For those of you that aren't familiar with this type of art, this is a high end example of Meerschaum tobacco pipe carving. The finest of these pipes came from Germany and Austria mainly with many fine examples also coming from France. But production stopped in the early 1900s when Turkey, the main source of meerschaum, banned the export of the raw, un-carved mineral.
Dogs, horses, foxes were a very common subject but I have seen very few wolves and this is the only "Pack Of Wolves" I have eves seen, and I've been collecting a long time... but a wolf suckling a cub is a once in a lifetime find. The piece is flawless, including the real amber stem, (these things are super fragile!!). I just received it today and was blown away. It is 5.5" long. Probably made between 1890 and 1910.
if anyone is interested in seeing more, just ask.

Long time back I paid nearly 200$ for a hand carved Meerschaum pipe... the bowl was the dragon's head and the tail was the stem and the whole thing was 18 inches long. Had it for several months and smoked it regularly at our D&D get togethers. One day a friend popped in for a chat and such and he sat down on my bed as I got stuff together... I heard a *snap*.... Wasn't his fault... I had enjoyed a bowl and had left it there and the covers had flopped over it so he never saw it. He was more sick about it than I was. I wonder what it would be worth today... even as a smoked pipe (not pristine)? Such is life.
