish the fire. The fire knife now fully alight, the rhythm built up as he slowly got to his feet. Makoa assumed his stance legs apart and the rhythm began to quicken as his Kumu added a fierce rhythm on the accompanying toere.
Makoa tossed the knife in the air giving it a little horizontal spin as it rose higher. His heart bounded to the beat of the music, his eyes focused on the handle, the moment of truth. Makoa outstretched his hand and the knife handle landed perfectly in his hand.
"CHEEHOO!!" Erupted from behind the stage
Makoa spun the knife around in a full circle before reversing it in the other direction. Showing his control before going right into a fast-paced vili. The flames spun around and around as he built up speed. Makoa stayed in control, spinning the handle around one hand while keeping it steady with the other.
His heart pounded. A simple toss to his other hand sent it back in such a fast motion. Like Makoa was pushing the handle around and around as it floated in the air. The crowd watching him was in amazement, cameras recording him. He kept the motion as she shifted into a vili tasi with one hand like he was spinning the handle around his thumb while he held back the other.
He kept a few rotations and brought his second hand back to regain control. Makoa's feet shifted as he started to spin the flaming knife around his back, swooping it around to the front. He could feel the flames getting close to his baby belly. The knife spun and spun as he shifted his footing along the sand. It could almost look like a dance. Makoa was encircling the spinning knife looking like it stayed spinning in one place.
Cheers erupted from the crowd, it was guys but he wanted to try it. He'd been practicing that afternoon sapo lalo vae. He released the handle and quickly kicked his leg catching the knife at the apex of his kick and going into an upper-head spin landing his foot perfectly on the ground and maintaining his balance. Cheers roared from behind the stage as Makoa held it horizontally over his head, getting down on one knee and slamming it into the sand. The rhythm ended. And the crowd roared with cheers, clapping and whistling for this last performance. Keone and Kawika raced out onto the stage as Makoa put out the fire knife in the sand on the stage. The twin brothers help him to his feet.
"Told you, you could do it," the brothers told him
Makoa was happy to have not hurt himself.
Kumu Valdez came forward, thanked everyone and handed it off to the hosts of the luau. While they collected their instruments. Makoa felt amazing after that. Keone and Kawika came up to Makoa, the two giving him a big hug. Keone asked for their help backstage to help him out of everything, a request they both eagerly obliged.
Most of the other dancers had already changed out of their outfits, and the twins just liked the excuse to get Makoa naked. Feeling their hands caress his body, Makoa let out soft little whimpers. Keone whispered in one ear the kinds of things he wanted to do to Makoa. “Once we're all alone,”
Makoa felt shivers down his back.
Kawika nibbled on Makoa's ear before whispering such vulgar acts in his ear. His heart raced, “You're both so mean,” Makoa told them both.
“How, We just gonna give you a good time,” Kawika said
Makoa responded “You're gonna make me choose between the two of you,”
“No gotta pick if you get both,” Keone said to Makoa
Makoa took a moment to process what Keone had just said. Picturing The two brothers in such an intimate display with himself. Makoa chirped in excitement as he felt himself get riled up. “B-b-b-both…”
The brothers looked at Makoa with big grins on their faces. Makoa finished getting dressed, just as the stagehands came by to clean everything up. The three walking out hand in hand Makoa had his mind in the gutter. They riled him up and needed to alleviate him. Makoa stopped them about to say something when they all heard: “Koa!?”
A couple of dancers rushed up to him “Come on Koa! We're all going to eat!”
They invited him out with them. “Do you guys wanna…?” Makoa asked
“Sure I'm sure you're hungry,” Kawika said
“I bet that baby is pretty hungry,” Keone replied
Makoa smiled nervously, agreeing with them, thinking to himself with a defeated sigh “Not what I meant but okay,”
They all went to a spot just on the outskirts of the touristy part of the city. A little place near the beach. They took up several tables, ordering drinks and food while talking jovially. Makoa enjoyed a little something fried oysters that he ate up rather quickly, even while using his baby bump as a table.
“That shit’s so cute!” one of the girls pointed out
“It's an otter thing,” Makoa said happily back to her
“No it's a pregnancy thing,” another said
Before they knew it a couple of the women had steered the conversation into what is and isn't a ‘pregnancy thing’ to talking about baby bumps. Makoa looked over to see Kawika and Keone engaged in two different conversations. Makoa felt a little flutter. Taking that as his hint Makoa stepped away from everyone heading out onto the beach.
He wandered out to the shore break with barely the light of the restaurant lighting up a nearby area. He felt the water crashing up against him telling him he was there. Makoa closed his eyes, feeling the water rush over them as they slowly sank into the sand. While Makoa was gazing out into the darkened ocean feeling the wind through his fur. Makoa cradled his pregnant belly in his hands. A tranquil calm washed over him. Today has been a day of such excitement, treats, and the beginning of something new. In Makoa's heart, he made a wish - “I hope you love the life you were born into my sweet baby boy.”
-----------------------------------------
Makoa was just your typical otter.
Okay I have dragged my feet on this for long enough, so here it is for everyone to enjoy.
This story means a lot to me as it has a lot of my own personal experiences within it, growing up in a Hawaiian community. Writing this I was brought back to the days of performing with my Halau, I remember the rush of being on stage, and how we would celebrate after. Much of the location I wrote about I based off of areas here on Oahu - my home. Even if I am not 100% descriptive - I am thinking of the place that is my home. And with this piece I share a little bit more of myself with you.
I ask only if you enjoy this piece let me know. If you don't well - a simple "No Thanks" will suffice please.
I hope you all enjoy!
