On Thursday May 24th 2012, a gorilla that I had the honor of knowing passed away. Mumbah was one of the last wild caught gorillas of the 20th century. At the age 47 he had been the adoptive father to 16 different gorillas. He had a gentle quality and could always be identified by how he liked to let his lower lip flop down. I met him in 2005 when I was working on my master's thesis. I went to his building day after day to record data. It was one Saturday, the 5th of November that the zoo was nearly empty and we just sat next to each other doing absolutely nothing for four hours. I was always attached to him since then. This pic was taken with my crappy camera phone on 7-12-06 a week before I was hired on at the zoo. This grainy little still has always been special to me as it was the first I ever took of him. I shared a lot with him, including my hopes to work in conservation. I cried like a baby when I heard of his death and I have no real way to honor his memory beyond this small cyber shrine. So I wish him well and thank anyone for stopping by to wish him well on his journey. I think I'd like to get this done as a nice glossy and hang it in my room. Thank you everyone and thank you MUMBAH.
