I just got this picture last night as a surprise birthday gift (Thanks RD and silverfox <3) - so I don't know what the two of them cooked up. I can only guess as to how it played out, but -
IRL I'm a furrrrrrry molecular biologist finishing up uni/college that does research (which involves identifying the species of various things using their DNA but that's not really relevant) with a striped otter character that really, REALLY loves socks.
What's really the kicker is, unbeknownst to RelaxingDragon or anyone here (though I may have hinted at it), my irl project really is about to be cancelled ;_;
Maybe RD really did know, somehow. Maybe I'll go on to another lab and start a project to create socklife in my quest to show the public that socks are more than things to be used and thrown away, and I'm doomed to another project cancellation. Maybe I'll wander the streets, doing what I can to stay alive with the last few socks that I hold dear.
And maybe, maybe I'll just have to write a backstory to this.

D'aaaw. That's a cool friend you have then! I hope things get better after the whole project issue. It is a great picture!
This is such a lovely image, thank you for sharing n.n <3
Maybe they got lost and ended up in there? Or, they're there to STOP them being lost. Or maybe they're parts that got detached from the original being. o:
After my project was cancelled, we had to scale back on nutrients, causing the sock-critter to slowly unravel.
In the picture I'm there at the end, despite many sleepless nights of writing grant proposals and begging for funding, no one sees fit to give me the means to keep sock-critter alive.
I decide to at least be there as my creation slowly loses consciousness transitioning back into individual socks, like a father watching his only child slowly fade away with only empty words as comfort...
or maybe it's artistic license so you can really tell what the growing critter is made of
Scientists always ruin the magic, right? :V

Freakin' scientists... gotta hit that bottom line hard, don't ya? >:C
Those heartless BASTARDS! I bet they paid you in buttons.

To me it's the relationship of child and toy.
The ammount of frustration and care that goes into a beloved item -in this case a sock plush-
The unwillingness to let go no matter the cost or damage to said piece.

Haha, this is just so ridiculous, and adorable, and ridiculously adorable~
It's not often I see images here the evoke genuine emotion, and I always love it when I do. You've done good work here.
Amazing work, you can really sense the emotion in this image. I love it
When I was first looking at this, I got a little teary-eyed... and then I noticed the foremost peice of paper.
oh god. ;-; why.
oh god. ;-; why.
At first, this didn't makes sense...then I saw "Project Cancelled" and was like "Oooooooooh :O"
Poor plush :<

The content is what really drew me to this piece. I had to take a closer look after I noticed what was floating in the tank. I'm really curious as to what this picture is about. :) For having such cute characters, there's a lot of emotion in this piece. Maybe BECAUSE the characters are so child-like. Great job!
Heya! I'm only the subject of the picture so I can't be entirely sure myself quite yet, but look for a tl;dr comment 5 posts from the top as to my guess :q
Is there a story behind this? If so, I want to read it.
Not shown: his revenge-fueled rampage against the people who cancelled the project.
We can rebuild him. Make him harder, better, faster, stronger.
awww poor sock otter *writes a big corporate cheque* hope that helps
In a RP where my companion is a plushie.. this really touched my heart.. wellll done!!!
As much as this picture moves me I am very strongly reminded of this. --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLdn8QfxxCo
I'm not sure if I should be sad/touched, or scared shitless at the potential ramifications of creating a new life form out of what appears to be missing dryer socks... I could see this creature spelling our doom!
This reminds me so much of the opening chapter of a book I've been working on for the past decade... I really should try and finish that some year <_<
